Obesity belongs to civilization diseases with its incidence and prevalence increasing all over the world. Complications of obesity represent a serious socioeconomic problem. Obesity is a part of the ...metabolic syndrome and an independent mortality risk factor in all age categories, however, this relation is twice as strong in individuals under fifty years of age. Slight overweight in old age is associated with reduced total mortality risk. Simple evaluation of obesity via calculation of body mass index and measurement of waist circumference can be carried out in every medical consulting room.
Conservative methodology for estimation of a potential dose in caves employs solid state alpha track detectors. Obtained data are converted into annual effective dose in agreement with the ICRP ...recommendations (using the “caves factor”). The more precisely determined dose value would have a significant impact on the radon remedies or on restricting the time guides spent in the underground. To define the calculation of the effective dose in caves, the following measurements were carried out: continual radon measurement (differences in ERC between working hours and nighttime and daily and seasonal radon concentration variations); regular radon and daughters measurements; regular indoor air flow measurements to study the location of radon supply and its transfer among individual areas of the cave; natural radioactive elements content evaluation in subsoils and in water inside/outside to study radon sources in the cave; aerosol particle-size spectrum measurements for determination of free fraction (cave–apartment comparison); guides/visitors behaviour monitoring to record time spent in cave and to assign it to the continuously monitored levels of Rn concentration.
The goal of the DIRAC experiment at CERN (PS212) is to measure the π+π− atom lifetime with 10% precision. Such a measurement would yield a precision of 5% on the value of the S-wave ππ scattering ...lengths combination |a0−a2|. Based on part of the collected data we present a first result on the lifetime, τ=2.91−0.62+0.49×10−15 s, and discuss the major systematic errors. This lifetime corresponds to |a0−a2|=0.264−0.020+0.033mπ−1.
The authors present a case of an acute myocardial infarction in a patient with Turner syndrome, leading to the death of the patient. An emphasis is put on the need of a thorough examination of ...cardiovascular system, specialized on congenital heart disease including aortic dilatation with the risk of dissection, and early development of ischemic heart disease. Regular monitoring as well as adequate therapy in patients suffering from this genetically determined disorder is recommended.
Turner syndrome is one of the most frequent genetic disorders, the result of complete or partial monosomy of the X chromosome. It affects 1 : 2,500 live female births. The principal features of ...Turner syndrome are short stature and ovarian dysgenesis accompanied by estrogen deficit. Turner syndrome is associated with further numerous, more or less serious abnormalities and high risk of cardiovascular mortality. The article concisely summarizes the most frequent problems in Turner syndrome and emphasizes the need of multidisciplinary care for affected patients.

The DIRAC spectrometer has been commissioned at CERN with the aim of detecting π+π− atoms produced by a 24GeV/c high intensity proton beam in thin foil targets. A challenging apparatus is required to ...cope with the high interaction rates involved, the triggering of pion pairs with very low relative momentum and the measurement of the latter with resolution around 0.6MeV/c. The general characteristics of the apparatus are explained and each part is described in some detail. The main features of the trigger system, data-acquisition, monitoring and set-up performances are also given.
