The urachus is an embryonic remnant that usually involutes before birth. Abnormal persistence of this structure can lead to infectious or neoplastic complications later in life. We report a case of ...an 84-year-old man that presented with a urachal complex mass which, after proper investigation, revealed to be a urachal abscess. Urachal abscesses are rare and usually occur in severe infections. Urachal abscesses can be indistinguishable from urachus carcinoma on imaging studies. This article reviews the clinical and imaging aspects of urachal abscess and carcinoma and possible differentiating elements in imaging. However, definitive diagnosis usually depends on a biopsy or fluid aspiration.
Bone marrow stromal cell antigen-2 (BST-2)/Tetherin is a restriction factor that prevents Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) release from infected cells and mediates pro-inflammatory ...cytokine production. This study investigated the risk conferred by single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs919266, rs9192677, and rs9576) at BST-2 coding gene (BST2) in HIV-1 mother-to-child transmission and in disease progression. Initially, 101 HIV-1+ pregnant women and 331 neonates exposed to HIV-1 from Zambia were enrolled. Additional BST2 single nucleotide polymorphism analyses were performed in 2 cohorts with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) progression: an adult Brazilian cohort (37 rapid, 30 chronic and 21 long-term non-progressors) and an Italian pediatric cohort (21 rapid and 67 slow progressors). The rs9576A allele was nominally associated with protection during breastfeeding (P = 0.019) and individuals carrying rs919266 GA showed slower progression to AIDS (P = 0.033). Despite the influence of rs919266 and rs9576 on BST2 expression being still undetermined, a preventive role by BST2 polymorphisms was found during HIV-1 infection.
The human leukocyte antigen G (HLA-G) is a molecule involved in immune system modulation, acting in the maintenance of a state of immune tolerance. Some polymorphisms in the HLA-G gene 3′ ...untranslated region (3′UTR) were associated to distinct levels of HLA-G expression and to sepsis development. In the present study, haplotypes and polymorphisms of the HLA-G 3′UTR were analyzed in Brazilian septic patients.
The HLA-G 3′UTR was amplified by PCR, sequenced and eight polymorphisms were genotyped (the 14bp insertion/deletion, +3003T/C, +3010C/G, +3027A/C, +3035C/T, +3142G/C, +3187A/G and+3196C/G) in DNA samples from septic patients (with severe sepsis or septic shock) and controls. The haplotypes were inferred and association tests were performed through Chi square test and binary logistic regression.
The+3027AC genotype was associated asa risk factor to sepsis development (OR 3.17, PBonferroni 0.048). Further, the presence of the UTR-7 haplotype (OR 2.97, PBonferroni 0.018), and of 14bp-Ins_+3142G_+3187A haplotype (OR 2.39, PBonferroni 0.045) were associated with sepsis, conferring susceptibility.
Our data confirm an important role of HLA-G 3′UTR polymorphisms in the development of severe forms of sepsis (severe sepsis and septic shock). The genotyping of HLA-G genetic variants and haplotypes could be useful as a prediction tool of increased risk to severe sepsis.
Abstract Humid highland forest enclaves are remnants of Atlantic Forest found in tablelands within the Caatinga biome (Northeastern Brazil), which emerged during interglacial periods in the ...Pleistocene. These ecosystems have a highly diverse and endemic fish fauna. Most earlier surveys have focused on the tableland of Borborema (Pernambuco and Paraíba States). In this study we surveyed the fish fauna of the humid forest enclaves in the tablelands of Ibiapaba and Araripe, based on samples collected in the rainy season (March and April) between 2009 and 2014. The 45 sampling points covered rivers, streams and reservoirs in five river basins belonging to three ecoregions. The species were listed according to drainage divide, and endemism was determined for each ecoregion and for the Caatinga. Our area was more species-rich (n=59) than Borborema (n=27). The samples included five introduced species and 29 species endemic to the Caatinga (49.1% of the sampled species). The distribution of Parotocinclus haroldoi was expanded to the Mid-Northeastern Caatinga ecoregion (Timonha river basin, Ceará State). Our study intends to make a significant contribution to current knowledge of the ichthyofauna in humid highland forest enclaves of semiarid Northeastern Brazil, identified as a priority in the conservation of the biodiversity in the Caatinga.
