Our aim was to quantify microplastic ingestion by fish assemblages in two tropical Brazilian estuaries and to evaluate whether biological and ecological factors influence the ingestion of ...microplastics by fish species. Of 2233 fish from both estuaries (from 69 species) examined in this study, 9% of the individuals (24 species) had microplastics in their gut contents. Microplastic ingestion occurred irrespective of fish size and functional group. The diet of fish species was analyzed based on prey items identified in the fish's full stomach contents and five feeding guilds were defined. Microplastics were common throughout all feeding guilds. Low (average ingestion values 1.06±0.30 items/total fish) but widespread occurrence among estuaries also indicates proliferation of microplastic pollution. Our findings highlight the need to focus on assemblage level studies to understand the real magnitude of the problem and emphasize the urgency of mitigation measures directed at microplastic pollution in estuarine ecosystems.

Aim
To evaluate the bending, buckling and torsional resistance of ProGlider (PG) (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland), R‐Pilot (RP) (VDW, Munich, Germany) and WaveOne Gold Glider (WOGG) ...(Dentsply Sirona).
Methodology
Ninety instruments were used: 30 PG (size 0.16, .02v taper), 30 RP (size 0.125, .04 taper) and 30 WOGG (size 0.15, .02v taper). The bending resistance test was performed on 10 randomly selected instruments of each system according to ISO 3630‐1 specifications. For the buckling resistance test, a loading was applied in the axial direction of each instrument using a universal test machine, with a 20 N cell and 15 mm min−1 speed, in the axial direction. When a lateral elastic displacement of 1 mm occurred, the force was registered. The torsional resistance test was performed according to ISO 3630‐1 specifications. Statistical analysis was performed using one‐way anova and post hoc Student–Newman–Keuls test (P < 0.05).
Results
WOGG had the lowest bending resistance, whilst RP had the highest bending resistance (P < 0.05). RP also had the highest buckling resistance, and WOGG had the lowest (P < 0.05). PG had intermediate results regarding bending and buckling resistance, with significant differences to RP and WOGG (P < 0.05). RP had the highest torsional strength and the lowest angular deflection when compared to PG and WOGG (P < 0.05). No differences in the torsional strength and angular deflection were observed between WOGG and PG (P> 0.05).
Conclusion
The glide path instruments had different behaviours in term of bending, buckling and torsional resistance.
Like estrogens in female rats, androgens can affect dendritic spine density in the CA1 subfield of the male rat hippocampus J Neurosci 23:1588 (2003). Previous light microscopic studies have shown ...that androgen receptors (ARs) are present in the nuclei of CA1 pyramidal cells. However, androgens may also exert their effects through rapid non-genomic mechanisms, possibly by binding to membranes. Thus, to investigate whether ARs are at potential extranuclear sites of ARs, antibodies to ARs were localized by light and electron microscopy in the male rat hippocampal formation. By light microscopy, AR immunoreactivity (-ir) was found in CA1 pyramidal cell nuclei and in disperse, punctate processes that were most dense in the pyramidal cell layer. Additionally, diffuse AR-ir was found in the mossy fiber pathway. Ultrastructural analysis revealed AR-ir at several extranuclear sites in all hippocampal subregions. AR-ir was found in dendritic spines, many arising from pyramidal and granule cell dendrites. AR-ir was associated with clusters of small, synaptic vesicles within preterminal axons and axon terminals. Labeled preterminal axons were most prominent in stratum lucidum of the CA3 region. AR-containing terminals formed asymmetric synapses or did not form synaptic junctions in the plane of section analyzed. AR-ir also was detected in astrocytic profiles, many of which apposed terminals synapsing on unlabeled dendritic spines or formed gap junctions with other AR-labeled or unlabeled astrocytes. Collectively, these results suggest that ARs may serve as both a genomic and non-genomic transducer of androgen action in the hippocampal formation.
This study aimed to develop and evaluate bread with the use of pulp and flours of pequi, in partial replacement of water and wheat flour, to develop a bakery product with good technological, ...nutritional and sensorial qualities. The pequi husk and pulp flours were obtained by means of a thermal pre-treatment, oven drying and standardization of the dry material. Whereas, the bread formulation was defined through the baker's formulation. Besides, the dehydration process caused significant changes (p<0.05) in the L* value and chromaticity (C*), mainly of the flours (husk and pequi pulp), such changes are due to non-enzymatic oxidative processes and pigment degradation, especially carotenoids. The effect of the substitution of ingredients (wheat flour and water) by husk and pulp flours and pequi pulp contributed to the increase in lipid, crude fiber, nitrogen-free extract and energy value content. However, the substitution promoted changes in the attributes of color and textural properties, such as increased hardness, chewiness and cohesiveness. Nevertheless, all formulations showed good sensory acceptance and thus, pequi sweet breads can be implemented in school meals for contributing and meeting the nutritional recommendations established by the School Feeding Brazilian Program (PNAE).
The aim of the present study was to test whether different degrees of human activity affect the diet of the Brazilian silverside Atherinella brasiliensis in two tropical estuaries. Fish were ...collected along the salinity gradient of two Brazilian estuaries, the heavily impacted Paraiba Estuary and the less impacted Mamanguape Estuary, in the dry and wet seasons. The findings confirm that A. brasiliensis has generalist feeding habits and is able to change its diet under different environmental conditions. The results indicate clear spatial (i.e. along the estuarine gradient) changes in diet composition in both estuaries, but diet was also influenced by the degree of anthropogenic disturbance. During the wet season in the nutrient enriched Paraiba Estuary, when human activity was higher, the diet of A. brasiliensis was poorer and dominated by few dietary items, reflecting the potential impoverishment of prey items in this heavily disturbed system. The specimens collected in the most affected estuary also had a greater frequency of micro‐plastics and parasites in their stomachs, reflecting the greater degree of human disturbance in the estuary. The present findings suggest that the diet of A. brasiliensis could be a useful indicator of changes in the ecological quality of these and other tropical estuaries of the western Atlantic Ocean.

The mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) is an inner-membrane transporter that facilitates pyruvate uptake from the cytoplasm into mitochondria. We previously reported that MPC1 protein levels increase in the hypothalamus of animals during fever induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), but how this increase contributes to the LPS responses remains to be studied. Therefore, we investigated the effect of UK 5099, a classical MPC inhibitor, in a rat model of fever, on hypothalamic mitochondrial function and neuroinflammation in LPS-stimulated preoptic area (POA) primary microcultures. Intracerebroventricular administration of UK 5099 reduced the LPS-induced fever. High-resolution respirometry revealed an increase in oxygen consumption and oxygen flux related to ATP synthesis in the hypothalamic homogenate from LPS-treated animals linked to mitochondrial complex I plus II. Preincubation with UK 5099 prevented the LPS-induced increase in oxygen consumption, ATP synthesis and spare capacity only in complex I-linked respiration and reduced mitochondrial H2O2 production. In addition, treatment of rat POA microcultures with UK 5099 reduced the secretion of the proinflammatory and pyrogenic cytokines TNFα and IL-6 as well as the immunoreactivity of inflammatory transcription factors NF-κB and NF-IL6 four hours after LPS stimulation. These results suggest that the regulation of mitochondrial pyruvate metabolism through MPC inhibition may be effective in reducing neuroinflammation and fever.
The sources of the majority of the high-energy astrophysical neutrinos observed with the IceCube neutrino telescope at the South Pole are unknown. So far, only a flaring gamma-ray blazar was ...compellingly associated with the emission of high-energy neutrinos. However, several studies suggest that the neutrino emission from the gamma-ray blazar population only accounts for a small fraction of the total astrophysical neutrino flux. In this work we probe the production of high-energy neutrinos in the cores of active galactic nuclei (AGN), induced by accelerated cosmic rays in the accretion disk region. We present a likelihood analysis based on eight years of IceCube data, searching for a cumulative neutrino signal from three AGN samples created for this work. The neutrino emission is assumed to be proportional to the accretion disk luminosity estimated from the soft x-ray flux. Next to the observed soft x-ray flux, the objects for the three samples have been selected based on their radio emission and infrared color properties. For the largest sample in this search, an excess of high-energy neutrino events with respect to an isotropic background of atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos is found, corresponding to a post-trial significance of 2.60σ. If interpreted as a genuine signal with the assumptions of a proportionality of x-ray and neutrino fluxes and a model for the subthreshold flux distribution, then this observation implies that at 100 TeV, 27%–100% of the observed neutrinos arise from particle acceleration in the core of AGN at 1σ confidence interval.
A supermassive black hole, obscured by cosmic dust, powers the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068. Neutrinos, which rarely interact with matter, could provide information on the galaxy’s active core. neutrinos at tera–electron volt energies, with a global significance of 4.2σ, which we interpret as associated with the active galaxy. The flux of high-energy neutrinos that we measured from NGC 1068 is more than an order of magnitude higher than the upper limit on emissions of tera–electron volt gamma rays from this source.
Nearby active galaxy emits neutrinos
Observations have shown a diffuse background of high-energy neutrinos, which is known to be of extragalactic origin. However, it has been difficult to identify individual sources that contribute to this background. The IceCube Collaboration reanalyzed the arrival directions of astrophysical neutrinos and then searched for point sources (see the Perspective by Murase). They identified evidence for neutrino emission from NGC 1068 (also known as Messier 77), a nearby active galaxy. Its properties are quite different from TXS 0506+056, which was found to be a neutrino source in 2018, leading the investigators to suggest that there might be more than one population contributing to the neutrino background. —KTS

Trypanosoma cruzi proliferative forms perform endocytosis through a specialized structure named the cytostome-cytopharynx complex (SPC). The SPC is a specialized invagination of the cell membrane ...that extends through the cell body towards the posterior regions, with its aperture close to the flagellar pocket. Recently, diverse proteins were found along the cytopharynx, including two myosin motors. One of these is the orphan myosin MyoF, that was proved to be essential for endocytosis in epimastigotes. However, the dynamics of MyoF localization along the endocytic pathway and through the T. cruzi life cycle remain unclear. Using CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, we generated epimastigotes expressing MyoF fused to mNeonGreen from its endogenous locus. Using these cells, we observed that during the epimastigote cell cycle MyoF signal disappeared during G2, reappearing at early cytokinesis. Additionally, we show that MyoF localization during metacyclogenesis is compatible with the progressive disappearance of the SPC, being absent in metacyclic trypomastigotes. Detergent fractionation showed that MyoF was predominantly present in the insoluble fraction and immunolocalized at the SPC microtubules in whole-mount cytoskeleton preparations. Moreover, during tracer uptake through the SPC, MyoF followed the tracer along the endocytic pathway and was found in posterior compartments after 30 min. Taken together, the data suggest that MyoF may play a role not only at the cargo entry site but also along the endocytic pathway.

The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, atomic nuclei that continuously impact Earth's atmosphere, is unknown. Because of deflection by interstellar magnetic fields, cosmic rays produced within the ...Milky Way arrive at Earth from random directions. However, cosmic rays interact with matter near their sources and during propagation, which produces high-energy neutrinos. We searched for neutrino emission using machine learning techniques applied to 10 years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. By comparing diffuse emission models to a background-only hypothesis, we identified neutrino emission from the Galactic plane at the 4.5σ level of significance. The signal is consistent with diffuse emission of neutrinos from the Milky Way but could also arise from a population of unresolved point sources.
