Infection by Mycobacterium ulcerans constitutes a neglected tropical disease whose prevalence seems to have overrun those of cutaneous tuberculosis and leprosy. Its aggressivity depends on a ...mycolactone toxin. Lesions may involve skin, tendon and bone with a large spectrum of manifestations: non-ulcerative (papules, nodules, plaques), ulcerative and oedematous presentations as well as osteomyelitis with muscular contraction and ankylosis. Upper limbs account for more than two thirds of the infection sites. Surgical treatment may involve tendon transpositions, partial and total skin grafts. Amputation is relegated to extreme cases.
Selected iconography from patients during the last 15 years is presented. At least 1500 cases had partial skin grafts (anterior thigh). Total skin grafts (inguinal region) were used in about 200 cases. Complex lesions involved 9 ilioinguinal flaps (5 boys, 4 girls, mean age 11.2 years, range 2-16 years), 5 tendon transfers (4 boys, one girl, mean age 15.4 years, range 12-19 years) and 3 resections of the first carpal row (2 girls, 1 boy, mean age 8 years, range 4-15 years).
Out of 9 ilioinguinal flaps mild, marginal necrosis was the only complication in 2 patients without flap loss. Mean hospital stay was 26.44 days (range, 18-41 days), with return to full weight-bearing after a mean of 12 weeks (range 9-25 weeks) after discharge. Functional thumb opposition to allow pencil prehension was achieved in all three cases of resection of first carpal row resection without postoperative complications.
We developed a liquid hydrogen target dedicated to missing mass spectroscopy using radioactive isotope beams. The target has a circular aperture of 20 mm and a maximum thickness of 1.5 mm at the ...center. A test experiment with a 12C beam at 54.4 MeV/u was performed at GANIL. The 12C(p,d)11C reaction was measured with the charged-particle telescopes MUST2. An excitation energy resolution of 500-keV r.m.s. was obtained for the observed ground state. The target thickness was confirmed from the comparison of the measured differential cross sections to previous measurements.
We present the characterization of a Diamond detector and its response as a beam rate monitor with full stopping of radioactive ion beams of high intensity. The detector has been implemented in the ...VAMOS focal plane at GANIL and utilised in conjunction with AGATA and MUGAST detector systems. In the present experiment, for the first time, the beam has been fully stopped, rather than being recorded by a transmission detector. The Diamond detector has been tested for use as a particle counter for monitoring a high intensity, radioactive ion beam in the study of the alpha transfer reaction 7Li(15O,t)19Ne. The present experiment, which took place in July 2019, has used a 15O radioactive beam with a high intensity of 107 particles per second due to the weak reaction population and it has been measured using the VAMOS spectrometer and the AGATA and MUGAST arrays. Detailed monitoring of beam intensities in the range of 106 - 107 particles per second is particularly challenging in radioactive ion beam experiments. Thus, the chosen method involves the diamond detector due to its sub-nanosecond response time as well as its radiation hardness. The study of the alpha transfer reaction 7Li(15O,t)19Ne will be performed to determine the radiative alpha capture rate on 15O which is a key breakout route from the Hot-CNO cycle which leads to a explosive nucleosynthesis in X-ray bursts.

The Giant Pairing Vibration, a two-nucleon collective mode originating from the second shell above the Fermi surface, has long been predicted and expected to be strongly populated in two-nucleon ...transfer reactions with cross sections similar to those of the low-lying Pairing Vibration. Recent experiments have provided evidence for this mode in
14, 15
C but, despite sensitive studies, it has not been definitively identified in Sn or Pb nuclei where pairing correlations are known to play a crucial role near their ground states. In this paper we review the basic theoretical concepts of this “elusive” state and the status of experimental searches in heavy nuclei. We discuss the hindrance effects due to
Q
-value mismatch and the use of weakly-bound projectiles as a way to overcome the limitations of the
(
p
,
t
)
and
(
t
,
p
)
reactions. We also discuss the role of the continuum and conclude with some possible future developments.
The GRIT (Granularity, Resolution, Identification, Transparency) Silicon array is intended to measure direct reactions. Its design is based on several layers (three layers in the forward direction, ...two backward) of custom-made trapezoidal and square detectors. The first stage is 500 μm thick and features 128 × 128 orthogonal strips. Pulse shape analysis for particle identification is implemented for this first layer. Given the compacity of this array and the large number of channels involved (>7500), an integrated preamplifier, iPACI, that gives charge and current information has been developed in the AMS 0.35 μm BiCMOS technology. The design specifications and results of the test bench are presented. Considering an energy range of 50 MeV and an energy resolution (FWHM) of 12 keV (FWHM) for the preamplifier, the energy resolution for one strip obtained from alpha source measurement in real conditions is 35 keV. The current output bandwidth is measured at 130 MHz for small signals and the power consumption reaches 40 mW per detector channel. A first beam test was performed coupling a nTD trapezoidal double-sided stripped Silicon detector of GRIT with the iPACI preamplifier and a 64-channel digitizer. Z = 1 particles are discriminated with pulse shape analysis technique down to 2 MeV for protons, 2.5 MeV for deuterons and 3 MeV for tritons. The effect of the strip length due to the trapezoidal shape of the detector is investigated on both the N- and the P-side, showing no significant impact.
