Abstract
The tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) provides a luminous standard candle for constructing distance ladders to measure the Hubble constant. In practice, its measurements via edge-detection ...response (EDR) are complicated by the apparent fuzziness of the tip and the multipeak landscape of the EDR. Previously, we optimized an unsupervised algorithm, Comparative Analysis of TRGBs, to minimize the variance among multiple halo fields per host without relying on individualized choices, achieving state-of-the-art ∼<0.05 mag distance measures for optimal data. Here we apply this algorithm to an expanded sample of SN Ia hosts to standardize these to multiple fields in the geometric anchor, NGC 4258. In concert with the Pantheon+ SN Ia sample, this analysis produces a (baseline) result of
H
0

Abstract The tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) is an apparent discontinuity of the luminosity function (LF) due to the end of the red giant evolutionary phase and is used to measure distances in the ...local universe. In practice, tip localization via edge detection response (EDR) relies on several methods applied on a case-by-case basis. It is hard to evaluate how individual choices affect a distance estimation using only a single host field while also avoiding confirmation bias. To devise a standardized approach, we compare unsupervised , algorithmic analyses of the TRGB in multiple halo fields per galaxy. We first optimize methods for the lowest field-to-field dispersion, including spatial filtering, smoothing, and weighting of LF, color band selection, and tip selection based on the number of likely RGB stars and the ratio of stars below versus above the tip ( R ). We find R , which we call the tip contrast , to be the most important indicator of the quality of EDR measurements; higher R selection can decrease field-to-field dispersion. Further, since R is found to correlate with the age or metallicity of the stellar population based on theoretical modeling, it might result in a displacement of the detected tip magnitude. We find a tip-contrast relation with a slope of −0.023 ± 0.0046 mag/ratio, an ∼5 σ result that can be used to correct these variations in the detections. When using TRGB to establish a distance ladder, consistent TRGB standardization using tip-contrast relation across rungs is vital to make robust cosmological measurements.

Biomass is considered to be one of the most easily available and high-potential renewable power sources. Pyrolysis and combustion are the most common ways of utilizing biomass. A ...complex multiple-criteria analysis to identify the most promising technology of using various types of biomass has never been previously performed. The study is focused on comparing two typical techniques of utilizing agricultural and forestry biomass for bioenergy and valorization. In this paper, the direct combustion and pyrolysis of biomass were experimentally studied. The environmental and energy performance parameter of the investigated processes were determined for separate biomass components (leaves, straw, sawdust) and a group of mixtures from them. It was established that the biomass mixtures combustion has better environmental characteristics. Thus, the main anthropogenic emissions decreased by 8–66%. In addition to that, the pyrolysis of a biomass mixture from a group of components has a 30% higher yield of combustible gases. The analysis of relative efficiency indicators of two processes where biomass was used as an energy resource showed that a biomass-derived composite fuel is more efficient than its individual components.

Emerging as a targeted, safe, and efficient pharmacotherapy is the approach of theranostics, which focuses on patient-centered care. It is a combination of diagnosis and therapeutics. It provides a ...transition from conventional medicine to personalized medicine. It deals with the custom made treatment plan based on uniqueness of every individual thus resulting in right drug for the right patient at the right time. Genetics plays a significant role in theranostics. Theranostics provides a cost-effective specific successful treatment protocol. Pharmacogenetics, proteomics and biomarker profiling forms the backbone of theranostics. The role of theranostics is interestingly appreciated at multi levels with special consideration in oncology wherein nano formulations in the form of liposomes, dendrimers, polymeric nanoparticles, metallic nanoparticles, quantum dots and carbon nanotubes play a very important role. Thus, theranostics is a holistic transition from trial and error medicine to predictive, preventive and personalized medicine leading to improved quality care of pharmacotherapy.
Abstract
We report observations of five dwarf galaxies in the vicinity of the luminous S0 galaxy NGC 3115 performed with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. Their distances ...determined via the Tip of the Red Giant Branch are: 10.05 Mpc (UGCA 193), 9.95 Mpc (KKSG 17), 10.13 Mpc (2MASX-J0957-0915), 10.42 Mpc (2dFGRS-TGN218Z179), and 11.01 Mpc (KKSG 19). With their typical distance error of about 0.75 Mpc all the five dwarfs are consistent to be true satellites of the host galaxy NGC 3115 (10.2 ± 0.2 Mpc). Using the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys we also found five new probable dwarf satellites of NGC 3115, as well as four new probable members of the neighboring group around NGC 3521 situated 3 Mpc away from the NGC 3115 group. Based on the radial velocities and projected separations of 10 dwarf companions, we derived the total (orbital) mass of NGC 3115 to be (4.89 ± 1.48) 10

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive malignancies, accounting for more than 45,750 deaths annually in the U.S. alone. The aggressive nature and late diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, coupled ...with the limitations of existing chemotherapy, present the pressing need for the development of novel therapeutic strategies. Recent reports have demonstrated a critical role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in the initiation, progression, and metastasis of cancer. Furthermore, aberrant expressions of miRNAs have often been associated with the cause and consequence of pancreatic cancer, emphasizing the possible use of miRNAs in the effective management of pancreatic cancer patients. In this review, we provide a brief overview of miRNA biogenesis and its role in fundamental cellular process and miRNA studies in pancreatic cancer patients and animal models. Subsequent sections narrate the role of miRNA in, (i) cell cycle and proliferation; (ii) apoptosis; (iii) invasions and metastasis; and (iv) various cellular signaling pathways. We also describe the role of miRNA's in pancreatic cancer; (i) diagnosis; (ii) prognosis and (iii) therapeutic intervention. Conclusion section describes the gist of review with future directions.
Background & objectives: Population-based seroepidemiological studies measure the extent of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a country. We report the findings of the first round of a national serosurvey, ...conducted to estimate the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection among adult population of India.
Methods: From May 11 to June 4, 2020, a randomly sampled, community-based survey was conducted in 700 villages/wards, selected from the 70 districts of the 21 States of India, categorized into four strata based on the incidence of reported COVID-19 cases. Four hundred adults per district were enrolled from 10 clusters with one adult per household. Serum samples were tested for IgG antibodies using COVID Kavach ELISA kit. All positive serum samples were re-tested using Euroimmun SARS-CoV-2 ELISA. Adjusting for survey design and serial test performance, weighted seroprevalence, number of infections, infection to case ratio (ICR) and infection fatality ratio (IFR) were calculated. Logistic regression was used to determine the factors associated with IgG positivity.
Results: Total of 30,283 households were visited and 28,000 individuals were enrolled. Population-weighted seroprevalence after adjusting for test performance was 0.73 per cent 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.34-1.13. Males, living in urban slums and occupation with high risk of exposure to potentially infected persons were associated with seropositivity. A cumulative 6,468,388 adult infections (95% CI: 3,829,029-11,199,423) were estimated in India by the early May. The overall ICR was between 81.6 (95% CI: 48.3-141.4) and 130.1 (95% CI: 77.0-225.2) with May 11 and May 3, 2020 as plausible reference points for reported cases. The IFR in the surveyed districts from high stratum, where death reporting was more robust, was 11.72 (95% CI: 7.21-19.19) to 15.04 (9.26-24.62) per 10,000 adults, using May 24 and June 1, 2020 as plausible reference points for reported deaths.
Interpretation & conclusions: Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 was low among the adult population in India around the beginning of May 2020. Further national and local serosurveys are recommended to better inform the public health strategy for containment and mitigation of the epidemic in various parts of the country.
Digital holographic microscopy (DHM) is one of the most effective techniques used for quantitative phase imaging of cells. Here we present a compact, easy to implement, portable, and very stable DHM ...setup employing a self-referencing Lloyd's mirror configuration. The microscope is constructed using a diode laser source and a CMOS sensor, making it cost effective. The reconstruction of recorded holograms yields the amplitude and phase information of the object. The temporal stability of the presented technique was found to be around 0.9 nm without any vibration compensation, which makes it ideal for studying cell profile changes. This aspect of the technique is demonstrated by studying membrane fluctuations of red blood cells.
