The correlation between LS and SOC was higher among males and higher among Medical and Human sciences students compared to Exact sciences. Medical students' scores were higher than Applied sciences and Human sciences students on the LS questionnaire. Exact science students' scores on the SOC questionnaire were higher than Human sciences students. In the LS areas related to alcohol intake, sleeping quality, and behavior, there were no differences between the areas. However, women scored better in the nutrition domain and alcohol intake. The SOC was also higher in men compared to women. The results obtained demonstrate in an unprecedented way in the literature that the correlation between the LS and SOC of college students varies according to gender and areas of knowledge, reflecting the importance of actions on improving students' quality of life and enabling better academic performance.
Due to the increase in the number of mobile stations in recent years, cooperative relaying systems have emerged as a promising technique for improving the quality of fifth-generation (5G) wireless ...networks with an extension of the coverage area. In this paper, we propose a two-hop orthogonal frequency division multiplexing and code-division multiple-access (OFDM-CDMA) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay system, which combines, both at the source and relay nodes, a tensor space-time-frequency (TSTF) coding with a multiple symbol matrices Kronecker product (MSMKron), called TSTF-MSMKron coding, aiming to increase the diversity gain. It is first established that the signals received at the relay and the destination satisfy generalized Tucker models whose core tensors are the coding tensors. Assuming the coding tensors are known at both nodes, tensor models are exploited to derive two semi-blind receivers, composed of two steps, to jointly estimate symbol matrices and individual channels. Necessary conditions for parameter identifiability with each receiver are established. Extensive Monte Carlo simulation results are provided to show the impact of design parameters on the symbol error rate (SER) performance, using the zero-forcing (ZF) receiver. Next, Monte Carlo simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed TSTF-MSMKron coding and semi-blind receivers, highlighting the benefit of exploiting the new coding to increase the diversity gain.
Implant-retained custom-milled framework enhances the stability of palatal obturator prostheses. Therefore, to evaluate the mechanical response of implant-retained obturator prostheses with bar-clip ...attachment and milled bars, in three different materials under two load incidences were simulated. A maxilla model which Type IIb maxillary defect received five external hexagon implants (4.1 x 10 mm). An implant-supported palatal obturator prosthesis was simulated in three different materials: polyetheretherketone (PEEK), titanium (Ti:90%, Al:6%, V:4%) and Co-Cr (Co:60.6%, Cr:31.5%, Mo:6%) alloys. The model was imported into the analysis software and divided into a mesh composed of nodes and tetrahedral elements. Each material was assumed isotropic, elastic and homogeneous and all contacts were considered ideal. The bone was fixed and the load was applied in two different regions for each material: at the palatal face (cingulum area) of the central incisors (100 N magnitude at 45°); and at the occlusal surface of the first left molar (150 N magnitude normal to the surface). The microstrain and von-Mises stress were selected as criteria for analysis. The posterior load showed a higher strain concentration in the posterior peri-implant tissue, near the load application side for cortical and cancellous bone, regardless the simulated material. The anterior load showed a lower strain concentration with reduced magnitude and more implants involving in the load dissipation. The stress peak was calculated during posterior loading, which 77.7 MPa in the prosthetic screws and 2,686 με microstrain in the cortical bone. For bone tissue and bar, the material stiffness was inversely proportional to the calculated microstrain and stress. However, for the prosthetic screws and implants the PEEK showed higher stress concentration than the other materials. PEEK showed a promising behavior for the bone tissue and for the integrity of the bar and bar-clip attachments. However, the stress concentration in the prosthetic screws may represent an increase in failure risk. The use of Co-Cr alloy can reduce the stress in the prosthetic screw; however, it increases the bone strain; while the Titanium showed an intermediate behavior.
Although Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receivers currently achieve high accuracy when processing their geographic location under line of sight (LOS), multipath interference and noise ...degrades the accuracy considerably. In order to mitigate multipath interference, receivers based on multiple antennas became the focus of research and technological development. In this context, tensor-based approaches based on Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC) models have been proposed in the literature, providing optimum performance. State-of-the-art techniques for antenna array based GNSS receivers compute singular value decomposition (SVD) for each new sample, implying into a high computational complexity, being, therefore, prohibitive for real-time applications. Therefore, in order to reduce the computational complexity of the parameter estimates, subspace tracking algorithms are essential. In this work, we propose a tensor-based subspace tracking framework to reduce the overall computational complexity of the highly accurate tensor-based time-delay estimation process.
During the past decades, approximate Kohn–Sham density functional theory schemes have garnered many successes in computational chemistry and physics, yet the performance in the prediction of spin ...state energetics is often unsatisfactory. By means of a machine learning approach, an enhanced exchange and correlation functional is developed to describe adiabatic energy differences in transition metal complexes. The functional is based on the computationally efficient revision of the regularized, strongly constrained, and appropriately normed functional and improved by an artificial neural network correction trained over a small data set of electronic densities, atomization energies, and/or spin state energetics. The training process, performed using a bioinspired nongradient-based approach adapted for this work from the particle swarm optimization, is analyzed and discussed extensively. The resulting machine learned meta-generalized gradient approximation functional is shown to outperform most known density functionals in the prediction of adiabatic energy differences for a diverse set of transition metal complexes with varying local coordinations and metal choices.
Objective To present our experience with the surgical management of giant pituitary adenomas in a series of 50 cases operated on by an endoscopic endonasal approach. Methods A retrospective data ...analysis of all patients who underwent transsphenoidal endonasal endoscopic surgery at the General Hospital of Fortaleza, Brazil, between January 1998 and November 2011 was performed. Patients who presented with pituitary adenomas larger than 4 cm were included in the study. Analysis of factors related to the choice of the operative approach, hormonal and visual status, extent of resection, tumor control rates, clinical outcome, and complications were evaluated. Results Fifty cases (10.41%) matched our inclusion criteria. Nonfunctioning tumors were present in 42 patients (84%); among functioning adenomas, five patients (10%) had growth hormone−secreting adenomas, and three patients (6%) had prolactinomas. Total removal of the tumor occurred in 19 cases (38%), near-total removal in 9 cases (18%), and partial removal in 22 cases (44%). Postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leaks occurred in four cases (8%). Postoperative diabetes insipidus was present in 10% and new anterior pituitary insufficiency affecting one axis or more than one axis was observed in 22% and 14%, respectively. The presence of Knosp score ≥3 was associated with subtotal resection. Patients harboring hormonally active adenomas were submitted to adjuvant medical therapy for long-term clinical control. Vision improved in 38 patients (76%), with only one case of visual deterioration reported. Conclusion Transsphenoidal endoscopic endonasal surgery may provide effective treatment for patients with giant adenomas when performed by a surgical team that specializes in pituitary surgery. In cases in which total resection by the endoscopic approach may be associated with important complications, we advocate the use of partial resections followed by adjuvant drug therapy or radiotherapy. In cases of progressive enlargement of residual lesions, a second endoscopic debulking of the tumor may be considered for control of the disease.
Optical sensors combined with machine learning algorithms have led to significant advances in seed science. These advances have facilitated the development of robust approaches, providing ...decision-making support in the seed industry related to the marketing of seed lots. In this study, a novel approach for seed quality classification is presented. We developed classifier models using Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy and X-ray imaging techniques to predict seed germination and vigor. A forage grass (Urochloa brizantha) was used as a model species. FT-NIR spectroscopy data and radiographic images were obtained from individual seeds, and the models were created based on the following algorithms: linear discriminant analysis (LDA), partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), random forest (RF), naive Bayes (NB), and support vector machine with radial basis (SVM-r) kernel. In the germination prediction, the models individually reached an accuracy of 82% using FT-NIR data, and 90% using X-ray data. For seed vigor, the models achieved 61% and 68% accuracy using FT-NIR and X-ray data, respectively. Combining the FT-NIR and X-ray data, the performance of the classification model reached an accuracy of 85% to predict germination, and 62% for seed vigor. Overall, the models developed using both NIR spectra and X-ray imaging data in machine learning algorithms are efficient in quickly, non-destructively, and accurately identifying the capacity of seed to germinate. The use of X-ray data and the LDA algorithm showed great potential to be used as a viable alternative to assist in the quality classification of U. brizantha seeds.
Cellulases play a key role in enzymatic routes for degradation of plant cell-wall polysaccharides into simple and economically-relevant sugars. However, their low performance on complex substrates ...and reduced stability under industrial conditions remain the main obstacle for the large-scale production of cellulose-derived products and biofuels. Thus, in this study a novel cellulase with unusual catalytic properties from sugarcane soil metagenome (CelE1) was isolated and characterized. The polypeptide deduced from the celE1 gene encodes a unique glycoside hydrolase domain belonging to GH5 family. The recombinant enzyme was active on both carboxymethyl cellulose and β-glucan with an endo-acting mode according to capillary electrophoretic analysis of cleavage products. CelE1 showed optimum hydrolytic activity at pH 7.0 and 50 °C with remarkable activity at alkaline conditions that is attractive for industrial applications in which conventional acidic cellulases are not suitable. Moreover, its three-dimensional structure was determined at 1.8 Å resolution that allowed the identification of an insertion of eight residues in the β8-α8 loop of the catalytic domain of CelE1, which is not conserved in its psychrophilic orthologs. This 8-residue-long segment is a prominent and distinguishing feature of thermotolerant cellulases 5 suggesting that it might be involved with thermal stability. Based on its unconventional characteristics, CelE1 could be potentially employed in biotechnological processes that require thermotolerant and alkaline cellulases.
This work describes the analysis of molecular spectroscopy in the UV/Vis region, as well as the study of transmittance, absorption, and reflectance phenomena in an undergraduate class using an LED ...(light emitting diodes)-photometer and digital image-based (DIB) method using a smartphone to compare with a benchtop spectrophotometer and literature data employing paired T-test for 95% confidence. The novelties of this work are focused on the use of simple, low-cost, and portable analytical instrumentation, based on an RGB-LED photometer and DIB using a smartphone, for teaching Chemistry to undergraduate classes. Moreover, discussions were held on concepts related to the Beer-Lambert law, spectroscopy, pH, equilibrium shift, and calculation for determining the equilibrium constant and pKa of bromothymol blue, which was used as proof of concept. The advantages are the use of low-cost instrumentation for teaching Chemistry, students’ access to concepts, such as radiation source, photodetector, transmittance calculation from analog data, regulation of the power of the light emitted by the LED, and details to understand the interaction between matter and light were described by undergraduate students in Physics and Chemistry throughout the course of Experiments in Thermodynamic and Chemical Equilibrium. The better understanding of theoretical concepts and the possibility of taking the RGB-LED-photometer and DIB instrumentation to schools, exhibitions, science fairs, and Chemistry teaching meetings were pointed out by students as the main advantages of the instrumentation and methods described.
Endogenous viral elements (EVEs) are found in many eukaryotic genomes. Despite considerable knowledge about genomic elements such as transposons (TEs) and retroviruses, we still lack information ...about nonretroviral EVEs.
mosquitoes have a highly repetitive genome that is covered with EVEs. Here, we identified 129 nonretroviral EVEs in the AaegL5 version of the
genome. These EVEs were significantly associated with TEs and preferentially located in repeat-rich clusters within intergenic regions. Genome-wide transcriptome analysis showed that most EVEs generated transcripts although only around 1.4% were sense RNAs. The majority of EVE transcription was antisense and correlated with the generation of EVE-derived small RNAs. A single genomic cluster of EVEs located in a 143 kb repetitive region in chromosome 2 contributed with 42% of antisense transcription and 45% of small RNAs derived from viral elements. This region was enriched for TE-EVE hybrids organized in the same coding strand. These generated a single long antisense transcript that correlated with the generation of phased primary PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs).
