With a current estimate of ~1,000 million tons, mesopelagic fishes likely dominate the world total fishes biomass. However, recent acoustic observations show that mesopelagic fishes biomass could be ...significantly larger than the current estimate. Here we combine modelling and a sensitivity analysis of the acoustic observations from the Malaspina 2010 Circumnavigation Expedition to show that the previous estimate needs to be revised to at least one order of magnitude higher. We show that there is a close relationship between the open ocean fishes biomass and primary production, and that the energy transfer efficiency from phytoplankton to mesopelagic fishes in the open ocean is higher than what is typically assumed. Our results indicate that the role of mesopelagic fishes in oceanic ecosystems and global ocean biogeochemical cycles needs to be revised as they may be respiring ~10% of the primary production in deep waters.
Helicobacter pylori infection is the major risk factor for gastric adenocarcinoma. The link with gastric adenocarcinoma is partly due to the H. pylori CagA oncoprotein. CagA is responsible for a ...particular cell phenotype in vitro, the 'hummingbird' phenotype, that corresponds to an elongation of the cells, mimicking an epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). EMT participates in the carcinogenesis process, and is involved in the generation of cancer stem cells (CSCs). However, its involvement in gastric carcinogenesis has yet not been studied. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the role of H. pylori in EMT and in the emergence of gastric CSCs. For this purpose, gastric epithelial cells were cocultured with a cagA-positive H. pylori strain or its isogenic-deleted mutants or were transfected with CagA expression vectors. Study of the expression of epithelial and mesenchymal markers showed that H. pylori, via CagA, is responsible for an EMT phenotype associated with an increase in mesenchymal markers as well as CD44 expression, a known gastric CSC marker. Moreover, infection led to an increased ability to migrate, to invade and to form tumorspheres. Cell sorting experiments showed that only the CD44(high) cells induced by H. pylori infection displayed the mesenchymal phenotype and CSC properties in vitro, and had higher tumorigenic properties than CD44(low) cells in xenografted mice. Immunohistochemistry analyses on human and mouse gastric mucosa tissue samples confirmed a high expression of CD44 and mesenchymal markers in H. pylori-infected cases, and in gastric dysplasia and carcinoma. All of these data suggest that H. pylori, via CagA, unveils CSC-like properties by induction of EMT-like changes in gastric epithelial cells.
Context.
Super-Earths present compositions dominated by refractory materials. However, there is a degeneracy in their interior structure between a planet that has no atmosphere and a small Fe ...content, and a planet that has a thin atmosphere and a higher core mass fraction. To break this degeneracy, atmospheric characterisation observations are required.
Aims.
We present a self-consistent interior–atmosphere model to constrain the volatile mass fraction, surface pressure, and temperature of rocky planets with water and CO
2
atmospheres. The parameters obtained in our analysis can be used to predict observations in emission spectroscopy and photometry with JWST, which can determine the presence of an atmosphere and, if present, its composition.
Methods.
We coupled a 1D interior model with a supercritical water layer to an atmospheric model. In order to obtain the bolometric emission and Bond albedo for an atmosphere in radiative-convective equilibrium, we used a low-resolution
k
-correlated atmospheric model. We generated emission spectra with the same atmospheric model at a higher resolution (
R
= 200–300). An adaptive Markov chain Monte Carlo was employed for an efficient sampling of the parameter space at low volatile mass fractions.
Results.
From our interior structure retrieval, we conclude that TRAPPIST-1 c most likely has a bare surface, although the presence of an atmosphere cannot be ruled out. We estimate a 1
σ
confidence interval of the surface pressure for a water-dominated atmosphere of
P
surf
= 40 ± 40 bar. We generated spectra for these two scenarios to compare with the emission flux of TRAPPIST-1 c recently observed in the MIRI F1500W filter. This is compatible with bare rock surfaces or a thin atmosphere with little or no CO
2
. In the case of 55 Cancri e, a combined spectrum with NIRCam and MIRI LRS may present high uncertainties at wavelengths between 3 and 3.7 µm. However, this does not affect the identification of H
2
O because it does not present spectral features in this wavelength range.
Context.
LHS 1140 is an M dwarf known to host two transiting planets at orbital periods of 3.77 and 24.7 days. They were detected with HARPS and
Spitzer
. The external planet (LHS 1140 b) is a rocky ...super-Earth that is located in the middle of the habitable zone of this low-mass star. All these properties place this system at the forefront of the habitable exoplanet exploration, and it therefore constitutes a relevant case for further astrobiological studies, including atmospheric observations.
Aims.
We further characterize this system by improving the physical and orbital properties of the known planets, search for additional planetary-mass components in the system, and explore the possibility of co-orbitals.
Methods.
We collected 113 new high-precision radial velocity observations with ESPRESSO over a 1.5-yr time span with an average photon-noise precision of 1.07 m s
−1
. We performed an extensive analysis of the HARPS and ESPRESSO datasets and also analyzed them together with the new TESS photometry. We analyzed the Bayesian evidence of several models with different numbers of planets and orbital configurations.
Results.
We significantly improve our knowledge of the properties of the known planets LHS 1140 b (
P
b
~ 24.7 days) and LHS 1140 c (
P
c
~ 3.77 days). We determine new masses with a precision of 6% for LHS 1140 b (6.48 ± 0.46
M
⊕
) and 9% for LHS 1140 c (
m
c
= 1.78 ± 0.17
M
⊕
). This reduces the uncertainties relative to previously published values by half. Although both planets have Earth-like bulk compositions, the internal structure analysis suggests that LHS 1140 b might be iron-enriched and LHS 1140 c might be a true Earth twin. In both cases, the water content is compatible to a maximum fraction of 10–12% in mass, which is equivalent to a deep ocean layer of 779 ± 650 km for the habitable-zone planet LHS 1140 b. Our results also provide evidence for a new planet candidate in the system (
m
d
= 4.8 ± 1.1
M
⊕
) on a 78.9-day orbital period, which is detected through three independent methods. The analysis also allows us to discard other planets above 0.5
M
⊕
for periods shorter than 10 days and above 2
M
⊕
for periods up to one year. Finally, our co-orbital analysis discards co-orbital planets in the tadpole and horseshoe configurations of LHS 1140 b down to 1
M
⊕
with a 95% confidence level (twice better than with the previous HARPS dataset). Indications for a possible co-orbital signal in LHS 1140 c are detected in both radial velocity (alternatively explained by a high eccentricity) and photometric data (alternatively explained by systematics), however.
Conclusions.
The new precise measurements of the planet properties of the two transiting planets in LHS 1140 as well as the detection of the planet candidate LHS 1140 d make this system a key target for atmospheric studies of rocky worlds at different stellar irradiations.
The biological pump transports organic carbon produced by photosynthesis to the meso- and bathypelagic zones, the latter removing carbon from exchanging with the atmosphere over centennial time ...scales. Organisms living in both zones are supported by a passive flux of particles, and carbon transported to the deep-sea through vertical zooplankton migrations. Here we report globally-coherent positive relationships between zooplankton biomass in the epi-, meso-, and bathypelagic layers and average net primary production (NPP). We do so based on a global assessment of available deep-sea zooplankton biomass data and large-scale estimates of average NPP. The relationships obtained imply that increased NPP leads to enhanced transference of organic carbon to the deep ocean. Estimated remineralization from respiration rates by deep-sea zooplankton requires a minimum supply of 0.44 Pg C y
transported into the bathypelagic ocean, comparable to the passive carbon sequestration. We suggest that the global coupling between NPP and bathypelagic zooplankton biomass must be also supported by an active transport mechanism associated to vertical zooplankton migration.
Epidemiologic evidence promote the inclusion of flavones in diet due to their inhibitory effects on certain types of cancers, particularly in women. Among the naturally occurring plant flavonoids, ...Apigenin 7-O-glucoside (AGL) is endowed with anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-cancer activities. However, its mechanism of action on cervical cancer, the fourth largest cancer in women, has not yet been clarified. In the current study, we have determined the effect of AGL on human cervical cancer cells and studied its molecular mechanism against cervical cancer. The results showed that AGL inhibited the proliferation of HeLa cells (IC50 was 47.26 μM at 48 h) by inducing apoptosis. Furthermore, AGL treatment caused G0/G1 phase arrest, reduced mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and upgraded intracellular ROS production. AGL could promote the release of cytochrome c by regulating Bcl-2 family proteins, and then activated caspase 9/3 to promote cell apoptosis. Moreover, AGL treatment promoted the expression of p16 INK4A, while inhibited the expression of Cyclin A/D/E and CDK2/6. At the same time in HeLa cells treated with AGL, the PTEN/PI3K/AKT pathway was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner, and cell migration was also impeded correspondingly through the matrix metalloproteinase 2 and 9. Our study may provide a new research direction for harnessing the novel natural compounds in cervical cancer treatment.

The present article describes a structurally novel natural product of the paulomycin family, designated as paulomycin G (
), obtained from the marine strain
M-412, isolated from Cantabrian Sea ...sediments collected at 2000 m depth during an oceanographic expedition to the submarine Avilés Canyon. Paulomycin G is structurally unique since-to our knowledge-it is the first member of the paulomycin family of antibiotics lacking the paulomycose moiety. It is also the smallest bioactive paulomycin reported. Its structure was determined using HRMS and 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. This novel natural product displays strong cytotoxic activities against different human tumour cell lines, such as pancreatic adenocarcinoma (MiaPaca_2), breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2). The compound did not show any significant bioactivity when tested against a panel of bacterial and fungal pathogens.
Red onion skin waste (ROSW) was analyzed for extraction of naturally occurring 4′-O-glucoside of quercetin, spiraeoside (SPI) with promising biological activities. Reversed-phase high-performance ...liquid chromatography was used to determine the SPI content in three different solvent extracts of ROSW: water (12.2 mg/g), methanol (27.6 mg/g), and ethanol (32.5 mg/g). The ethanol extract and SPI showed significant radical-scavenging and anti-inflammatory activities. In addition, the anti-cancer effects of SPI on a HeLa cells was investigated. The results indicated that SPI treatment significantly inhibited cell growth, and the dose of 50 μg/mL exhibited the highest anti-cancer activity. SPI inhibited the expression of B-cell lymphoma 2 and BH3-interacting domain-death agonist and promoted apoptosis by activating caspase-9/-3 expression. Notably, SPI inhibited the expression of mu-2-related death-inducing gene, a molecule involved in death receptor-mediated apoptotic signaling. Cyclin-dependent kinase 2-cyclin-E expression was also inhibited after SPI treatment, particularly at the G2/M checkpoint. Our findings provide novel insights into the apoptotic potential with promising anticancer and enzyme inhibitory effects of ROSW SPI.

ABSTRACT
A major goal in the discovery and characterization of exoplanets is to identify terrestrial-type worlds that are similar to (or otherwise distinct from) our Earth. Recent results underscore ...the importance of applying devolatilization – i.e. depletion of volatiles – to the chemical composition of planet-hosting stars to constrain bulk composition and interiors of terrestrial-type exoplanets. In this work, we apply such an approach to a selected sample of 13 planet-hosting Sun-like stars, for which high-precision photospheric abundances have been determined in the first paper of the series. With the resultant devolatilized stellar composition (i.e. the model planetary bulk composition), as well as other constraints including mass and radius, we model the detailed mineralogy and interior structure of hypothetical, habitable-zone terrestrial planets (‘exo-Earths’) around these stars. Model output shows that most of these exo-Earths are expected to have broadly Earth-like composition and interior structure, consistent with conclusions derived independently from analysis of polluted white dwarfs. Exceptions are the Kepler-10 and Kepler-37 exo-Earths, which we predict are strongly oxidized and thus would develop metallic cores much smaller than Earth. Investigating our devolatilization model at its extremes as well as varying planetary mass and radius (within the terrestrial regime) reveals potential diversities in the interiors of terrestrial planets. By considering (i) high-precision stellar abundances, (ii) devolatilization, and (iii) planetary mass and radius holistically, this work represents essential steps to explore the detailed mineralogy and interior structure of terrestrial-type exoplanets, which in turn are fundamental for a quantitative understanding of planetary dynamics and long-term evolution.
Bacteriocins are peptides of ribosomal synthesis that are active against bacteria related to the producing strain. They have been widely used in the food industry as biopreservatives. The generation ...of hybrid peptides by combining the genes that encode two different bacteriocins has made it possible to study the mechanisms of action of the bacteriocins that compose them and also develop new peptides with improved biotechnological applications. Hybrid bacteriocins may be obtained in several ways. In our laboratory, by combining enterocin CRL35 and microcin V (Ent35-MccV), we obtained a broad-spectrum peptide that is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Ent35-MccV is sensitive to the action of intestinal proteases and is heat resistant, which makes it a good candidate for use as a biopreservative. For this reason, the peptide was tested in skim milk and beef burgers as food models. We also obtained more potent variants of the hybrid by modifying the central amino acid of the hinge region that connects the two bacteriocins. This review also discusses future applications and perspectives regarding the Ent35-MccV and other hybrid peptides.
