We study the energy-momentum tensor and helicity of gauge fields coupled through g ϕ F ˜ F / 4 to a pseudoscalar field ϕ driving inflation. Under the assumption of a constant time derivative of the ...background inflaton, we compute analytically divergent and finite terms of the energy density and helicity of gauge fields for any value of the coupling g . We introduce a suitable adiabatic expansion for mode functions of physical states of the gauge fields which correctly reproduces ultraviolet divergences in average quantities and identifies corresponding counterterms. Our calculations shed light on the accuracy and the range of validity of approximated analytic estimates of the energy density and helicity terms previously existed in the literature in the strongly coupled regime only, i.e., for g ˙ ϕ / ( 2 H ) ≫ 1 . We discuss the implications of our analytic calculations for the backreaction of quantum fluctuations onto the inflaton evolution.
Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-KP) is becoming a common cause of healthcare-associated infection in Italy, with high morbidity and mortality. Prevalent CR-KP clones and resistance ...mechanisms vary between regions and over time. Therapeutic approaches and their impact on mortality have to be investigated. We performed a prospective study of patients with CR-KP isolation, hospitalized in nine hospitals of Rome, Italy, from December 2010 to May 2011, to describe the molecular epidemiology, antibiotic treatment and risk factors for mortality. Overall, 97 patients (60% male, median age 69 years) were enrolled. Strains producing blaKPC-3 were identified in 89 patients, blaVIM in three patients and blaCTX-M-15 plus porin defects in the remaining five patients. Inter-hospital spread of two major clones, ST512 and ST258, was found. Overall, 36.1% and 20.4% of strains were also resistant to colistin and tigecycline, respectively. Infection was diagnosed in 91 patients who received appropriate antibiotic treatment, combination therapy and removal of the infectious source in 73.6%, 59.3% and 28.5% of cases, respectively. Overall, 23 different antibiotic regimens were prescribed. In-hospital mortality was 25.8%. Multivariate analysis adjusted for appropriate treatment, combination therapy and infectious-source removal, showed that Charlson comorbidity score, intensive-care unit onset of infection, bacteraemia and infection due to a colistin-resistant CR-KP strain were independent risk factors for mortality. The spread of clones producing K. pneumoniae carbapenemases, mainly ST258, is currently the major cause of CR-KP infection in central Italy. We observed a high rate of resistance to colistin that is independently associated with worse outcome.
We compare Einstein-Boltzmann solvers that include modifications to general relativity and find that, for a wide range of models and parameters, they agree to a high level of precision. We look at ...three general purpose codes that primarily model general scalar-tensor theories, three codes that model Jordan-Brans-Dicke (JBD) gravity, a code that models f(R) gravity, a code that models covariant Galileons, a code that models Hořava-Lifschitz gravity, and two codes that model nonlocal models of gravity. Comparing predictions of the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background and the power spectrum of dark matter for a suite of different models, we find agreement at the subpercent level. This means that this suite of Einstein-Boltzmann solvers is now sufficiently accurate for precision constraints on cosmological and gravitational parameters.
We present a new isocurvature mode present in scalar-tensor theories of gravity that corresponds to a regular growing solution in which the energy of the relativistic degrees of freedom and the ...scalar field that regulates the gravitational strength compensate during the radiation dominated epoch on scales much larger than the Hubble radius. We study this isocurvature mode and its impact on anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background for the simplest scalar-tensor theory, i.e. the extended Jordan–Brans–Dickegravity, in which the scalar field also drives the acceleration of the Universe. We use Planck data to constrain the amplitude of this isocurvature mode in the case of fixed correlation with the adiabatic mode and we show how this mode could be generated in a simple two field inflation model.
Between 2015 and the beginning of 2018 (January-March), 30 cetaceans were found stranded along the Ligurian Sea coast of Italy. Necropsies were performed in 22 cases and infectious diseases resulted ...the most common cause of death. Three striped dolphins, showed a severe coinfection involving the monophasic variant of Salmonella Typhimurium (Salmonella 1,4,5,12:i:-). The isolates were characterized based on antimicrobial resistance, Multiple-Locus Variable-number tandem-repeat Analysis (MLVA) and whole-genome sequencing (WGS). All isolates demonstrated the same multidrug resistant genotype (ASSuT isolates), showed three different MLVA profiles, two of which closely related, and were identified as Sequence Type 34. Moreover, Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) analysis confirmed strong correlations between two out of the three isolates. To our knowledge, S. 1,4,5,12:i:-, one of the most common serovars in cases of human infection and food sources worldwide, has not previously been described in marine mammals, and reports of Salmonella-associated disease in free-ranging cetaceans are rare. These results highlight the role of cetaceans as sentinel species for zoonotic and terrestrial pathogens in the marine environment, suggest a potential risk for cetaceans and public health along the North Western Italian coastline and indicate cetaceans as a novel potential reservoir for one of the most widespread Salmonella serovars.
Errors in analysis using natural marks have been recognised since the early development of mark-recapture techniques. In this nine-year study, the mark types present on Cuvier's beaked whales Ziphius ...cavirostris in the Mediterranean Sea were categorised in order to assess the reliability of natural marks for long-term photo-identification studies. Mark prevalence, abundance and gain/loss rates among age/sex classes were investigated. Results showed that Cuvier's beaked whales were extensively marked (96% of population; mean = 48 marks per individual, range 0-169), with up to 10 different mark types. However, only five mark types should be considered reliable: notch, large scar, back indentation, medium scrape and large stripe. Marks caused by intraspecific interaction were the most abundant and prevalent mark types. In high-quality photographs, 71% of the population was reliably marked, but reliable marks were unevenly distributed within the population and their prevalence appeared to be strongly correlated to age and sex of individuals. The gain rate of scrapes that could be used reliably for identification was six times higher in mature males than females of the same age. This was the case for mature as well as immature males, suggesting that aggressive interaction among males may start early in their life, before reaching maturity. This difference between sexes may cause an over-representation of males in a typical photo-identification database, especially among immature individuals.
