Context Augmented reality (AR) devices such as the Microsoft HoloLens have not been well used in the medical field. Objective To test the HoloLens for clinical and nonclinical applications in ...pathology. Design A Microsoft HoloLens was tested for virtual annotation during autopsy, viewing 3D gross and microscopic pathology specimens, navigating whole slide images, telepathology, as well as real-time pathology-radiology correlation. Results Pathology residents performing an autopsy wearing the HoloLens were remotely instructed with real-time diagrams, annotations, and voice instruction. 3D-scanned gross pathology specimens could be viewed as holograms and easily manipulated. Telepathology was supported during gross examination and at the time of intraoperative consultation, allowing users to remotely access a pathologist for guidance and to virtually annotate areas of interest on specimens in real-time. The HoloLens permitted radiographs to be coregistered on gross specimens and thereby enhanced locating important pathologic findings. The HoloLens also allowed easy viewing and navigation of whole slide images, using an AR workstation, including multiple coregistered tissue sections facilitating volumetric pathology evaluation. Conclusions The HoloLens is a novel AR tool with multiple clinical and nonclinical applications in pathology. The device was comfortable to wear, easy to use, provided sufficient computing power, and supported high-resolution imaging. It was useful for autopsy, gross and microscopic examination, and ideally suited for digital pathology. Unique applications include remote supervision and annotation, 3D image viewing and manipulation, telepathology in a mixed-reality environment, and real-time pathology-radiology correlation.
Hybrid materials consisting of semiconductors and cocatalysts have been widely used for photoelectrochemical (PEC) conversion of CO2 gas to value-added chemicals such as formic acid (HCOOH). To date, ...however, the rational design of catalytic architecture enabling the reduction of real CO2 gas to chemical has remained a grand challenge. Here, we report a unique photocathode consisting of CuS-decorated GaN nanowires (NWs) integrated on planar silicon (Si) for the conversion of H2S-containing CO2 mixture gas to HCOOH. It was discovered that H2S impurity in the modeled industrial CO2 gas could lead to the spontaneous transformation of Cu to CuS NPs, which resulted in significantly increased faradaic efficiency of HCOOH generation. The CuS/GaN/Si photocathode exhibited superior faradaic efficiency of HCOOH = 70.2% and partial current density = 7.07 mA/cm2 at −1.0 VRHE under AM1.5G 1 sun illumination. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that impurity mixed in the CO2 gas can enhance, rather than degrade, the performance of the PEC CO2 reduction reaction.

The experimental XPS and theoretical PDOS analyses reveal that water molecules adsorbed on Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) can promote the electron transfer from InGaN to AgNPs, which enables the formation of partial Ag species with a lower oxidation state in AgNPs. Through the
in situ
IR spectrum and the reaction pathway simulation studies, these newly formed Ag species induced by water adsorption were demonstrated to be responsible for the highly selective methanol production due to the effective formation of a C-O bond and the optimal desorption of the formed methanol from the surface indium site of the InGaN photocatalyst. This unique water promotion effect leads to a 55-fold higher catalytic rate and 9-fold higher selectivity for methanol production compared to photocatalytic methane reforming without water addition. This finding offers a new pathway for achieving clean solar fuels by photocatalysis-based methane reforming.

The room temperature thermal conductivities of 15 nm × 4 nm doped zigzag STNR at 2% carbon and silicon doping concentration are computed to be 9.31 ± 0.33 W m

, respectively whereas the thermal conductivity for the pristine STNR of the same dimension is calculated as 1.204 ± 0.21 W m

. We find that the thermal conductivity of both carbon and silicon doped STNR increases with the increasing doping concentration for both carbon and silicon doping. The magnitude of increase in STNR thermal conductivity due to carbon doping has been found to be greater than that of silicon doping. Different doping patterns manifest different degrees of change in doped STNR thermal conductivity. Double doping pattern for both carbon and silicon doping induces the largest extent of enhancement in doped STNR thermal conductivity followed by single doping pattern and edge doping pattern respectively. The temperature and width dependence of doped STNR thermal conductivity has also been studied. For a particular doping concentration, the thermal conductivity of both carbon and silicon doped STNR shows a monotonic decaying trend at elevated temperatures while an opposite pattern is observed for width variation
i.e.
thermal conductivity increases with the increase in ribbon width. Such comprehensive study on doped stanene would encourage further investigation on the proper optimization of thermal transport characteristics of stanene nanostructures and provide deep insight in realizing the potential application of doped STNR in thermoelectric as well as thermal management of stanene based nanoelectronic devices.

-p Si photocathodes with dramatically improved activity and stability for hydrogen evolution reaction in seawater, modified by Pt nanoclusters anchored on GaN nanowires. We find that Pt-Ga sites at the Pt/GaN interface promote the dissociation of water molecules and spilling H* over to neighboring Pt atoms for efficient H
production. Pt/GaN/Si photocathodes achieve a current density of -10 mA/cm
at 0.15 and 0.39 V vs. RHE and high applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 1.7% and 7.9% in seawater (pH = 8.2) and phosphate-buffered seawater (pH = 7.4), respectively. We further demonstrate a record-high photocurrent density of ~169 mA/cm
under concentrated solar light (9 suns). Moreover, Pt/GaN/Si can continuously produce H
even under dark conditions by simply switching the electrical contact. This work provides valuable guidelines to design an efficient, stable, and energy-saving electrode for H
generation by seawater splitting.
In the current age of advanced technologies, there is an escalating demand for reliable wireless systems, catering to the high data rates of mobile multimedia applications. This article presents a ...novel approach to the concept of Self-Concatenated Convolutional Coding (SECCC) with Sphere Packing (SP) modulation via Differential Space-Time Spreading- (DSTS-) based smart antennas. The two transmitters provide transmit diversity which is capable of recuperating the signal from the effects of fading, even with a single receiving antenna. The proposed DSTS-SP SECCC scheme is probed for the Rayleigh fading channel. The SECCC structure is developed using the Recursive Systematic Convolutional (RSC) code with the aid of an interleaver. Interleaving generates randomness in exchange for extrinsic information between the constituent decoders. Iterative decoding is invoked at the receiving side to enhance the output performance by attaining fruitful convergence. The convergence behaviour of the proposed system is investigated using EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) curves. The performance of the proposed system is ascertained with the H.264 standard video codec. The perceived video quality of DSTS-SP SECCC is found to be significantly better than that of the DSTS-SP RSC. To be more precise, the proposed DSTS-SP SECCC system exhibits an Eb/N0 gain of 8 dB at the PSNR degradation point of 1 dB, relative to the equivalent rate DSTS-SP RSC. Similarly, an Eb/N0 gain of 10 dB exists for the DSTS-SP SECCC system at 1 dB degradation point when compared with the SECCC scheme dispensing with the DSTS-SP approach.
Compressive sensing allows the reconstruction of original signals from a much smaller number of samples as compared to the Nyquist sampling rate. The effectiveness of compressive sensing motivated ...the researchers for its deployment in a variety of application areas. The use of an efficient sampling matrix for high-performance recovery algorithms improves the performance of the compressive sensing framework significantly. This paper presents the underlying concepts of compressive sensing as well as previous work done in targeted domains in accordance with the various application areas. To develop prospects within the available functional blocks of compressive sensing frameworks, a diverse range of application areas are investigated. The three fundamental elements of a compressive sensing framework (signal sparsity, subsampling, and reconstruction) are thoroughly reviewed in this work by becoming acquainted with the key research gaps previously identified by the research community. Similarly, the basic mathematical formulation is used to outline some primary performance evaluation metrics for 1D and 2D compressive sensing.
Solar photoelectrochemical reactions have been considered one of the most promising paths for sustainable energy production. To date, however, there has been no demonstration of semiconductor ...photoelectrodes with long-term stable operation in a two-electrode configuration, which is required for any practical application. Herein, we demonstrate the stable operation of a photocathode comprising Si and GaN, the two most produced semiconductors in the world, for 3,000 hrs without any performance degradation in two-electrode configurations. Measurements in both three- and two-electrode configurations suggest that surfaces of the GaN nanowires on Si photocathode transform in situ into Ga-O-N that drastically enhances hydrogen evolution and remains stable for 3,000 hrs. First principles calculations further revealed that the in-situ Ga-O-N species exhibit atomic-scale surface metallization. This study overcomes the conventional dilemma between efficiency and stability imposed by extrinsic cocatalysts, offering a path for practical application of photoelectrochemical devices and systems for clean energy.
The widespread development in wireless technologies and the advancements in multimedia communication have brought about a positive impact on the performance of wireless transceivers. We investigate ...the performance of our three-stage turbo detected system using state-of-the-art high efficiency video coding (HEVC), also known as the H.265 video standard. The system makes use of sphere packing (SP) modulation with the combinational gain technique of layered steered space-time code (LSSTC). The proposed three-stage system is simulated for the correlated Rayleigh fading channel and the bit-error rate (BER) curve obtained after simulation is free of any floor formation. The system employs low complexity source-bit coding (SBC) for protecting the H.265 coded stream. An intermediate recursive unity-rate code (URC) with an infinite impulse response is employed as an inner precoder. More specifically, the URC assists in the prevention of the BER floor by distributing the information across the decoders. There is an observable gain in the BER and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) performances with the increasing value of minimum Hamming distance (dH,min) using the three-stage system. Convergence analysis of the proposed system is investigated through an extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart. Our proposed system demonstrates better performance of about 22 dB than the benchmarker utilizing LSSTC-SP for iterative source-channel detection, but without exploiting the optimized SBC schemes.
