The first results from a study of the motion of liquid-phase particles in the interblade channel of an isolated nozzle array of a steam turbine are reported. Some features of the formation of ...secondary droplets produced by the interaction of primary moisture with the blade walls are examined. The influence of the moisture content of the main flow on the formation of the steam-droplet layer near the convex blade surface is established.
We report on electron phase space distributions (PSDs) observed near the plasma sheet (PS) boundary layer (PSBL) by the Cluster electron spectrometers when the northern lobe was occupied by ...significant fluxes of polar rain (PR) electrons. These observations reveal the spatial structure of the electron transition layer (TL) between the polar rain electrons and the PSBL electron population accelerated during reconnection. This TL comprises overlapping spatial dispersion signatures in both energy and pitch angle, which are caused by convection of flux tubes across the magnetic separatrix during the electron time‐of‐flight (TOF) from the X‐line combined with acceleration in the reconnection region. Analysis of this structure allows us to estimate the location of the X‐line. By assuming the PSBL population arises through acceleration of the PR electrons, comparison of their PSD indicates that the electrons gain energy proportional to their initial energy.
Alcoholism is associated with significant changes in gut microbiota composition. Metagenomic sequencing allows to assess the altered abundance levels of bacterial taxa and genes in a ...culture-independent way. We collected 99 stool samples from the patients with alcoholic dependence syndrome (n=72) and alcoholic liver cirrhosis (n=27). Each of the samples was surveyed using “shotgun” (whole-genome) sequencing on SOLiD platform. The reads are deposited in the ENA (project ID: PRJEB18041).
This study presents several observations of the Cluster spacecraft on September 24, 2003 around 15:10 UT, which show necessary prerequisites and consequences for the formation of the so-called ...modified-two-stream instability (MTSI). Theoretical studies suggest that the plasma is MTSI unstable if (1) a relative drift of electrons and ions is present, which exceeds the Alfvèn speed, and (2) this relative drift or current is in the cross-field direction. As consequences of the formation of a MTSI one expects to observe (1) a field-aligned electron beam, (2) heating of the plasma, and (3) an enhancement in the B-wave spectrum at frequencies in the range of the lower-hybrid-frequency (LHF). In this study we use prime parameter data of the CIS and PEACE instruments onboard the Cluster spacecraft to verify the drift velocities of ions and electrons, FGM data to calculate the expected LHF and Alfvèn velocity, and the direction of the current. The B-wave spectrum is recorded by the STAFF instrument of Cluster. Finally, a field aligned beam of electrons is observed by 3D measurements of the IES instrument of the RAPID unit. Observations are verified using a theoretical model showing the build-up of a MTSI under the given circumstances.
A new jewel beetle genus, with one species (
Cretofrontolina kzyldzharica
gen. et sp. nov.) from the Upper Cretaceous of Kazakhstan is described based on a body; and three new species of the formal ...genus
Metabuprestium
are described based on isolated elytra:
Metabuprestium sibiricum
sp. nov. and
M. arkagalense
sp. nov. come from the Arkagala locality (Upper Cretaceous of Russia) and
M. ichbogdense
sp. nov. is from the Shar Tologoi locality (Lower Cretaceous of Mongolia).
This paper presents the research results of new types of heat storages (HS) with shape-stable phase-transitional material (PTM), called unpackaged. The researches were aimed at defining ...serviceability and operational efficiency of the new types of the HS. In the unpackaged HS, unlike the traditional ones, a working medium does not demand hermetic encapsulation during phase transfers from solid state into liquid state and backwards.
The description of the physical and chemical properties of the heat-accumulating composite materials based on the paraffin and the production technology of such kind of shape-stable PTM is presented.
As the working medium the heat-accumulating composite material based on the paraffin A-OAM-50 (V-TAM-50) with melting temperature of 53
°C was applied. Four specimens of the HS were used during experimental investigations. Analysis of thermal tests of the specimens was performed; it showed the effectiveness of the new types of the HS in state-of-the-art technology.
