The decrease in bone density may occur as a result of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Studies conducted on this issue generally focused on treated IBD patients. It is thus difficult to discriminate ...the role of disease from the effect of therapy on bone density reduction. We evaluated the prevalence of osteopenia/osteoporosis and abnormalities in indices of bone metabolism in patients with newly diagnosed IBD.
Evaluation of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the lumbar spine and intact parathormone (PTH), 25-hydroxy vitamin D and urinary cross-links, on 37 (26 females, median age 35.6±14.5 years) consecutive patients.
Sixteen of 37 patients (43%) had normal DXA, 17 (46%) were osteopenic and 4 (11%) osteoporotics. Most male patients >30 years (63%) old as well as young women (62%) had osteopenia/osteoporosis. Mean value of intact-PTH was significantly higher in women >50 years (55.0±18.1 pg/mL) compared with those aged 16-20 years (30.0±14.6 pg/mL) (P=0.042). Furthermore, there was a significant difference between mean value of 25-hydroxy vitamin D in women >50 years old (16.2±4.7 ng/mL) compared to those aged 21-30 years (26.6±7.9 ng/mL) (P=0.041). Intact-PTH was significantly higher in osteoporotic patients (55.7±12.7 pg/mL) compared to normal subjects (28.3±13.0 pg/mL) (P=0.0014).
High prevalence of osteopenia/osteoporosis was observed in this population. On the basis of these data, we propose to perform DXA in male patients aged >30 years and in all women with new diagnosis of IBD.
Abstract
The development of agriculture through technological processes in the field of agriculture is a dynamic of society that results in certain changes in its socio-economic life. The changes ...that occur in the farming community of hybrid corn seed production include changes in social aspects and economic aspects. In an effort to increase the production and productivity of hybrid corn, quality seeds are needed. To obtain quality seeds, internal and external monitoring is required in accordance with the management of seed quality standards. In seed production, there are two obstacles that are often faced, including social constraints in setting planting distance and time isolation, roguing, and detasseling. Economic constraints are caused by limited capital owned by farmers and the marketing system that is tied to the rights of seed licensors. To anticipate the obstacles that arise in the farming community, the role of the government is needed to take various steps and policies that can support farmers in dealing with their problems. In this case, government support is highly expected in determining the mapping of the seed area so that it can guarantee the purity of the crop in seed production.
Liquid hydrocarbons were long predicted on Titan’s surface before the RADAR instrument onboard Cassini detected lakes poleward of 70°N in July 2006. Before that the Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem ...(ISS) observed a lake-like feature in the South Pole, named Ontario Lacus, in July 2004. Here we analyze one observation of Ontario Lacus taken by the Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) on 2007 December 5, during the T 38 flyby. This is the best spatially resolved image of a Titan lake to date by an imaging spectrometer, and has been previously reported in Brown et al. (Brown, R.H., Soderblom, L.A., Soderblom, J.M., Clark, R.N., Jaumann, R., Barnes, J.W., Sotin, C., Buratti, B., Baines, K.H., Nicholson, P.D. 2008. Nature 454, 607–610) and in Barnes et al. (Barnes, J.W. et al. 2009. Icarus 201, 217–225). The observing geometry and our data processing will be explained, followed by a discussion of the main characteristics of the image. The analyzed image covers a small portion of Ontario Lacus and shows what appears from RADAR data to be a region of modest slope (“ramp”) adjacent to the dark lake itself. Our analysis of 5.0
μm spectral data suggests that the previously reported absorption feature of ethane seen at shorter wavelengths may be produced by damp sediments adjacent to the main liquid basin. The latter appears to be absorbing all of the photons incident upon it in the 5
μm spectral region and shows no discernible absorption features. A characterization of the basin composition and morphology is developed with the help of ISS and RADAR observations. The simplest model consistent with the data is an optically deep lake surrounded by a region in which ethane, propane, possibly methane, and other, less volatile hydrocarbons and nitriles are present mixed into spectroscopically neutral sediments. The dominance of relatively low vapor pressure organics outside the lake itself suggests a retreat of Ontario Lacus associated with evaporation on seasonal or longer timescales, consistent with analysis of RADAR and ISS images.
To ensure academic standards are met for athletic training curriculums, it is essential that librarians and faculty understand student research habits and information literacy instruction ...preferences. This article provides results from a survey of undergraduate athletic training students conducted at two universities. Athletic training students prefer information literacy instruction at the beginning of the semester. When seeking research assistance, students ask their classmates first, followed by friends and Google. Most students spend up to 60 minutes researching online before seeking assistance and prefer in-person communication for assistance from the library followed by email.
Searching the athletic training literature can be confusing and overwhelming with many possible databases for locating relevant peer-reviewed scholarship. Finding evidence-based literature from ...respected publications is helpful in clinical decision-making for athletic training practitioners. This column details recommended databases and search tips to help students, staff, clinicians, and faculty in the field of athletic training find the literature they need to help make evidence-based decisions and to stay current with the published literature. Databases discussed include Cochrane, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, PEDro, Sports Medicine, and Education Index (formerly Physical Education Index), and Google Scholar.
Inspection of near-infrared images from Cassini’s Imaging Science Subsystem and Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer have revealed a new feature in Titan’s haze structure: a narrow band of ...increased scattering by haze south of the equator. The band seems to indicate a region of very limited mixing in the lower stratosphere, which causes haze particles to be trapped there. This could explain the sharp separation between the two hemispheres, known as the north–south asymmetry, seen in images. The separation of the two hemispheres can also be seen in the stratosphere above 150
km using infrared spectra measured by Cassini’s Composite Infrared Spectrometer. Titan’s behaviour in the lower tropical stratosphere is remarkably similar to that of the Earth’s tropical stratosphere, which hints at possible common dynamical processes.
