This paper studies the radiation hardness of low gain avalanche detector (LGAD) developed by the Novel Device Laboratory (NDL) in Beijing and the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of Chinese ...Academy of Sciences, in the context of an upgrade project of the ATLAS detector for the high luminosity phase of LHC. NDL LGAD sensors with different layouts, epitaxial resistivity and doping profile were irradiated up to 1.02 × 1015 neq/cm2 by 70 MeV protons at Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center (CYRIC). The timing resolution of NDL LGAD sensors reached 50 ps and the collected charge reached 3 - 4 fC after irradiation.
A measurement of the top quark pair-production cross section in the lepton+jets decay channel is presented. It is based on 4.6 fb−1 of √s=7 TeV pp collision data collected during 2011 by the ATLAS ...experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. A three-class, multidimensional event classifier based on support vector machines is used to differentiate t¯t events from backgrounds. The t¯t production cross section is found to be σt¯t=168.5±0.7(stat) +6.2−5.9(syst) +3.4−3.2(lumi) pb. The result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction based on QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order.
A search for Higgs boson pair production in events with two b-jets and two τ-leptons is presented, using a proton–proton collision dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{−1}$ collected at ...$ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Higgs boson pairs produced non-resonantly or in the decay of a narrow scalar resonance in the mass range from 251 to 1600 GeV are targeted. Events in which at least one τ-lepton decays hadronically are considered, and multivariate discriminants are used to reject the backgrounds. No significant excess of events above the expected background is observed in the non-resonant search. The largest excess in the resonant search is observed at a resonance mass of 1 TeV, with a local (global) significance of 3.1σ (2.0σ). Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits are set on the non-resonant Higgs boson pair-production cross-section at 4.7 (3.9) times the Standard Model prediction, assuming Standard Model kinematics, and on the resonant Higgs boson pair-production cross-section at between 21 and 900 fb (12 and 840 fb), depending on the mass of the narrow scalar resonance.graphic not available: see fulltext
A measurement of the top-quark mass (m$_{t}$) in the $ t\overline{t} $ → lepton + jets channel is presented, with an experimental technique which exploits semileptonic decays of b-hadrons produced in ...the top-quark decay chain. The distribution of the invariant mass m$_{ℓμ}$ of the lepton, ℓ (with ℓ = e, μ), from the W-boson decay and the muon, μ, originating from the b-hadron decay is reconstructed, and a binned-template profile likelihood fit is performed to extract m$_{t}$. The measurement is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb$^{−1}$ of $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV pp collisions provided by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the ATLAS detector. The measured value of the top-quark mass is m$_{t}$ = 174.41 ± 0.39 (stat.) ± 0.66 (syst.) ± 0.25 (recoil) GeV, where the third uncertainty arises from changing the Pythia8 parton shower gluon-recoil scheme, used in top-quark decays, to a recently developed setup.graphic not available: see fulltext
The first observation of the $ {B}_s^0 $→ (χ$_{c1}$(3872) → J/ψπ$^{+}$π$^{−}$)π$^{+}$π$^{−}$ decay is reported using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1, 2 and ...6 fb$^{−1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, respectively. The ratio of branching fractions relative to the $ {B}_s^0 $→ (ψ(2S) → J/ψπ$^{+}$π$^{−}$)π$^{+}$π$^{−}$ decay is measured to be$ \frac{\mathcal{B}\left({B}_s^0\to {\chi}_{c1}(3872){\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}\right)\times \mathcal{B}\left({\chi}_{c1}(3872)\to J/\psi {\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left({B}_s^0\to \psi (2S){\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}\right)\times \mathcal{B}\left(\psi (2S)\to J/\psi {\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}\right)}=\left(6.8\pm 1.1\pm 0.2\right)\times {10}^{-2}, $where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The mass spectrum of the π$^{+}$π$^{−}$ system recoiling against the χ$_{c1}$(3872) meson exhibits a large contribution from $ {B}_s^0 $→ χ$_{c1}$(3872) (f$_{0}$(980) → π$^{+}$π$^{−}$) decays.graphic not available: see fulltext
A search for charged Higgs bosons decaying into W±W± or W±Z bosons is performed, involving experimental signatures with two leptons of the same charge, or three or four leptons with a variety of ...charge combinations, missing transverse momentum and jets. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018 is used. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1. The search is guided by a type-II seesaw model that extends the scalar sector of the Standard Model with a scalar triplet, leading to a phenomenology that includes doubly and singly charged Higgs bosons. Two scenarios are explored, corresponding to the pair production of doubly charged H±± bosons, or the associated production of a doubly charged H±± boson and a singly charged H± boson. No significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed. H±± bosons are excluded at 95% confidence level up to 350 GeV and 230 GeV for the pair and associated production modes, respectively.
A search for charged Higgs bosons decaying into a top quark and a bottom quark is presented. The data analysed correspond to 139 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV, ...recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The production of a heavy charged Higgs boson in association with a top quark and a bottom quark, pp → tbH+ → tbtb, is explored in the H+ mass range from 200 to 2000 GeV using final states with jets and one electron or muon. Events are categorised according to the multiplicity of jets and b-tagged jets, and multivariate analysis techniques are used to discriminate between signal and background events. No significant excess above the background-only hypothesis is observed and exclusion limits are derived for the production cross-section times branching ratio of a charged Higgs boson as a function of its mass; they range from 3.6 pb at 200 GeV to 0.036 pb at 2000 GeV at 95% confidence level. The results are interpreted in the hMSSM and $$ {M}_h^{125} $$ M h 125 scenarios.
A search for pair production of third-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying into a top quark and a τ-lepton is presented. The search is based on a dataset of pp collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 ...TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1. Events are selected if they have one light lepton (electron or muon) and at least one hadronically decaying τ -lepton, or at least two light leptons. In addition, two or more jets, at least one of which must be identified as containing b-hadrons, are required. Six final states, defined by the multiplicity and flavour of lepton candidates, are considered in the analysis. Each of them is split into multiple event categories to simultaneously search for the signal and constrain several leading backgrounds. The signal-rich event categories require at least one hadronically decaying τ-lepton candidate and exploit the presence of energetic final-state objects, which is characteristic of signal events. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed in any of the considered event categories, and 95% CL upper limits are set on the production cross section as a function of the leptoquark mass, for different assumptions about the branching fractions into tτ and bν. Scalar leptoquarks decaying exclusively into tτ are excluded up to masses of 1.43 TeV while, for a branching fraction of 50% into tτ, the lower mass limit is 1.22 TeV.
