Introduction
National Cancer Control Programmes (NCCPs) provide a country’s policy framework for the development of cancer control, focussing on the reduction of cancer morbidity and mortality and ...improving quality of life of cancer patients.
Objective
Exploring and analysing to which extent some of the key elements of the European Guide for Quality National Cancer Control Programmes (Guide) are implemented in NCCPs in the EU.
Methods
Survey carried out through 30 countries, EU members, Iceland, Montenegro, Norway and Turkey, focussing on stakeholders’ participation, inclusion of all the envisaged chapters from the Guide as well as implementation and dissemination.
Results
The results of the policy survey on European NCCPs carried out within Cancer Control Joint Action (CANCON JA) are presented. The response was 30 out of 35 countries. In total, 28 out of 30 countries, which completed the survey, had an NCCP or another cancer document. Cancer documents were mostly single documents, managed and supervised by the respective Ministries of Health and communicated to the public via websites and press. Nine documents were defined as programmes, eight as plans and six as strategies; in five countries, terminology was mixed. Regarding the content, recommended by the Guide from 2015, comprising ten chapter areas in three parts. Only 10 countries included in their NCCPs all elements suggested in the Guide.
Conclusion
Based on our results, we can see that a more comprehensive approach in the process of NCCPs is needed. Policy should focus on the development of instruments for efficient cancer management, which would encompass the entire trajectory of the cancer care from diagnosis to survivorship and supportive care.

Using continuous-wave Doppler echocardiography, we evaluated the mitral flow velocity pattern in 30 ventricular septal defect patients, 11 of whom had severe pulmonary vascular obstructive disease ...(Group I); 10 of whom had severe pulmonary hypertension without pulmonary vascular obstructive disease (Group II); and 9 of whom had no pulmonary hypertension and hemodynamically unimportant left-to-right shunts (Group III). In addition, 25 healthy subjects (Group IV) were studied for comparative purposes. The peak velocity of early left ventricular filling (E) was significantly lower in Group I than in all the other groups (p < 0.01). The peak velocity of late left ventricular filling (A) was significantly higher (p < 0.01) in Group I than in Group III, or than in normal individuals (Group IV) (p < 0.01). The ratio A/E was the most prominent difference between Group I patients and the other groups, with Group I having a significantly higher ratio (p < 0.01), which was 1 or greater in 9 of 11 patients. In contrast, none of the remaining ventricular septal defect patients or normal subjects had an A/E ratio of 1 or greater. Group II had increased mitral flow velocities, while Group III had normal mitral flow velocity profiles. A positive correlation between the magnitude of the left-to-right shunt and early mitral flow velocity peak (r = 0.86) and late peak (r = 0.81) was found, regardless of the degree of pulmonary hypertension. These results indicate that significant alterations of the mitral flow velocity pattern, which mimic the abnormalities associated with impaired left ventricular diastolic function (A/E ratio of 1 or greater), occur in ventricular septal defect patients who have severe pulmonary vascular obstructive disease. The transmitral velocity profiles in the ventricular septal defect patients without severe pulmonary vascular obstructive disease were similar to those of the normal patients, although the values relative to the degree of left-to-right shunting were higher in the ventricular septal defect patients.
We reviewed the results in eight patients followed from 10 months to 22 years after one-stage surgery for removal of primary and secondary myocardial and pericardial hydatid cysts. The results were ...satisfactory in eight patients who survived the operation. One patient, however, with recurrent myocardial echinococcosis, pulmonary embolization, and sepsis died at reoperation. The series was analyzed with reference to the surgical treatment and world-wide experience of complicated cardiac echinococcosis.
In the series described here, 2400 patients over a 15-year period underwent surgery for correction of acquired valvular heart disease. Of these, 1586 patients had single valve replacement, 714 had ...double valve replacement, and 100 had triple valve replacement. Concomitant surgery for associated congenital and acquired lesions was done in 114 patients. The hospital mortality was 9.16%.
