A BASIC program (CDPROT) has been developed to calculate the secondary structure of proteins from their far UV circular dichroism spectrum. This implementation can use different reference spectra, ...calculated either from model polypeptides or proteins of known tertiary structure. Apart from obtaining the a-helical, β-structure, β-turns or random percentages which would generate the spectrum of best fit with respect to the experimental measures, CDPROT represents on screen both theoretical and experimental spectra indicating the root-mean-square error. The provision of additional reference spectra by the user is also considered, and another program (STOREREF) performs the editing in an adequate format for CDPROT.
Objetivo. Comparar la gravedad de la diarrea por rotavirus (RV) y por no rotavirus. Material y métodos. Estudio transversal en 520 lactantes con diarrea aguda, efectuado entre octubre de 1994 y marzo ...de 1995 en siete centros del primer nivel de atención en cinco estados de México. El diagnóstico de RV se realizó con ensayo inmunoenzimático o por electroforesis. El análisis se hizo a través de medidas de tendencia central. Los resultados se presentan como promedio y desviación estándar o mediana o variación. Resultados. Se aisló RV en 264 lactantes (50.7%) con predominio en varones de 6 meses a un año. Las manifestaciones clínicas fueron significativamente diferentes entre el grupo rotavirus positivo y el grupo rotavirus negativo en mediana de evacuaciones por 24 horas, frecuencia de vómitos, temperatura > 38° C, deshidratación y calificación de gravedad, respectivamente. Conclusiones. Estos resultados mostraron peor pronóstico por mayor gravedad de la diarrea por RV en lactantes, con relación a otra etiología. Material and Methods. Between October 1994 and March 1995, a cross-sectional study was performed in 520 infants with acute diarrhea, at seven primary care level centers in five states of Mexico. Diagnosis of RV was done through immunoenzymatic assay or electrophoresis. Central tendency measures were used for data analysis. Results were presented as means and standard deviations, or median and variation. Results. RV was isolated from 264 children; most of them were males aged 6 months to 1 year. Differences in clinical manifestations were statistically significant between the rotavirus-positive group and the rotavirus-negative group, in the following variables: median number of stools/24 hours; frequency of vomiting; temperature > 38°C; dehydration; and clinical severity scoring. Conclusions. These results showed a poorer prognosis and a higher severity of rotavirus diarrhea, as compared to non-rotavirus diarrhea in infants. An open-label, non-randomized study evaluated the feasibility and efficacy of filgrastim (recombinant methionyl human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, r-metHuG-CSF) to prevent mucositis induced ...by accelerated hyperfractionated radiotherapy (1.6 Gy b.i.d., total dose 67.2 Gy in six weeks with a two-week split) and concomitant chemotherapy (cisplatin, 20 mg/m2/day, days 1-5 by continuous intravenous infusion) in patients with laryngeal carcinoma. Filgrastim 300 w g/day was administered on days 1, 3, and 5 in weeks 2-6 of radiotherapy, after the second fraction. Twenty patients (three stage II, six stage III, and eleven stage IV, according to AJCC) were enrolled in the trial. Oral mucosal toxicity was grade 2 in nine patients (45%), grade 3 in eight (40%), and grade 4 in three (15%). Severe hematological toxicity (WHO criteria) was uncommon. Nineteen patients (95%) completed the treatment in the planned time. Overall survival was 55% at three years. The administration of filgrastim with this regimen was feasible, and it appearsed to reduce the severity and duration of mucositis induced by the combined treatment.
A power quality diagnosis campaign was done for the Line B of the Mexico City underground system to understand and improve its behaviour. A comparative analysis of the results obtained during the ...campaign is presented describing a method to improve the power quality. The AC distribution of this underground system consists of a set of transformers and multipulse rectifiers; however, the harmonic content is highly dominant by the 6k±1 harmonic order and the harmonic distribution is poorly mitigated by the load-balanced arrangement. The field measurement work, the practical issues at the power quality campaign and a proposal to improve the harmonic performance are explained together with the field and estimated results obtained with measurements realized to the AC medium voltage grid of the Mexico City Line B.
