Modelling the anisotropies in the cosmic infrared background (CIB) on all the scales is a challenging task because the nature of the galaxy evolution is complex and too many parameters are therefore ...often required to fit the observational data. We present a new halo model for the anisotropies of the CIB using only four parameters. Our model connects the mass accretion on the dark matter haloes to the star formation rate. Despite its relative simplicity, it is able to fit both the
Planck
and
Herschel
CIB power spectra and is consistent with the external constraints for the obscured star formation history derived from infrared deep surveys used as priors for the fit. Using this model, we find that the halo mass with the maximum efficiency for converting the accreted baryons into stars is log

Planck
and
Herschel
CIB power spectra. The high angular resolution of
Herschel
allows us to reach very small scales, making it possible to constrain the shot noise and the one-halo term separately, which is difficult to do using the
Planck
data alone. However, we find that large angular scale
Planck
and
Herschel
data are not fully compatible with the small-scale
Herschel
data (for ℓ > 3000). The CIB is expected to be correlated with the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (tSZ) signal of galaxy clusters. Using this halo model for the CIB and a halo model for the tSZ with a single parameter, we also provide a consistent framework for calculating the CIB × tSZ cross correlation, which requires no additional parameter. To a certain extent, the CIB at high frequencies traces galaxies at low redshifts that reside in the clusters contributing to the tSZ, giving rise to the one-halo term of this correlation, while the two-halo term comes from the overlap in the redshift distribution of the tSZ clusters and CIB galaxies. The CIB × tSZ correlation is thus found to be higher when inferred with a combination of two widely spaced frequency channels (e.g. 143 × 857 GHz). We also find that even at ℓ ∼ 2000, the two-halo term of this correlation is still comparable to the one-halo term and has to be accounted for in the total cross-correlation. The CIB, tSZ, and CIB × tSZ act as foregrounds when the kinematic SZ (kSZ) power spectrum is measured from the cosmic microwave background power spectrum and need to be removed. Because of its simplistic nature and the low number of parameters, the halo model formalism presented here for these foregrounds is quite useful for such an analysis to measure the kSZ power spectrum accurately.
We present a linear clustering model of cosmic infrared background (CIB) anisotropies at large scales that is used to measure the cosmic star formation rate density up to redshift 6, the effective ...bias of the CIB, and the mass of dark matter halos hosting dusty star-forming galaxies. This is achieved using the Planck CIB auto- and cross-power spectra (between different frequencies) and CIB × CMB (cosmic microwave background) lensing cross-spectra measurements, as well as external constraints (e.g. on the CIB mean brightness). We recovered an obscured star formation history which agrees well with the values derived from infrared deep surveys and we confirm that the obscured star formation dominates the unobscured formation up to at least z = 4. The obscured and unobscured star formation rate densities are compatible at 1σ at z = 5. We also determined the evolution of the effective bias of the galaxies emitting the CIB and found a rapid increase from ~0.8 at z = 0 to ~8 at z = 4. At 2 < z < 4, this effective bias is similar to that of galaxies at the knee of the mass functions and submillimetre galaxies. This effective bias is the weighted average of the true bias with the corresponding emissivity of the galaxies. The halo mass corresponding to this bias is thus not exactly the mass contributing the most to the star formation density. Correcting for this, we obtained a value of log(Mh/M⊙) = 12.77−0.125+0.128 for the mass of the typical dark matter halo contributing to the CIB at z = 2. Finally, using a Fisher matrix analysis we also computed how the uncertainties on the cosmological parameters affect the recovered CIB model parameters, and find that the effect is negligible.
The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) Large Program to INvestigate CII at Early times (ALPINE) targets the CII 158
μ
m line and the far-infrared continuum in 118 spectroscopically confirmed ...star-forming galaxies between
z
= 4.4 and
z
= 5.9. It represents the first large CII statistical sample built in this redshift range. We present details regarding the data processing and the construction of the catalogs. We detected 23 of our targets in the continuum. To derive accurate infrared luminosities and obscured star formation rates (SFRs), we measured the conversion factor from the ALMA 158
μ
m rest-frame dust continuum luminosity to the total infrared luminosity (
L
IR
) after constraining the dust spectral energy distribution by stacking a photometric sample similar to ALPINE in ancillary single-dish far-infrared data. We found that our continuum detections have a median
L
IR
of 4.4 × 10
11
L
⊙
. We also detected 57 additional continuum sources in our ALMA pointings. They are at a lower redshift than the ALPINE targets, with a mean photometric redshift of 2.5 ± 0.2. We measured the 850
μ
m number counts between 0.35 and 3.5 mJy, thus improving the current interferometric constraints in this flux density range. We found a slope break in the number counts around 3 mJy with a shallower slope below this value. More than 40% of the cosmic infrared background is emitted by sources brighter than 0.35 mJy. Finally, we detected the CII line in 75 of our targets. Their median CII luminosity is 4.8 × 10

L

and their median full width at half maximum is 252 km s
−1
. After measuring the mean obscured SFR in various CII luminosity bins by stacking ALPINE continuum data, we find a good agreement between our data and the local and predicted SFR–
L
CII
relations.
According to the current understanding of cosmic structure formation, the precursors of the most massive structures in the Universe began to form shortly after the Big Bang, in regions corresponding ...to the largest fluctuations in the cosmic density field. Observing these structures during their period of active growth and assembly-the first few hundred million years of the Universe-is challenging because it requires surveys that are sensitive enough to detect the distant galaxies that act as signposts for these structures and wide enough to capture the rarest objects. As a result, very few such objects have been detected so far. Here we report observations of a far-infrared-luminous object at redshift 6.900 (less than 800 million years after the Big Bang) that was discovered in a wide-field survey. High-resolution imaging shows it to be a pair of extremely massive star-forming galaxies. The larger is forming stars at a rate of 2,900 solar masses per year, contains 270 billion solar masses of gas and 2.5 billion solar masses of dust, and is more massive than any other known object at a redshift of more than 6. Its rapid star formation is probably triggered by its companion galaxy at a projected separation of 8 kiloparsecs. This merging companion hosts 35 billion solar masses of stars and has a star-formation rate of 540 solar masses per year, but has an order of magnitude less gas and dust than its neighbour and physical conditions akin to those observed in lower-metallicity galaxies in the nearby Universe. These objects suggest the presence of a dark-matter halo with a mass of more than 100 billion solar masses, making it among the rarest dark-matter haloes that should exist in the Universe at this epoch.
We present the ancillary data and basic physical measurements for the galaxies in the ALMA Large Program to Investigate C+ at Early Times (ALPINE) survey-the first large multiwavelength survey that ...aims at characterizing the gas and dust properties of 118 main-sequence galaxies at redshifts 4.4 < z < 5.9 via the measurement of emission at (64% at >3.5 ) and the surrounding far-infrared continuum in conjunction with a wealth of optical and near-infrared data. We outline in detail the spectroscopic data and selection of the galaxies as well as the ground- and space-based imaging products. In addition, we provide several basic measurements including stellar masses, star formation rates (SFR), rest-frame ultra-violet (UV) luminosities, UV continuum slopes (β), and absorption line redshifts, as well as H emission derived from Spitzer colors. We find that the ALPINE sample is representative of the 4 < z < 6 galaxy population selected by photometric methods and only slightly biased toward bluer colors (Δβ ∼ 0.2). Using as tracer of the systemic redshift (confirmed for one galaxy at z = 4.5 out of 118 for which we obtained optical λ3727 emission), we confirm redshifted Ly emission and blueshifted absorption lines similar to findings at lower redshifts. By stacking the rest-frame UV spectra in the rest frame, we find that the absorption lines in galaxies with high specific SFR are more blueshifted, which could be indicative of stronger winds and outflows.
Massive galaxy clusters have been found that date to times as early as three billion years after the Big Bang, containing stars that formed at even earlier epochs
. The high-redshift progenitors of ...these galaxy clusters-termed 'protoclusters'-can be identified in cosmological simulations that have the highest overdensities (greater-than-average densities) of dark matter
. Protoclusters are expected to contain extremely massive galaxies that can be observed as luminous starbursts
. However, recent detections of possible protoclusters hosting such starbursts
do not support the kind of rapid cluster-core formation expected from simulations
: the structures observed contain only a handful of starbursting galaxies spread throughout a broad region, with poor evidence for eventual collapse into a protocluster. Here we report observations of carbon monoxide and ionized carbon emission from the source SPT2349-56. We find that this source consists of at least 14 gas-rich galaxies, all lying at redshifts of 4.31. We demonstrate that each of these galaxies is forming stars between 50 and 1,000 times more quickly than our own Milky Way, and that all are located within a projected region that is only around 130 kiloparsecs in diameter. This galaxy surface density is more than ten times the average blank-field value (integrated over all redshifts), and more than 1,000 times the average field volume density. The velocity dispersion (approximately 410 kilometres per second) of these galaxies and the enormous gas and star-formation densities suggest that this system represents the core of a cluster of galaxies that was already at an advanced stage of formation when the Universe was only 1.4 billion years old. A comparison with other known protoclusters at high redshifts shows that SPT2349-56 could be building one of the most massive structures in the Universe today.
We study the efficiency of galactic feedback in the early Universe by stacking the C II 158
μ
m emission in a large sample of normal star-forming galaxies at 4 <
z
< 6 from the ALMA Large Program ...to INvestigate C II at Early times (ALPINE) survey. Searching for typical signatures of outflows in the high-velocity tails of the stacked C II profile, we observe (i) deviations from a single-component Gaussian model in the combined residuals and (ii) broad emission in the stacked C II spectrum, with velocities of |
v
|≲500 km s
−1
. The significance of these features increases when stacking the subset of galaxies with star formation rates (SFRs) higher than the median (SFR
med
= 25
M
⊙
yr
−1
), thus confirming their star-formation-driven nature. The estimated mass outflow rates are comparable to the SFRs, yielding mass-loading factors of the order of unity (similarly to local star-forming galaxies), suggesting that star-formation-driven feedback may play a lesser role in quenching galaxies at
z
> 4. From the stacking analysis of the datacubes, we find that the combined C II core emission (|
v
|< 200 km s
−1
) of the higher-SFR galaxies is extended on physical sizes of ∼30 kpc (diameter scale), well beyond the analogous C II core emission of lower-SFR galaxies and the stacked far-infrared continuum. The detection of such extended metal-enriched gas, likely tracing circumgalactic gas enriched by past outflows, corroborates previous similar studies, confirming that baryon cycle and gas exchanges with the circumgalactic medium are at work in normal star-forming galaxies already at early epochs.

The South Pole Telescope (SPT) has systematically identified 81 high-redshift, strongly gravitationally lensed, dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) in a 2500 square degree cosmological ...millimeter-wave survey. We present the final spectroscopic redshift survey of this flux-limited (S870 m > 25 mJy) sample, initially selected at 1.4 mm. The redshift survey was conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array across the 3 mm spectral window, targeting carbon monoxide line emission. By combining these measurements with ancillary data, the SPT sample is now spectroscopically complete, with redshifts spanning 1.9 < z < 6.9 and a median of . We present the millimeter through far-infrared photometry and spectral energy density fits for all sources, along with their inferred intrinsic properties. Comparing the properties of the SPT sources to the unlensed DSFG population, we demonstrate that the SPT-selected DSFGs represent the most extreme infrared-luminous galaxies, even after accounting for strong gravitational lensing. The SPT sources have a median star formation rate of and a median dust mass of . However, the inferred gas depletion timescales of the SPT sources are comparable to those of unlensed DSFGs, once redshift is taken into account. This SPT sample contains roughly half of the known spectroscopically confirmed DSFGs at z > 5, making this the largest sample of high-redshift DSFGs to date, and enabling the "high-redshift tail" of extremely luminous DSFGs to be measured. Though galaxy formation models struggle to account for the SPT redshift distribution, the larger sample statistics from this complete and well-defined survey will help inform future theoretical efforts.
We present C ii observations of 20 strongly lensed dusty star-forming galaxies at 2.1 < z < 5.7 using Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment and Herschel. The sources were selected on their 1.4 mm flux (S
1.4 ...mm > 20 mJy) from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) survey, with far-infrared (FIR) luminosities determined from extensive photometric data. The C ii line is robustly detected in 17 sources, all but one being spectrally resolved. 11 out of 20 sources observed in C ii also have low-J CO detections from Australia Telescope Compact Array. A comparison with mid- and high-J CO lines from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array reveals consistent C ii and CO velocity profiles, suggesting that there is little differential lensing between these species. The C ii, low-J CO and FIR data allow us to constrain the properties of the interstellar medium. We find C ii to CO(1–0) luminosity ratios in the SPT sample of 5200 ± 1800, with significantly less scatter than in other samples. This line ratio can be best described by a medium of C ii and CO emitting gas with a higher C ii than CO excitation temperature, high CO optical depth τCO(1–0) ≫ 1, and low to moderate C ii optical depth

≲ 1. The geometric structure of photodissociation regions allows for such conditions.
