A Slovene contributor to Stanislaw Karolak's project "Porownawcza skladnia slowianskich jezykow drugiej polowy dwodziestego wieku" (Comparative Syntax of Slavic Languages of the Second Half of the ...Twentieth Century), launched in April 2001, discusses the onomasiological approach of the investigation, proceeding from logical semantic functions through semantic syntactic paradigms to structural syntactic paradigms. A typology of verbal valence in Contemporary Slovene is presented with the objective of contributing to future compilations of valence dictionaries in this language. The verbs biti 'to be', imeti 'to ...have', & delati 'to do/make' are posited as the primary forms (primitives) in the semantic valence hierarchy that also comprises three classes of basic verbs, designating (1) states, (2) active/inactive events & processes, & (3) phasic processes. The basic verbs constitute the fundamental classifying standard for verbal valence groups & the semantic-syntactic foundation & starting point for semantically specialized verbs of (A) treating, managing, & creating; (B) speaking, thinking, & understanding; (C) change; & (D) movement. Elementary verbs of natural phenomena & life processes constitute a special subgroup of basic verbs as they represent a valence synthesis of all the other semantic groups. The structural-syntactic valence of each group is described in terms of government, semantic role, & complement & characterized as to nominalization, adjectivization, & deverbal derivation. 25 References. The history of valence theory research in Slovene linguistics is outlined, tracing contributors from the 16th (eg, Bohoric, A., 1584) & 18th (eg, Pohlin, M., 1768; Gutsman, O., 1777) centuries up to ...the present day. The views on valence as a syntactic vs semantic phenomenon, the transition from syntagmatic to sentential valence in the 19th century (eg, Vodnik, V., 1811; Dajnko, P., 1824; Metelko, F., 1825), research in the interdependence between syntagmatic & sentential valence (eg, Janezic, A., 1854; Miklosic, F., 1868-1874), & the semantic-syntactic treatment of sentence constituents in the first decades of the 20th century (eg, Breznik, A., 1916) are presented. Multilevel approaches to valence elaborated in the second half of the 1970s (eg, Vincenot, C., 1975; Toporosic, J., 1976) & the surge of interest in valence in 1980s, especially its generative aspect, is illustrated with the principal authors & works published in this period. Presenting the development of Slovenian valency theory (with special reference to verbal valency) shows how from the 16th century onward, Slovenian syntax with its own characteristics & problems was ...gradually typified or formulated. This means that treatment from the initial general-linguistic comparative syntactic phenomena began to narrow & at the same time deepen in quality. The relations between the semantic, syntactic function & expressive levels of language through the centuries very clearly show the gradual perception of the Slovenian language from the initial merely surface-level comparative descriptions of the syntax (comparative descriptions of syntactic phenomena in Latin, German, & Slovenian) to treatments dealing with problems. Thus the early presentation of the basic use of the individual cases in Slovenian (the starting-point of the treatment is the expressive level) centers on the treatment of primarily Slovenian syntactic particularities represented by the syntactic function or clause element level in a clause-effect link with the semantic level of the language. 50 References. The article is a chronological & topical survey of the most relevant foreign literature on valence theory that directly or indirectly influenced the development of Slovene valence theory. At the same ...time, the overlap between various valence theories with mutually complementary features affirms & allows the generalized valence treatment of the sentence semantic base, & thus the generalized semantic-syntactic valence, which is the basis of specific structural-syntactic valences of individual languages. The development of Slovene word-formation theory is traced from V. Vodnik (1811) to the present, noting that the deverbal noun of action had already been classified as glagolje by A. Bohoric in 1584. ...The recognition of Slovene word formation as an independent field of study is due to F. Miklosic, who wrote in the 1860s & 1870s regarding the meaning/form relationship & provided a comprehensive inventory of suffixal formants representing all word-formational meanings, including the possible metonymic meaning shifts of derivatives. Miklosic also pointed out the relationship between word formation & syntax; later writers presented formational peculiarities of verbal nouns & other substantival derivatives with respect to verbal aspect & transitivity.
