We discuss a class of mechanical models of thermometers and their minimal requirements to determine the temperature for systems out of the common scope of thermometry. In particular we consider: 1) ...anharmonic chains with long time of thermalization, such as the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) model; 2) systems with long-range interactions where the equivalence of ensembles does not always hold; 3) systems featuring absolute negative temperatures. We show that for all the three classes of systems a mechanical thermometer model can be designed: a temporal average of a suitable mechanical observable of the thermometer is sufficient to get an estimate of the system's temperature. Several interesting lessons are learnt from our numerical study: 1) the long thermalization times in FPU-like systems do not affect the thermometer, which is not coupled to normal modes but to a group of microscopic degrees of freedom; 2) a thermometer coupled to a long-range system measures its microcanonical temperature, even at values of the total energy where its canonical temperature would be very different; 3) a thermometer to read absolute negative temperatures must have a bounded total energy (as the system), otherwise it heavily perturbs the system changing the sign of its temperature. Our study shows that in order to work in a correct way also in "non standard" cases, the proper model of thermometer must have a special functional form, e.g. the kinetic part cannot be quadratic.
The potential role of sonography in evaluating the response to therapy of persistent knee joint synovitis (KJS) was assessed in a longitudinal study in pre-and post-arthroscopic (AS) synovectomy in ...rheumatoid and psoriatic patients. At entry to the study ultrasound (US) detection of synovial proliferation was compared with arthroscopic visualization as the 'gold standard' reference. US joint effusion and synovial thickness measures and predominant patterns of synovial proliferation were recorded by comparing clinical and US indices before and at 2, 6 and 12 months after AS synovectomy, or after KJS relapse up to 24 months. A 12 month survival analysis of clinical and US outcomes of arthroscopic synovectomy was also performed. US detection of morphology and degree of synovial proliferation was correlated with AS macroscopic evaluation. After AS synovectomy, the clinical index and both US joint effusion and synovial thickness were significantly reduced, whereas US patterns of synovial proliferation did not show significant changes. US and clinical indices were significantly correlated in all follow-up measurements and US joint effusion was significantly increased in the relapsed compared with the non-relapsed KJS group. The probability at 12 months of reaching maximum improvement in US joint effusion and synovial thickness outcomes was 99 and 58%, respectively; that for clinical remission of KJS was 72%. Ultrasound evaluation has proven reliable and accurate by the arthroscopic gold standard in detecting changes of rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis knee joint synovitis. The correlation of US with clinical findings in pre-and post synovectomy patients suggests that sonography can be used as an objective method in monitoring the response to therapy of inflammatory knee joint disease.
A long-term prospective study was performed to evaluate the safety and long-term outcome of surgical arthroscopy (AS) for persistent rheumatoid (RA) and psoriatic (PsA) knee joint synovitis (KJS). ...Local signs of joint inflammation (tenderness, swelling, "ballottement') and range of motion (ROM) were scored and the sum, taken as a global outcome measure, was recorded in 17 RA and 18 PsA knees, both before and at follow-up periods of 2, 6, 12, 24 and 36 months after surgical AS (knee joint synovectomy; meniscal curettage, cartilage shaving or chondrectomy, according to the degree of cartilage damage). A survival analysis (Kaplan-Meier) of the long-term outcome of surgical AS treatment and of the predictive value of clinical parameters of knee joint involvement was also performed. No intra- or post-operative morbidity, pain worsening or loss of joint motion was observed and all patients were discharged within 48 h. Comparison of the parameters of knee joint evaluation showed a significant reduction of the signs of joint inflammation and a significant increase in the ROM in all follow-up periods. At 36 months, the survival curves showed a 61.2% cumulative probability of clinical remission and 72.8% of definite improvement. No significant differences in the prognostic importance of RA, compared to PsA diagnosis, were observed, although higher percentages of PsA compared to RA knees (86.3% and 45.7% respectively) reached the end point of clinical remission at 36 months. KJS duration, radiographic severity and cartilage damage were not predictors of poor long-term outcome of AS synovectomy. Surgical AS treatment for PsA knees with more advanced cartilage damage gave a better long-term outcome. A total of 50.7% of operated knees reached the end point of a KJS relapse at 36 months, the majority (82%) within the initial 18 months of follow-up. Our study indicates that AS synovectomy is a safe procedure requiring short hospitalization which, in combination with second-line medical treatment, can reduce local inflammation in RA and PsA KJS, and preserve knee joint ROM for up to 3 yr.

El modelo se ha aplicado a diferented escenarios de futuro en un horizonte temporal de 10 anos. El objectivo es estimar la evolucion en el tiempo de un conjunto de diez indicadores de sostenibilidad en la zona, cuando se engrentan a un escario alternativo al actual, en el que se combinan una reforma de la Politica Agraria COmun tendente a la mejora ambiental y la aplicacion de la Directive Marco de Aguas. Los resultados muestran que, en el escenario alternativo propuesto, el desarrollo socioeconomico seria mas lento que si se continuara con la actual normatica, pero la mejora ambiental es apreciable...A multiperiod model based upon a Multicriteria objective function is developed in a representative area of the Guadalquivir Valley, dividing the irrigated area into homogeneous types of farming as identified by cluster analysis to obtain later, aggregated results. The model is applied to different future scenarios with a time horizon of 10 years and different farming environments. A set of ten sustainability indicators is evaluated. The results show that the evolution of crops over time, in alternative Scenario proposed, is closely related to the political environment regarding the Common Agricultural Policy and the application of the Water Framework Directive. The results show a lower socioeconomic development in the proposed scenario, but it would be accompanied by an environmental improvement.

Abstract
The European FP7 project DIANA has performed a coherent analysis of a large set of observational data of protoplanetary disks by means of thermo-chemical disk models. The collected data ...include extinction-corrected stellar UV and X-ray input spectra (as seen by the disk), photometric fluxes, low and high resolution spectra, interferometric data, emission line fluxes, line velocity profiles and line maps, which probe the dust, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and the gas in these objects. We define and apply a standardized modeling procedure to fit these data by state-of-the-art modeling codes (
ProDiMo
,
MCFOST
,
MCMax
), solving continuum and line radiative transfer (RT), disk chemistry, and the heating and cooling balance for both the gas and the dust. 3D diagnostic RT tools (e.g., FLiTs) are eventually used to predict all available observations from the same disk model, the DIANA-standard model. Our aim is to determine the physical parameters of the disks, such as total gas and dust masses, the dust properties, the disk shape, and the chemical structure in these disks. We allow for up to two radial disk zones to obtain our best-fitting models that have about 20 free parameters. This approach is novel and unique in its completeness and level of consistency. It allows us to break some of the degeneracies arising from pure Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) modeling. In this paper, we present the results from pure SED fitting for 27 objects and from the all inclusive DIANA-standard models for 14 objects. Our analysis shows a number of Herbig Ae and T Tauri stars with very cold and massive outer disks which are situated at least partly in the shadow of a tall and gas-rich inner disk. The disk masses derived are often in excess to previously published values, since these disks are partially optically thick even at millimeter wavelength and so cold that they emit less than in the Rayleigh–Jeans limit. We fit most infrared to millimeter emission line fluxes within a factor better than 3, simultaneously with SED, PAH features and radial brightness profiles extracted from images at various wavelengths. However, some line fluxes may deviate by a larger factor, and sometimes we find puzzling data which the models cannot reproduce. Some of these issues are probably caused by foreground cloud absorption or object variability. We derive a class of mesoscopic virial equations governing energy partition between conjugate position and momentum variables of individual degrees of freedom. They are shown to apply to a wide range ...of nonequilibrium steady states with stochastic (Langevin) and deterministic (Nosé-Hoover) dynamics, and to extend to collective modes for models of heat-conducting lattices. A macroscopic virial theorem ensues upon summation over all degrees of freedom. It allows for the derivation of generalised (nonequilibrium) equations of state that involve average dissipative heat flows besides genuine state variables, as exemplified for inertial Brownian motion with solid friction and overdamped active Brownian particles subject to inhomogeneous pressure.
We propose a set of standard assumptions for the modelling of Class II and III protoplanetary disks, which includes detailed continuum radiative transfer, thermo-chemical modelling of gas and ice, ...and line radiative transfer from optical to cm wavelengths. The first paper of this series focuses on the assumptions about the shape of the disk, the dust opacities, dust settling, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In particular, we propose new standard dust opacities for disk models, we present a simplified treatment of PAHs in radiative equilibrium which is sufficient to reproduce the PAH emission features, and we suggest using a simple yet physically justified treatment of dust settling. We propose to use line observations of robust chemical tracers of the gas, such as O, CO, and H2, as additional constraints to determine a number of key properties of the disks, such as disk shape and mass, opacities, and the dust/gas ratio, by simultaneously fitting continuum and line observations.
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted pathogen and the cause of several cancers and of anogenital warts. With this study, we estimated the trend of hospitalizations for ...anogenital warts (AGWs) in the Veneto region (Italy) from 2007 to 2018.
The analysis included all the hospital discharge records of public and accredited private hospitals occurred in Veneto residents in the timespan 2007-2018. The ICD9-CM code 078.11 considered were those associated with condyloma acuminatum and those associated with surgical interventions for vulval/vaginal warts, penile warts anal warts. Annual total and sex- and age-specific hospitalization rates and trends were calculated and correlated with the different HPV vaccine coverage over the study period.
We observed an overall reduction of hospitalization rates for AGWs: from 15.0 hospitalizations every 100,000 Veneto residents in years 2007-08 to 10.9 hospitalizations every 100,000 Veneto residents in year 2017-18 (- 37.4%; p < 0.05). Reduction has been caused by a drop in hospitalizations in females - from a rate of 20.4/100,000 in 2007-2008 to a rate of 10.8/100,000 in 2017-18 (AAPC: -7.1; 95%CI: - 10.6;-3.4); while in males, we observed a slight - but not statistically significant - increase in hospitalization rates.
The marked decline in hospitalization rates for AGWs in Veneto Region is probably attributable to the high coverage rates of HPV vaccination programs implemented since 2008.
