The double-polarization observable E and helicity-dependent cross sections σ1/2, σ3/2 have been measured for the photoproduction of π0 pairs off quasifree protons and neutrons at the Mainz MAMI ...accelerator with the Crystal Ball/TAPS setup. A circularly polarized photon beam was produced by bremsstrahlung from longitudinally polarized electrons and impinged on a longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target. The reaction products were detected with an almost 4π covering calorimeter. The results reveal for the first time the helicity- and isospin-dependent structure of the γN → Nπ0π0 reaction. They are compared to predictions from reaction models in view of nucleon resonance contributions and also to a refit of one model that predicted results for the proton and for the neutron target. As a result, the comparison of the prediction and the refit demonstrates the large impact of the new data.
The characteristics of the Solid-state Neutron Detector, under development for neutron-scattering measurements at the European Spallation Source, have been simulated with a Geant4-based computer ...code. The code models the interactions of thermal neutrons and ionising radiation in the 6Li-doped scintillating glass of the detector, the production of scintillation light and the transport of optical, scintillation photons through the scintillator, en route to the photocathode of the attached multi-anode photomultiplier. Factors which affect the optical-photon transport, such as surface finish, pixelation of the glass sheet, provision of a front reflector and optical coupling media are compared. Predictions of the detector response are compared with measurements made with neutron and gamma-ray sources, a collimated alpha source and finely collimated beams of 2.5 MeV protons and deuterons.
The Dalitz decays η → e+e-γ and ω → π0e+e- have been measured in the γp → ηp and γp → ωp reactions, respectively, with the A2 tagged-photon facility at the Mainz Microtron. The value obtained for the ...slope parameter of the electromagnetic transition form factor of η, Λ$-2\atop{η}$ = (1.97 ± 0.11tot) GeV-2, is in good agreement with previous measurements of the η → e+e-γ and η → μ+μ-γ decays. The uncertainty obtained in the value of Λ$-2\atop{η}$ is lower than in previous results based on the η → e+e-γ decay. The value obtained for the ω slope parameter, Λ$-2\atop{ωπ^0}$ = (1.99 ± 0.21tot) GeV-2, is somewhat lower than previous measurements based on ω → π0μ+μ-, but the results for the ω transition form factor are in better agreement with theoretical calculations, compared to earlier experiments.
The γ n → π 0 n differential cross section evaluated for 27 energy bins span the photon-energy range 290– 813 MeV (W = 1.195–1.553 GeV) and the pion c.m. polar production angles, ranging from 18° to ...162°, making use of model-dependent nuclear corrections to extract π0 production data on the neutron from measurements on the deuteron target. Additionally, the total photoabsorption cross section was measured. The tagged photon beam produced by the 883 MeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI was used for the π0-meson production. Our accumulation of 3.6 × 106 γ n → π 0 n events allowed a detailed study of the reaction dynamics. Our data are in reasonable agreement with previous A2 measurements and extend them to lower energies. The data are compared with predictions of previous SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial-wave analyses and to the latest SAID fit MA19 that included our data. Selected photon-decay amplitudes N * → γ n at the resonance poles are determined for the first time.
Untagged gamma-ray and tagged-neutron yields from 241AmBe and 238PuBe mixed-field sources have been measured. Gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements from 1 to 5MeV were performed in an open environment ...using a CeBr3 detector and the same experimental conditions for both sources. The shapes of the distributions are very similar and agree well with previous data. Tagged-neutron measurements from 2 to 6MeV were performed in a shielded environment using a NE-213 liquid-scintillator detector for the neutrons and a YAP(Ce) detector to tag the 4.44MeVgamma-rays associated with the de-excitation of the first-excited state of 12C. Again, the same experimental conditions were used for both sources. The shapes of these distributions are also very similar and agree well with previous data, each other, and the ISO recommendation. Our 238PuBe source provides approximately 2.6 times more 4.44MeVgamma-rays and 2.4 times more neutrons over the tagged-neutron energy range, the latter in reasonable agreement with the original full-spectrum source-calibration measurements performed at the time of their acquisition.
•Untagged gamma-ray (1–5MeV) and tagged-neutron (2–6MeV) yields from Be compound sources are measured.•Shapes of gamma-ray distributions are similar and agree well with previous data and each other.•Shapes of neutron distributions are similar and agree well with previous data, each other, and the ISO 8529-2 recommendation.
Beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz in the three isospin channels gammaover -->p-->pi(+)pi(0)n, gammaover -->p-->pi(0)pi(0)p, and gammaover ...-->p-->pi(+)pi(-)p. The circularly polarized photons, produced from bremsstrahlung of longitudinally polarized electrons, were tagged with the Glasgow magnetic spectrometer. Charged pions and the decay photons of pi(0) mesons were detected in a 4pi electromagnetic calorimeter which combined the Crystal Ball detector with the TAPS detector. The precisely measured asymmetries are very sensitive to details of the production processes and are thus key observables in the modeling of the reaction dynamics.
Precise helicity-dependent cross sections and the double-polarization observable E were measured for η photoproduction from quasifree protons and neutrons bound in the deuteron. The η → 2γ and η → ...3π0 → 6γ decay modes were used to optimize the statistical quality of the data and to estimate systematic uncertainties. The measurement used the A2 detector setup at the tagged photon beam of the electron accelerator MAMI in Mainz. A longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target was used in combination with a circularly polarized photon beam from bremsstrahlung of a longitudinally polarized electron beam. The reaction products were detected with the electromagnetic calorimeters Crystal Ball and TAPS, which covered 98% of the full solid angle. The results show that the narrow structure observed earlier in the unpolarized excitation function of η photoproduction off the neutron appears only in reactions with antiparallel photon and nucleon spin (σ1/2). It is absent for reactions with parallel spin orientation (σ3/2) and thus very probably related to partial waves with total spin 1/2. The behavior of the angular distributions of the helicity-dependent cross sections was analyzed by fitting them with Legendre polynomials. The results are in good agreement with a model from the Bonn-Gatchina group, which uses an interference of P11 and S11 partial waves to explain the narrow structure.
The Compton double-polarization observable Σ 2z has been measured for the first time in the Δ (1232) resonance region using a circularly polarized photon beam incident on a longitudinally polarized ...proton target at the Mainz Microtron. This paper reports these results, together with the model-dependent extraction of four proton spin polarizabilities from fits to additional asymmetry data using either a dispersion relation calculation or a baryon chiral perturbation theory calculations with the weighted average of these two fits resulting in γE1E1=–2.87±0.52, γM1M1=2.70±0.43, γE1M2=–0.85±0.72 , and γM1E2=2.04±0.43 , in units of 10–4 fm4 .
The Dalitz decay π0 → e+e-γ has been measured in the γp → π0p reaction with the A2 tagged-photon facility at the Mainz Microtron, MAMI. The value obtained for the slope parameter of the π0 ...electromagnetic transition form factor, aπ= 0.030 ± 0.010tot, is in agreement with existing measurements of this decay and with recent theoretical calculations. The uncertainty obtained in the value of aπ is lower than in previous results based on the π0 → e+e-γ decay.
