Substance use disorder (SUD) is a global problem with no boundaries, which also afflicts individuals from countries of the Arabian Peninsula. Data from this region is limited. In an effort to develop ...targeted prevention and intervention initiatives in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it was necessary to identify the nature of substance use by describing the characteristics of those using different substances. Consequently, this study in the UAE was conceived to describe the pattern of SUD in a first-ever cohort that was systematically recruited from the country's National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) in Abu Dhabi.
Two hundred and fifty male patients were recruited from the NRC. Information on substance use was collected using a questionnaire that was completed at an interview with patients who consented to participate. The questionnaire was based on information that the study was designed to capture. It was reviewed by members of institutional ethics committees and approved prior to use. Two hundred and fifty male subjects from the Emirates Family Registry (EFR) were used as a comparison group.
In the cohort studied, SUD correlated with smoking and marital status. Poly-substance users formed the majority of the cohort (84.4 %) with various combinations of substances identified across different age groups. Opioid and alcohol were the most common substances used. The use of pharmaceutical opioids, primarily Tramadol (67.2 % of opioid users), was higher among the youngest age group studied (<30 years old), while older opioid users (≥30 years old) commonly used illicit opioids (Heroin). The use of prescribed medication for non-medical use also included Pregabalin (mean of 8.3 capsules ± 0.5 per day), Procyclidin (6.1 tablets + 0.6 per day) and Carisoprodol (4.2 tablets ± 0.4 per day) and was again highest in the age group below 30 years.
This 2015 study highlights the importance of examining the pattern of poly-substance use in a population in order to develop targeted prevention programs to arrest the prevailing trends. It has drawn attention to the rise in use of prescription medication in the UAE, in particular among younger patients (<30 years), and continuing use of illicit opioid amongst males above 30 years. Specific prevention and intervention strategies, targeting differences between these distinct demographic profiles will capture a large subset of sufferers.
The Rapid Acquisition Atmospheric Detector (RAAD), onboard the LIGHT-1 3U CubeSat, detects photons between hard X-rays and soft gamma-rays, in order to identify and characterize Terrestrial Gamma Ray ...Flashes (TGFs). Three detector configurations are tested, making use of Cerium Bromide and Lanthanum BromoChloride scintillating crystals coupled to photomultiplier tubes or Multi-Pixel Photon Counters, in order to identify the optimal combination for TGF detection. High timing resolution, a short trigger window, and the short decay time of its electronics allow RAAD to perform accurate measurements of prompt, transient events. Here we describe the overview of the detection concept, the development of the front-end acquisition electronics, as well as the ground testing and simulation the payload underwent prior to its launch on December 21st, 2021. We further present an analysis of the detector's in-orbit system behavior and some preliminary results.
Background: During the Novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, medical residents were deployed to help with managing patients in a wide range of settings. Unlike other COVID-19-related topics, ...the psychological impact of the pandemic on medical residents has received little attention. Objective: This study aims to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on medical residents' well-being, depression, and stress levels. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. A total of 597 medical residents were identified and with the aim of a sample size of 300 participants; 242 responses were collected during the period between November 2020 to February 2021. Data were collected through an online survey utilizing Patient Health Questionnaire and Perceived Stress Scale. SPSS software was used for data analysis. Results: Most of the residents in our study were females (73.6%) and single (60.7%). Around 66.5% were depressed, 87.2% were under low-moderate stress, and 12.8% were under high stress. Majority (73.5%) of the single residents were depressed (P = 0.016). Being male has been found to lower the risk of developing depression (P = 0.042). The need to relocate for family protection increased the risk of developing depression (P = 0.022).Residents who were living with their friends/roommates were found to be under a high level of stress (P = 0.001). Surgical specialties' residents were found to be the most under high stress (P = 0.044). Conclusion: Female gender, single status, and changing housing were risk factors for depression. Conversely, living with friends/roommates and working in surgical specialties were contributing to high-stress levels.
A BSTRACT Background: Following the World Health Organization statement ‘Health for all’, family medicine is a specialty that provides continuing, comprehensive healthcare to individuals and their ...families. Despite that, it is still not yet utilized to its full potential by the developing Middle-Eastern community. The aim of our study is to assess the perception and utilization of family medicine services among Abu Dhabi Island’s community. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted targeting Abu Dhabi Island’s community. A representative sample with 95% confidence level and 5% margin of error was calculated taking into consideration the latest report by the Abu Dhabi Statistics Center. A total of 395 adult participants were included in the study, who were asked to fill in an electronic-based validated questionnaire. SPSS software was then used for data analysis. Results: Majority of participants were UAE nationals (81%) and married (71.1%), with almost equal male (50.4%) to female ratio (49.6%). Participants had positive experiences in primary healthcare (PHC) overall, regardless of their gender, nationality and marital status. Positive experience percentages dropped with higher age and educational level ( P -value <0.05). A better understanding was noticed among ≥50 years of age with the rightful destination for emergency symptoms ( P -value <0.05). Participants overall agreed on PHC being the preferred allocation for treatment of fever, body aches and sore throat. Conclusion: Primary healthcare centres were chosen as preferred destinations for emergency and non-emergency cases, as the vast majority had positive experiences when attending them.
Introduction
Recent advances in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) have allowed us to offer HSCT to older, advanced disease patients with more co‐morbidities. Cardiovascular ...toxicity post‐transplant is a major concern due to the increased risk of mortality. Few studies have examined the prevalence of CV events including CAD (MI, angina, PCI, CABG, CHF, arrhythmias), HTN, stroke/TIA, and death in the first 100 days post‐transplant.
Patients
We assessed the impact of pretransplant MUGA results in predicting postallogeneic HSCT CV events and overall survival in the first 100 days, and whether or not transient anthracycline‐induced cardiomyopathy or cumulative anthracycline dose affected overall survival. This retrospective, cohort study included 665 patients with a median age of 52 years who underwent HSCT from 2009 to 2015.
Results
The most frequent CV event in the first 100 days post‐HSCT was arrhythmia seen in 2.9% of patients followed up by CHF (12.3%), MI (9%), and angina (8%). Two patients had PCI, and both survived the first 100 days. Cardiovascular risk factors predict for a poor MUGA scan but not survival. Higher dose anthracycline pretransplant predicted for a poor outcome.
Conclusion
A history of CV disease, MI, or CAD was the most important predictive of CV events, P‐value = .00002. 88.6% survived the first 100 days. Patients with an EF < 50% had a significant likelihood of having a CV event compared to patients with an EF > 60% (OR = 5.3, 95% CI 1.6‐18.1, P = .0219). Cumulative anthracycline dose did not have a significant impact on overall survival.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the world. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it accounts for 40% of mortality. CVD is caused by multiple cardiometabolic risk factors ...(CRFs) including obesity, dysglycemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension and central obesity. However, there are limited studies focusing on the CVD risk burden among young Emirati adults. This study investigates the burden of CRFs in a sample of young Emiratis, and estimates the distribution in relation to sociodemographic and behavioral determinants.
Data was used from the baseline data of the UAE Healthy Future Study volunteers. The study participants were aged 18 to 40 years. The study analysis was based on self-reported questionnaires, anthropometric and blood pressure measurements, as well as blood analysis.
A total of 5167 participants were included in the analysis; 62% were males and the mean age of the sample was 25.7 years. The age-adjusted prevalence was 26.5% for obesity, 11.7% for dysglycemia, 62.7% for dyslipidemia, 22.4% for hypertension and 22.5% for central obesity. The CRFs were distributed differently when compared within social and behavioral groups. For example, obesity, dyslipidemia and central obesity in men were found higher among smokers than non-smokers (p < 0.05). And among women with lower education, all CRFs were reported significantly higher than those with higher education, except for hypertension. Most CRFs were significantly higher among men and women with positive family history of common non-communicable diseases.
CRFs are highly prevalent in the young Emirati adults of the UAE Healthy Future Study. The difference in CRF distribution among social and behavioral groups can be taken into account to target group-specific prevention measures.
Introduction This study delves into the complex interplay between diabetes and breast cancer within the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a subject of considerable global health concern. Given the ...increasing incidence of both diseases worldwide, this research investigates explicitly the potential influence of diabetes on the staging of breast cancer. The UAE, mirroring global trends, has experienced a surge in both conditions attributed to a blend of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. The core objective of this investigation is to explore the link between diabetes and the stage at which breast cancer is diagnosed in UAE patients. Material and method To conduct this study, data were extracted from an extensive medical database consisting of anonymized records about breast cancer patients and their comorbid conditions. The research encompassed adult patients of all genders, all of whom had been definitively diagnosed with breast cancer. The data was analyzed using a suite of Python libraries, including Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, Scikit-learn, Matplotlib, and Seaborn. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were employed, focusing on the Chi-Square test and logistic regression analysis to evaluate the relationship between diabetes and the stages of breast cancer, considering other comorbidities as well. Results The analysis included 131 breast cancer patients, predominantly female (98.47%), with an average age of 54.2 years. Among these patients, 22.14% were diabetic. The prevalence of other comorbidities, such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, and hypothyroidism, was also recorded. The Chi-Square test indicated no significant correlation between diabetes and the stages of breast cancer (χ² = 3.07, p = 0.381). Stage II was the most frequently diagnosed, irrespective of the presence or absence of diabetes. Conclusion In conclusion, this study finds no substantial link between diabetes and the stage of breast cancer diagnosis among patients in the UAE after adjusting for age and other comorbid conditions. These results underscore the need for early breast cancer detection approaches that are not exclusively dependent on the diabetic status of the patients. However, limitations such as the retrospective cohort design and the relatively small sample size highlight the necessity for further comprehensive studies. Such research would deepen the understanding of the relationship between diabetes and breast cancer and contribute to the advancement of breast cancer healthcare in the UAE.
