Sono passati cinquant'anni da quando Gianfranco Folena propose l'etichetta di veneziano de la da mar in riferimento ai volgari venezianeggianti diffusi nel Mediterraneo orientale del Medioevo e della ...prima eta moderna, dalla Dalmazia all'Egeo (con Creta) fino all'Oltremare crociato. Da allora, su impulso del saggio di Folena, diverse ricerche si sono concentrate su singole aree (Ragusa/Dubrovnik, Candia/Creta, Cipro), facendo luce sulle dinamiche sociolinguistiche del contatto fra il veneziano e le lingue locali e sulle caratteristiche strutturali delle scriptae venezianeggianti attestate. Mancava ancora, pero, un'opera generale, che fungesse al contempo da sintesi delle ricerche gia pubblicate e da punto di partenza per indagini future. E questo lo scopo del presente libro, che raccoglie i contributi di alcuni fra i maggiori specialisti del veneziano fuori e anche dentro Venezia. La progressione dei saggi secondo le macroaree (Venezia e l'Oltremare; Dalmazia; Candia e il Levante), i frequenti rimandi interni e l'ampio indice onomastico sono concepiti per fare del volume un'opera di riferimento, interamente dedicata a un capitolo importante e ancora poco noto di storia delle varieta italo-romanze fuori d'Italia.

By studying letters sent by several Ottoman governors to the Grand Dukes of Tuscany in the years 1577-1640, the paper aims to contribute to a better definition of the so-called 'Levant Italian', the ...variety of Italian which served as a commercial and diplomatic lingua franca between Turks and Westerners in the Early Modern Ottoman Empire. These letters, currently kept at the State Archives of Florence, are Italian translations of original Turkish or Arabic texts, which were made in loco by Sephardic merchants and brokers who traded in the Mediterranean and occasionally served as interpreters. The analysis of the main orthographic, phonetic, morpho-syntactic, and lexical features of the letters shows the existence of a wide net of Jewish traders/interpreters sharing similar linguistic uses.
