For the last decade, the humanities are globally pronounced as stranded in a crisis or at least touched by it. In the times of crisis the apologetic discourse is more important and visible than in ...the times of relative peace and prosperity. Comparing to the Anglo-Saxon humanities, the rhetoric of crisis is not very popular among the representatives of Lithuanian humanities. The article reconstructs the main arguments and defensive regimes used by scholars during experimental discussions on the value of the humanities in Lithuania. The empirical data consists of four discussions (conducted in 2017–2018). The aim of the article is to analyse this argumentation and to compare it to the global discourse on the value of the humanities.
This article deals with urban soundscapes. A soundscape is a sonic environment and a multitude of sound sources that reach the human ear. By comparing different ways in which Klaipėda’s soundscape is ...constructed, we seek to analyze the aural background of Klaipėda. The research is based on the methodological distinction between hearing and listening. The first is a passive reception of sound, while the latter is interpreted as an activity consisting of both the search for sounds as well as their interpretation and analysis. The first article (Gedutis 2016) analyzed the Klaipėda soundscape as it can be heard. The current article concentrates on active attempts to listen to the city (or audition it), i.e., on the perception of the Klaipėda soundscape and the ways it is recorded, constructed and communicated by sound artists and theorists.
Straipsnyje nagrinėjamas Klaipėdos garsovaizdis. Garsovaizdis suvokiamas kaip garsinė aplinka bei daugybiniai garso šaltiniai, kurie pasiekia žmogaus ausį. Gretinant skirtingus Klaipėdos garsovaizdžio kūrimo būdus, siekiama rekonstruoti ir ištirti nūdienos Klaipėdos garsinį foną. Tyrimas grindžiamasmetodologine skirtimi tarp girdėjimo ir klausymo, kai pirmasis suvokiamas kaip pasyvus garso priėmimas, o antrasis – aktyvus veiksmas, apimantis tiek garsų paieškas, tiek jų interpretacijas bei analizę. Pirmame straipsnyje (Gedutis 2016) nagrinėtas miesto garsovaizdis tiek, kiek jis gali būti išgirstas. Šiame straipsnyje nagrinėjamos aktyvios pastangos išklausyti miestą. Jos apima garso teoretikų ir garso menininkų pastangas suvokti Klaipėdos miesto garsovaizdį, jo fiksavimo, konstravimo bei komunikavimo būdus.
The present article seeks to discern the criteria or the quality of research, formulated and accepted within the scholarly community of the humanities. We argue that the scholars implicitly use these ...criteria opposing administrative evaluation. The analysis of these criteria revealed that they might be summarized in three broad categories – the novelty (originality, innovativeness) of the research; the excellence of the researcher (ability to conduct and describe the research); and the impact (academic as well as social-political). We argue that relevant criteria for the administrative evaluation of research in the humanities should draw on these perspectives.
The article aims to examine the phenomenon of artistic research in the broader context of sciences and arts. For that purpose, Pierre Bourdieu’s methodological principle ‘exoticize the domestic’ is ...used. This principle enables to change and alter the epistemic perspective suggesting that ordinary and everyday things should be investigated as if they were alien and strange. In place of theoretical arguments for and against artistic research, an avian metaphor is invoked, which enables to exoticize the domestic sufficiently. By continuing and expanding the existing avian metaphors, the article aims to highlight those aspects of artistic research that are not easy to grasp and distinguish with the help of the usual arguments pro and con artistic research. The main question to be answered: how does the perception of artistic research change when looking at it as a phenomenon of the ornithological world?

Tyrimas grindžiamas metodologine skirtimi tarp girdėjimo ir klausymo, kai pirmasis suvokiamas kaip pasyvus garso priėmimas, o antrasis – aktyvus veiksmas, apimantis tiek garsų paieškas, tiek jų interpretacijas bei analizę. Šiame straipsnyje dėmesys sutelktas į girdėjimo modusą, kurį geriausiai išreiškia ir perteikia oficialus miesto pristatymas Klaipėdos miesto savivaldybės bei Klaipėdos turizmo ir kultūros informacijos centro tinklalapiuose, Klaipėdos triukšmo reguliavimo taisyklės ir triukšmo žemėlapiai, nekilnojamojo turto vystytojų reklaminiai tekstai. Antrame straipsnyje bus nagrinėjama klausymo kategorija, apimanti garso teoretikų ir garso menininkų pastangas suvokti miesto garsovaizdžio fiksavimo ir konstravimo principus.
In the broader context of other types of research, the authors of this article seek to analyse the epistemological status of artistic research. Because of its transdisciplinary character, artistic ...research is interpreted ambiguously: on the one hand, it might be treated as an unjustified and illicit intervention into the scientific field, on the other hand, despite its peculiarities artistic research still might be capable of creating knowledge commensurable with the knowledge produced in other (scientific) disciplines. The major question the article seeks to answer is the following: is it possible to justify artistic research applying ready-made arguments in the philosophy of science?
This essay, while focusing on contemporary Lithuania, raises issues that are of perennial import to the academic study of the humanities in modern nation states, particularly the 'national' ...disciplines of history, language, and literature. There is a constant tension between the scholar's desire for the freedom of academic inquiry, and the desire of state, which often pays the scholar's wages, that the scholar produce research that is 'useful', especially findings that can be used to legitimize a particular political course of action. In this way, the Law on the creation of the Historical Institute of Latvia in 1936 stated that the purpose of this new research institution was to study and explain historical phenomena in the 'spirit of nationalism and truth' ('nacionālisma un patiesības garā') - in that order of precedence. This directive reflected the politics of the authoritarian regime of Kārlis Ulmanis at the time. Similarly today, is not uncommon for the various state funding bodies and central research councils to earmark significant resources for research programs conforming to the political agendas of the parties currently in control of the relevant ministries. This problem is by no means exclusive to Lithuania, or even the Baltic states. But, as the authors here ask, using Lithuania as an illustrative example, what is the cost of subordinating the freedom of scholarly inquiry in the humanities to a narrow, politicized view of what the product of research should be?
Article deals with the analysis of various maps of science. Map is defined as visual means, such as atlases, diagrams, tables or trees, which are applied in classification and arrangement of ...different sciences and scientific disciplines. The article aims at the analysis of the visual means practiced in classifications of sciences, critical evaluation of their assumptions, principles of mapmaking, and their informativity. Approaches of philosophy and sociology of science are supported by geographic and cartographic methodologies that enable to investigate maps as more or less accurate representations of scientific field, which increases their convincing potential in power-related games.
Straipsnyje nagrinėjami mokslo žemėlapiai. Žemėlapiais vadinamos vaizdinės priemonės: atlasai, diagramos, lentelės ar medžiai, naudojamos klasifikuojant ir grupuojant skirtingus mokslus bei mokslines disciplinas. Straipsnio tikslas – ištirti mokslų klasifikacijose naudojamas skirtingas vizualines priemones, kritiškai įvertinti jų prielaidas, sudarymo principus bei informatyvumą.
