The contamination of coastal environments by metallurgical wastes involves multiple biogeochemical processes; accordingly, understanding metal behavior and risk evaluation of contaminated areas, such ...as Sepetiba Bay (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), remains challenging. This study coupled Zn isotopic analyses with sequential extractions (BCR) to investigate the mechanisms of Zn transfer between legacy electroplating waste and the main environments in Sepetiba Bay. This metallurgical waste showed a light bulk isotopic signature (δ66/64ZnbulkJMC = +0.30 ± 0.01‰, 2 s, n = 3) that was not distinct from the lithogenic geochemical baseline, but was different from signature of mangrove sediment considered as anthropogenic end member (δ66/64ZnJMC = +0.86 ± 0.15‰) in a previous isotopic study in this area. Zn isotopic compositions of sediment samples (ranging from +0.20 to +0.98‰) throughout the bay fit a mixing model involving multiple sources, consistent with previous studies. In the metallurgic zone, the exchangeable/carbonate fraction (ZnF1) exhibited high Zn concentrations (ZnF1 = 9840 μg g−1) and a heavy isotopic composition (δ66/64ZnF1JMC = +1.10 ± 0.01‰). This finding showed that, in some cases, the bulk isotopic signature of waste is not the most relevant criterion for evaluating trace metal dispersion in the environment. Indeed, based on the BCR, it was observed that part of the anthropogenic metallurgical Zn was redistributed from the exchangeable/carbonate fraction in the waste to the surrounding mangrove sediment. Then, this contaminated sediment with heavy δ66/64Zn values was exported to other coastal environments. In Sepetiba Bay, contaminated sediments revealed a large concentration of ZnF1 fraction (up to 400 μg g−1) with a heavy Zn isotopic signature. This signature also matched the Zn isotopic signature of oysters in Sepetiba Bay reported by other studies; hence, measurement of the isotopic exchangeable/carbonate fraction has important implications for tracing the transfer of anthropogenic Zn to biota.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, experienced a severe dengue fever epidemic in 2008. This was the worst epidemic ever, characterized by a sharp increase in case-fatality rate, mainly among younger ...individuals. A combination of factors, such as climate, mosquito abundance, buildup of the susceptible population, or viral evolution, could explain the severity of this epidemic. The main objective of this study is to model the spatial patterns of dengue seroprevalence in three neighborhoods with different socioeconomic profiles in Rio de Janeiro. As blood sampling coincided with the peak of dengue transmission, we were also able to identify recent dengue infections and visually relate them to Aedes aegypti spatial distribution abundance. We analyzed individual and spatial factors associated with seroprevalence using Generalized Additive Model (GAM).
Three neighborhoods were investigated: a central urban neighborhood, and two isolated areas characterized as a slum and a suburban area. Weekly mosquito collections started in September 2006 and continued until March 2008. In each study area, 40 adult traps and 40 egg traps were installed in a random sample of premises, and two infestation indexes calculated: mean adult density and mean egg density. Sera from individuals living in the three neighborhoods were collected before the 2008 epidemic (July through November 2007) and during the epidemic (February through April 2008). Sera were tested for DENV-reactive IgM, IgG, Nested RT-PCR, and Real Time RT-PCR. From the before-after epidemics paired data, we described seroprevalence, recent dengue infections (asymptomatic or not), and seroconversion. Recent dengue infection varied from 1.3% to 14.1% among study areas. The highest IgM seropositivity occurred in the slum, where mosquito abundance was the lowest, but household conditions were the best for promoting contact between hosts and vectors. By fitting spatial GAM we found dengue seroprevalence hotspots located at the entrances of the two isolated communities, which are commercial activity areas with high human movement. No association between recent dengue infection and household's high mosquito abundance was observed in this sample.
This study contributes to better understanding the dynamics of dengue in Rio de Janeiro by assessing the relationship between dengue seroprevalence, recent dengue infection, and vector density. In conclusion, the variation in spatial seroprevalence patterns inside the neighborhoods, with significantly higher risk patches close to the areas with large human movement, suggests that humans may be responsible for virus inflow to small neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro. Surveillance guidelines should be further discussed, considering these findings, particularly the spatial patterns for both human and mosquito populations.

of DSM on ethanol-induced gastric injury. DSM significantly reduced the ulcer area (1.940 ± 1.121 mm²) with 3 days of pretreatment. The effects of DSM supplementation were reversed by Resiniferatoxin (RTX), TRPV1 agonist (3 nmol/kg p.o.). Substance P (SP) (1 μmol/L per 20 g) plus 50% ethanol resulted in hemorrhagic lesions, and DSM supplementation did not reverse the lesion area induced by administering SP. TRPV1 staining intensity was lower, SP, malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitrite levels were reduced, and restored normal levels of
parameters (glutathione and superoxide dismutase) in the gastric mucosa in mice treated with DSM. In conclusion, DSM exhibited gastroprotective activity through decreased expression of TRPV1 receptor and decreasing SP levels, with a consequent reduction of oxidative stress.
Objective. Determine the fermentative profile, proximate composition, and aerobic stability of mixed silages of elephant grass combined with levels of forage peanut. Materials and methods. Different ...levels of forage peanut (0.0, 20.0, 40.0, 60.0, and 80.0% on FM basis) were added to elephant grass silages. A completely randomized design was adopted, with 5 treatments and 3 repetitions, totaling 15 experimental silos that were opened after 30 days of sealing. Fermentative profile, proximate composition, and aerobic stability were evaluated. Results. The increase in the forage peanut levels in the elephant grass silages promoted a increasing on porosity, permeability, density, and pH (p<0.001). A 0.58 reduction in Flieg index for every 1% forage peanut added to the elephant grass silage was observed (p<0.001). The sum of the silage temperature difference compared to the environment (p=0.032) and aerobic stability (p<0.001) showed a quadratic effect. The forage peanut inclusion in elephant grass silages reduced the dry matter, organic matter, neutral and acid detergent fiber, hemicellulose, cellulose, and total carbohydrates (p<0.05) and increased the mineral matter, crude protein, lignin, non-fibrous carbohydrates, and total digestible nutrients (p<0.05). Conclusions. Under the experimental conditions, recommend the inclusion of up to 40% forage peanut combined with elephant grass to compose mixed silages, due to the better fermentative dynamic, nutritional profile, and aerobic stability.
Objetivo. Determinar el perfil fermentativo, composición centesimal y estabilidad aerobia de ensilajes mezclados de hierba-elefante combinadas con niveles de maní forrajero. Materiales y métodos. Distintos niveles de maní forrajero (0,0, 20,0, 40,0, 60,0 y el 80,0% en la base de la materia fresca) se adicionaron a los ensilajes de hierba-elefante. Se adoptó el delineamento enteramente casualizado, con 5 tratamientos y 3 repeticiones, totalizando 15 silos experimentales que se abrieron tras 30 días de sellados. Perfil fermentativo, composición centesimal y estabilidad aerobia. Resultados. Se evaluaron el aumento de los niveles de maní forrajero en los ensilajes de hierba elefante promovió aumento en la porosidad, permeabilidad, densidad y pH (p<0,001). Se observó reducción de 0,58 en el índice de Flieg para cada 1% de maní forrajero adicionado al ensilaje de hierba -elefante (p<0,001). La suma de la diferencia de temperatura del ensilaje con relación al ambiente (p=0,032) y estabilidad aerobia (p<0,001) presentó efecto cuadrático. La inclusión de maní forrajero en los ensilajes de hierba elefante redujo la materia seca, materia orgánica, fibra en detergente neutro y ácido, hemicelulosa, celulose y carbohidratos totales (p<0,05) y aumentó la materia mineral, proteína bruta, lignina, carbohidratos no fibrosos, y nutrientes digestibles totales (p<0,05). Conclusiones. En las condiciones experimentales, se recomienda la inclusión de hasta el 40% de maní forrajero combinado con hierba elefante para componer ensilajes mezclados, debido a la mejor dinámica fermentativa, perfil nutricional y estabilidad aerobia.

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) in subjects with skeletal class II dentofacial deformity referred for orthognathic surgery, as well as to ...elucidate its association with sociodemographic and psychosocial features.
This was a cross-sectional study using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders. The sample comprised class II skeletal patients referred to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery center in the Brazilian Northeast.
Seventy-three subjects were enrolled and completed the data collection, which consisted of a physical examination according to Axis I of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders and facial analysis. Women represented 82.2% of the sample. Among the assessed subjects, 68.5% were already undergoing orthodontic treatment, and the mean overjet of patients was 6.97 mm. The prevalence of TMD in this sample was 46.6%, with muscular disorders being the most common. Patients with an anteroposterior discrepancy greater than 7 mm showed a higher occurrence of TMD (p = 0.017).
This study demonstrated a high prevalence of TMD in skeletal class II patients referred for orthognathic surgery, especially in those with a pronounced overjet, being Group I (muscular disorders) and Group III (degenerative disorders) the most prevalent.
The use of anesthetic agents in the management of fish in fish farming or ornamental fish breeding aims to minimize stress and promote animal welfare. Therefore, this study aims to investigate ...behavioral, electrocardiographic, and ventilatory characteristics of tambaquis exposed to anesthetic baths with etomidate. The study was conducted with juvenile tambaquis (27.38 ± 3.5g) n = 99, at etomidate concentrations of 2-4 mg.L .sup.-1, analyzing induction and anesthetic recovery behavior (experiment I), electrocardiogram (experiment II), and opercular movement (experiment III). Fish exposed to high concentrations of etomidate reached the stage of general anesthesia faster, however, the recovery time was longer, characterizing a dose-dependent relationship. Cardiorespiratory analyzes demonstrated a reduction in heart rate (69.19%) and respiratory rate (40.70%) depending on the concentration of etomidate used during anesthetic induction. During the recovery period, there was cardiorespiratory reversibility to normality. Therefore, etomidate proved to be safe as an anesthetic agent for this species at concentrations of 2 to 3 mg.L .sup.-1 for short-term anesthesia, but at higher doses the animals showed slow reversibility of anesthesia in a gradual manner and without excitability. The hemodynamic effect due to the rapid decrease in heart rate includes a negative factor of using higher concentrations of etomidate for Colossome macropomum anesthesia.
To evaluate the anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and antifibrotic effects of carvedilol (CARV) in rats with ethanol-induced liver injury.
Liver injury was induced by gavage administration of alcohol ...(7 g/kg) for 28 consecutive days. Eighty Wistar rats were pretreated with oral CARV at 1, 3, or 5 mg/kg or with saline 1 h before exposure to alcohol. Liver homogenates were assayed for interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α level as well as for myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and malonyldialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels. Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity and liver triglyceride (TG) levels were also assayed. Immunohistochemical analyses of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2), receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B/ligand (RANK/RANKL), suppressor of cytokine signalling (SOCS1), the Kupffer cell marker IBA-1 (ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1), intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), superoxide dismutase (SOD-1), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx-1) expression were performed. Confocal microscopy analysis of IL-1β and NF-κB expression and real-time quantitative PCR analysis for TNFα, PCI, PCIII, and NF-κB were performed.
CARV treatment (5 mg/kg) during the alcohol exposure protocol was associated with reduced steatosis, hepatic cord degeneration, fibrosis and necrosis, as well as reduced levels of AST (p < 0.01), ALT (p < 0.01), TG (p < 0.001), MPO (p < 0.001), MDA (p < 0.05), and proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and TNF-α, both p < 0.05), and increased levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 (p < 0.001) and GSH (p < 0.05), compared to the alcohol-only group. Treatment with CARV 5 mg/kg also reduced expression levels of COX-2, RANK, RANKL, IBA-1, and ICAM-1 (all p < 0.05), while increasing expression of SOCS1, SOD-1, and GPx-1 (all p < 0.05) and decreasing expression of IL-1β and NF-κB (both, p < 0.05). Real-time quantitative PCR analysis showed that mRNA production of TNF-α, procollagen type I (PCI), procollagen type III (PCIII), and NF-κB were decreased in the alcohol-CARV 5 mg/kg group relative to the alcohol-only group.
CARV can reduce the stress oxidative, inflammatory response and fibrosis in ethanol-induced liver injury in a rat model by downregulating signalling of Kuppfer cells and hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) through suppression of inflammatory cytokines.
The key to achieving pleasing esthetics in implant dentistry is a thorough understanding of the biological processes driving dimensional bone and soft tissue alterations post‐extraction. The aim of ...the present report is first to characterize the extent of bone and soft tissue changes post‐extraction and second to identify potential factors influencing tissue preservation in order to facilitate successful treatment outcomes. The facial bone wall thickness has been identified as the most critical factor influencing bone resorption and can be used as a prognostic tool in order to identify sites at risk for future facial bone loss subsequent to tooth extraction. Clinical studies indicated that thin bone wall phenotypes exhibiting a facial bone wall thickness of 1 mm or less revealed progressive bone resorption with a vertical loss of 7.5 mm, whereas thick bone wall phenotypes showed only minor bone resorption with a vertical loss of 1.1 mm. This is in contrast to the dimensional soft tissue alterations. Thin bone wall phenotypes revealed a spontaneous soft tissue thickening after flapless extraction by a factor of seven, whereas thick bone wall phenotypes showed no significant changes in the soft tissue dimensions after 8 weeks of healing. In sites exhibiting a limited bone resorption rate, immediate implant placement may be considered. If such ideal conditions are not present, other timing protocols are recommended to achieve predictable and pleasing esthetics. Socket preservation techniques for ridge preservation utilizing different biomaterials and/or barrier membranes often result in a better maintenance of tissue volumes, although the inevitable biological process of post‐extraction bone resorption and bone modeling cannot be arrested. In summary, the knowledge of the biological events driving dimensional tissue alterations post‐extraction should be integrated into the comprehensive treatment plan in order to limit tissue loss and to maximize esthetic outcomes.
