Among the challenges that wastewater treatment plants face in the path towards sustainability, reducing CO2 emissions and decrease the amount of waste highlight. Within these wastes, those that can ...cause eutrophication, such as nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous) are of great concern. Herein we study a novel process to concentrate nutrients via membrane technology. In particular, we propose the use of forward osmosis, applying the carbonated solvent which contains the CO2 captured from the biogas stream as draw solution. This carbonated solvent has a high potential osmotic pressure, which can be used in forward osmosis to concentrate the nutrients stream. To this end, we present the results of an experimental plan specifically designed and performed to evaluate two main parameters: (1) nutrients concentration; and (2) water recovery. The process designed involves pH adjustment, membrane filtration to separate solids, pH reduction and forward osmosis concentration of nutrients. With this process, concentrations factor for nutrients in between 2 and 2.5 and water recovery of approximately 50 % with water flux of 7 to 8 L/(m2h) can be achieved.

gene to determine the presence of pXFAS_5235 plasmid or other plasmids carrying this gene in a world-wide collection of 65 strains
from different subspecies and STs or in 226 plant samples naturally infected by the bacterium obtained from the different outbreaks of

Secretory phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) is the target antigen of the auto-antibodies produced in most (∼ 70%) patients with primary membranous nephropathy (pMN). The applicability of anti-PLA2R1 ...antibody monitoring for the prediction of MN recurrence in kidney transplant recipients still is a matter of debate.
We sought to characterize the presence and concentration of anti-PLA2R antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in a cohort of 21 patients with pMN before and after transplantation to evaluate whether anti-PLA2R concentrations could predict pMN recurrence.
The presence of pMN recurrence was significantly correlated with the existence of a positive ELISA assay at graft biopsy or with high level of anti-PLA2R1 activity before transplantation (P = 0.03). In the receiver operating characteristic analysis, anti-PLA2R levels (cut-off of 45 U/mL) during the pretransplantation period accurately predicted pMN recurrence, with a sensitivity of 85.3%, specificity of 85.1%, negative predictive value of 92%, and an area under the curve of 90.8%. This finding supports the hypothesis that anti-PLA2R cause pMN recurrence in humans and indicates the need to prove in an experimental model. Furthermore, 6 of 7 patients with recurrence were carriers of HLA DQA1* 05:01/05 and DQB1* 02:01, confirming these DQ alleles as those associated with higher anti-PLA2R levels.
This study is the first to demonstrate pretransplantation circulating anti-PLA2R antibodies in a cohort of renal transplant recipients who prospectively developed recurrent disease. Currently, anti-PLA2R levels measured by ELISA may be a rational tool to establish the risk of MN recurrence in renal allograft recipients.
Enthesitis is a cardinal feature of spondylarthritis (SpA), and the pelvis is a common site of enthesitis. This study aimed to establish the association between pelvic enthesis involvement on pelvic ...X-ray and SpA diagnosis through a radiographic enthesis index (REI) and to assess the reliability and accuracy of this REI.
The participants were SpA patients and a control group composed of patients with chronic lumbar pain without SpA. Three blinded observers assessed each pelvic radiography three times. Three zones were used: Zone I (ZI), the iliopubic ramus; Zone II (ZII), the pubic symphysis, and Zone III (ZIII), the ischiopubic ramus. A grading system was created from 0 to 3 Grade 0, normal; Grade 1, minimal changes (subcortical bone demineralization and/or periosteal wishkering, seen as radiolucency and trabeculation of the cortical bone upon tendon insertion); Grade 2, destructive changes (Grade 1 findings and erosions at the enthesis site); and Grade 3, findings of Grade 2 plus >2 mm whiskering out of the cortical bone) for the REI. The sum of the results of the three zones was called the total REI. For statistical analysis, we used the weighted kappa statistic adjusted for prevalence and bias using Gwet's agreement coefficient.
We enrolled 161 patients, 111 of them with SpA (39.6 % with axial SpA and 47.7 % with peripheral SpA) and 50 without SpA. In the SpA group, 36.7 % and 25.7 % had REI Grades 2 and 3 in ZIII, respectively, while only 6 % of the controls had these grades. For ZI, the frequency of Grades 1 to 3 was 42.3 % in the SpA group (8.1 %, 14.4 %, and 19.8 %, respectively), compared to only 2 % in the controls. ZII was unaffected in most of the patients with SpA (82.9 %) and in the controls (98 %). In the control group, Grade 0 was the most common REI grade in all three zones. The agreement was almost perfect for each zone and between the independent readers. The ROC-curve analysis showed that the highest performance areas were the total REI, ZIII, and ZI. Most (75 %) of the SpA patients without sacroiliitis on X-ray were REI-positive. The sensitivity of the REI for SpA diagnosis was 82 %, while the sensitivity of sacroiliitis on X-ray was 38.7 %.
The assessment of pelvic enthesis using the REI on pelvic radiography may be useful for SpA diagnosis. Total REI, ZIII, and ZI had the highest accuracy and almost perfect reliability. The REI is especially helpful in patients without sacroiliitis on imaging.
Abstract
The bluntnose knifefish Brachyhypopomus occidentalis is a primary freshwater fish from north-western South America and Lower Central America. Like other Gymnotiformes, it has an electric ...organ that generates electric discharges used for both communication and electrolocation. We assembled a high-quality reference genome sequence of B. occidentalis by combining Oxford Nanopore and 10X Genomics linked-reads technologies. We also describe its demographic history in the context of the rise of the Isthmus of Panama. The size of the assembled genome is 540.3 Mb with an N50 scaffold length of 5.4 Mb, which includes 93.8% complete, 0.7% fragmented, and 5.5% of missing vertebrate/Actinoterigie Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs. Repetitive elements account for 11.04% of the genome, and 34,347 protein-coding genes were predicted, of which 23,935 have been functionally annotated. Demographic analysis suggests a rapid effective population expansion between 3 and 5 Myr, corresponding to the final closure of the Isthmus of Panama (2.8–3.5 Myr). This event was followed by a sudden and constant population decline during the last 1 Myr, likely associated with strong shifts in both precipitation and sea level during the Pleistocene glacial-interglacial cycles. The de novo genome assembly of B. occidentalis will provide novel insights into the molecular basis of both electric signal productions and detection and will be fundamental for understanding the processes that have shaped the diversity of Neotropical freshwater environments.
The epidemiology, morbidity, and burden of disease related to airway sequelae associated with invasive mechanical ventilation in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic remain unclear.
This scoping ...review aims to summarize the current knowledge regarding airway sequelae after severe SARS-CoV-2 infection. This knowledge will help guide research endeavors and decision-making in clinical practice.
This scoping review will include participants of all genders, and no particular age group who developed post-COVID-19 airway-related complication will be excluded. No exclusion criteria will be applied from country, language, or document type. The information source will include analytical observational studies. Unpublished data will not be completely covered as gray literature will be covered. A total of 2 independent reviewers will participate in the process of screening, selection, and data extraction, and the whole process will be performed blindly. Conflict between the reviewers will be solved through discussion and an additional reviewer. The results will be reported by using descriptive statistics, and information will be displayed on RedCap (Research Electronic Data Capture).
The literature search was conducted in May 2022 in the following databases: PubMed, Embase, SCOPUS, Cochrane Library, as well as LILACS and gray literature to identify observational studies; a total of 738 results were retrieved. The scoping review will be finished by March 2023.
This scoping review will describe current knowledge on the most frequently encountered laryngeal or tracheal sequelae in patients exposed to mechanical ventilation due to SARS-CoV-2 infection. This scoping review will find the incidence of airway sequelae post COVID-19 and the most common sequelae such as airway granuloma, vocal fold paralysis, and airway stenoses. Future studies should evaluate the incidence of these disorders.

angelfishes are some of the most iconic marine fishes of the Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP). However, very limited genomic resources currently exist for the genus. In this study we: (i) assembled and ...annotated the nuclear genome of the King Angelfish (
), and (ii) examined the demographic history of
in the TEP. We generated 43.8 Gb of ONT and 97.3 Gb Illumina reads representing 75× and 167× coverage, respectively. The final genome assembly size was 583 Mb with a contig N50 of 5.7 Mb, which captured 97.5% of the complete Actinoterygii Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs (BUSCOs). Repetitive elements accounted for 5.09% of the genome, and 33,889 protein-coding genes were predicted, of which 22,984 were functionally annotated. Our demographic analysis suggests that population expansions of
occurred prior to the last glacial maximum (LGM) and were more likely shaped by events associated with the closure of the Isthmus of Panama. This result is surprising, given that most rapid population expansions in both freshwater and marine organisms have been reported to occur globally after the LGM. Overall, this annotated genome assembly provides a novel molecular resource to study the evolution of
angelfishes, while facilitating research into local adaptation, speciation, and introgression in marine fishes.
The olive tree is of particular economic interest in the Mediterranean basin. Researchers have conducted several studies on one of the most devastating disorders affecting this tree, the Verticillium ...wilt, which causes substantial economic losses in numerous areas. We analyzed metatranscriptomic samples taken from a previous study conducted on leaves and roots of Olea europaea that were infected with Verticillium dahliae. In addition, we also analyzed mechanically damaged roots. The aim of our approach is to describe the dynamics of the root microbiome after severe perturbations.
Our results not only describe the dynamics of the microbial community associated with the disturbance, but also show the high complexity of these systems and explain how this can lead to a conflicting assignment of the various types of parasitism observed in a specific organism.
Our findings indicate that this infection, although led by Verticillium, is driven not by a single species, but by a polymicrobial consortium that also includes natural endophytes of the olive tree. This community contains both biotrophic and necrotrophic organisms that alternate and live together during the infection. In addition, opportunistic organisms appear that take profit not from plant tissues, but from new emerging populations of microorganisms. Therefore, this system can be described as a complex biological system composed of different interacting communities. Notably, our work has important considerations when it comes to classifying the type of parasitism of a given species.
