C’est un événement essentiel dans l’histoire du radicalisme populaire ...britannique, qui provoqua à la fois le déclin du mouvement de manifestations en plein air, et la radicalisation de quelques militants révolutionnaires. « Le massacre de Peterloo » cristallisa l’opinion publique bien au-delà des frontières britanniques, et suscita des débats sur la liberté, la domination et la représentation. Ce volume rassemble des articles qui proposent des approches nouvelles et variées de cette période et des répercussions du mouvement né à Peterloo en Grande-Bretagne ainsi qu’une réflexion sur les liens avec d’autres bouleversements dans le monde en 1819 et 1820. The massacre at St. Peter’s Field in Manchester on 16th August 1819, when a peaceful meeting for democratic reform was suppressed by force, was a significant event in the history of British popular radicalism. It precipitated the decline of the ‘mass platform’ movement which had grown after the end of the Napoleonic Wars and galvanized the last acts of an ultra-radical revolutionary fringe. ‘Peterloo’, as it became known, also had repercussions in a wider European, colonial and international framework, crystalising, as it did, questions of freedom, domination and representation. This volume brings together a collection of new and diverse approaches to this period, and broadly seeks to understand some of the wider implications of Peterloo and its aftermath, as well as question anew its domestic significance over the course of 1819 and 1820.
Two alternatives for the treatment of lead intoxication, administration of zinc or a thiol donor, S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM), were analysed. Rats were exposed to lead (Pb)-acetate (60 mg/l) in ...drinking water during 90 days; one group also received SO4Zn in water (40 mg/l), while another received both Pb and SAM (5 mg/24 hr intraperitoneally. Erythrocytic delta-aminolaevulinic dehydratase (ALA-D) activity was significantly reduced (P < 0.001) both in rats receiving Pb alone and in rats receiving Pb and each of the other two treatments. The high erythrocytic uroporphyrinogen synthetase (URO-S) activity noticed in Pb administered rats, was significantly (P < 0.001) reduced in animals treated either with zinc or with SAM. Hepatic ALA-D activity tended to decrease while renal enzyme activity was not modified by the low level Pb exposure used in this work. Interestingly, SAM treated rats in both tissues exhibited significantly (P < 0.01) higher activities of the enzyme. It is argued that SAM treatment causes a surplus of thiols that allows the full expression of ALA-D catalytic activity.
Animal production are at the crossroads of new social, economic and environmental issues and sustainable development has become a priority for many years. In this context, the Poultry Technical ...Institute (ITAVI) and the National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA) have joined forces in a project combining methodological and experimental approaches with the following objectives: 1) To assess the sustainability of rabbits and waterfowl production units, 2) To propose innovations to improve the sustainability of the livestock systems, 3 ) To validate and communicate the results of the project. These four years of work led to the development of a tool for evaluation of sustainability for rabbit and waterfowls breeding units (DIAMOND method), formalized by the edition of a User Guide, and then declined in a suitable tool for the assessment of innovations in research. The DIAMOND method was built within a participatory approach. The analysis of data from the networks of reference farms give national references concerning environmental, social and economic performance and highlight the influence of farm characteristics and technical choices on sustainability. Seven innovations targeting feeding system, housing, reproduction and genetics were also tested and evaluated for potential gains of sustainability. This work is a valuable asset for the industry as a communication support but also as a strategic analysis to identify the margins of progress and priorities for action.
Les productions animales sont à la croisée de nouveaux enjeux sociaux, économiques et environnementaux et le développement durable est devenu une priorité depuis plusieurs années. C’est dans ce contexte que l’Institut Technique de l’AVIculture (ITAVI) et l’Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) se sont associés dans un projet combinant des approches méthodologique et expérimentale avec les objectifs suivants : 1) Evaluer la durabilité des pratiques d’élevage dans les ateliers lapins et palmipèdes ; 2) Proposer des innovations pour améliorer la durabilité des systèmes 3) Valider et communiquer les résultats du projet auprès des filières, de la recherche et du développement. Ces quatre ans de travaux ont abouti à l’élaboration d’une méthode d’évaluation de la durabilité des ateliers d’élevage (méthode DIAMOND), formalisée par l’édition d’un Guide d’utilisation, déclinée ensuite en un outil adapté à l’évaluation des innovations en condition de recherche. La méthode DIAMOND a été développée dans le cadre d’une démarche participative. L’analyse des données issues des réseaux de fermes de référence a permis de proposer des références nationales de performances économiques environnementales et sociales et de mettre en évidence l’influence des caractéristiques et des choix techniques des ateliers sur leur durabilité. Sept innovations portant sur différents leviers d’action ( alimentation, logement, reproduction et génétique) ont par ailleurs été testées et éprouvées, en termes de gains potentiel de durabilité pour l’atelier. Ce travail constitue un atout précieux pour les filières en termes de communication mais aussi d’analyse stratégique pour identifier les marges de progrès et les priorités d’action.
