Previous studies showed conflicting results, but the ...predominant localization reported was the peritubular interstitial and tubular epithelial cells. This study was conducted to identify the erythropoietin-producing cells in renal biopsies from 10 cadaveric donors and 45 patients with familial amyloidosis ATTR V30M, thirteen of them with anemia. Familial amyloidosis Type I (FAP-I) is a genetic disorder caused by a transthyretin (TTR) protein variant presenting a single amino acid substitution of methionine for valine at position 30 of the polypeptide chain (TTR V30M). Anemia in FAP-I is associated with inappropriately low serum erythropoietin levels.
erythropoietin expression was detected by in situ hybridization (ISH) and confirmed by laser capture microdissection followed by PCR. Renal segments were identified by immunohistochemistry.
erythropoietin was mainly expressed by epithelial distal tubular cells and collecting tubules and additionally, in a few biopsies, by glomerular cells. A similar expression pattern was observed in donors and FAP-I patients. No increased mRNA erythropoietin expression was found in anemic patients, all of them presenting only a slight expression in medulla and cortex.
these results suggest the distal nephron as the major site of erythropoietin production, and support the notion that an inappropriate erythropoietin production is the cause of anemia in familial amyloidosis ATTR V30M.

LHCb has designed and implemented an integrated Experiment Control System. The Control System uses the same concepts and the same tools to control and monitor all parts of the experiment: the Data ...Acquisition System, the Timing and the Trigger Systems, the High Level Trigger Farm, the Detector Control System, the Experiment's Infrastructure and the interaction with the CERN Technical Services and the Accelerator. LHCb's Run Control, the main interface used by the experiment's operator, provides access in a hierarchical, coherent and homogeneous manner to all areas of the experiment and to all its sub-detectors. It allows for automated (or manual) configuration and control, including error recovery, of the full experiment in its different running modes. Different instances of the same Run Control interface are used by the various sub-detectors for their stand-alone activities: test runs, calibration runs, etc. The architecture and the tools used to build the control system, the guidelines and components provided to the developers, as well as the first experience with the usage of the Run Control will be presented

About half of the baryons of the Universe are expected to be in the form of filaments of hot and low-density intergalactic medium. Most of these baryons remain undetected even by the most advanced ...X-ray observatories, which are limited in sensitivity to the diffuse low-density medium. The Planck satellite has provided hundreds of detections of the hot gas in clusters of galaxies via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect and is an ideal instrument for studying extended low-density media through the tSZ effect. In this paper we use the Planck data to search for signatures of a fraction of these missing baryons between pairs of galaxy clusters. The Planck satellite mission has provided the first SZ detection of the hot and diffuse intercluster gas.

We make use of the Planck all-sky survey to derive number counts and spectral indices of extragalactic sources -- infrared and radio sources -- from the Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue ...(ERCSC) at 100 to 857 GHz. Three zones (deep, medium and shallow) of approximately homogeneous coverage are used to permit a clean and controlled correction for incompleteness, which was explicitly not done for the ERCSC, as it was aimed at providing lists of sources to be followed up. The submillimetre number counts are not well reproduced by current evolution models of dusty galaxies, whereas the millimetre part appears reasonably well fitted by the most recent model for synchrotron-dominated sources. Finally we provide estimates of the local luminosity density of dusty galaxies, providing the first such measurements at 545 and 857 GHz.
This paper describes the methods used to produce photometrically calibrated maps from the Planck High Frequency Instrument (HFI) cleaned, time-ordered information. HFI observes the sky over a broad ...range of frequencies, from 100 to 857 GHz. To obtain the best calibration accuracy over such a large range, two different photometric calibration schemes have to be used. By comparing observations taken more than one year apart in the same configuration, we have identified apparent gain variations with time. We also discuss the cross-calibration between HFI and the SPIRE instrument on board Herschel. Finally we summarize the basic characteristics of the set of HFI maps included in the 2013 Planck data release.

The survey of galaxy clusters performed by Planck through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect has already discovered many interesting objects, thanks to its full sky coverage. One of the SZ candidates ...detected in the early months of the mission near to the signal-to-noise threshold, PLCKG214.6+37.0, was later revealed by XMM-Newton to be a triple system of galaxy clusters. We present the results from a deep XMM-Newton re-observation of PLCKG214.6+37.0, part of a multi-wavelength programme to investigate Planck discovered superclusters. The characterisation of the physical properties of the three components has allowed us to build a template model to extract the total SZ signal of this system with Planck data.We have partly reconciled the discrepancy between the expected SZ signal derived from X-rays and the observed one, which are now consistent within 1.2sigma. We measured the redshift of the three components with the iron lines in the X-ray spectrum, and confirm that the three clumps are likely part of the same supercluster structure. The analysis of the dynamical state of the three components, as well as the absence of detectable excess X-ray emission, suggests that we are witnessing the formation of a massive cluster at an early phase of interaction.

The first level trigger of LHCb accepts one million events per second. After preprocessing in custom FPGA-based boards these events are distributed to a large farm of PC-servers using a high-speed ...Gigabit Ethernet network. Synchronisation and event management is achieved by the Timing and Trigger system of LHCb. Due to the complex nature of the selection of B-events, which are the main interest of LHCb, a full event-readout is required. Event processing on the servers is parallelised on an event basis. The reduction factor is typically 1/500. The remaining events are forwarded to a formatting layer, where the raw data files are formed and temporarily stored. A small part of the events is also forwarded to a dedicated farm for calibration and monitoring. The files are subsequently shipped to the CERN Tier0 facility for permanent storage and from there to the various Tier1 sites for reconstruction. In parallel files are used by various monitoring and calibration processes running within the LHCb Online system. The entire data-flow is controlled and configured by means of a SCADA system and several databases. After an overview of the LHCb data acquisition and its design principles this paper will emphasize the LHCb event filter system, which is now implemented using the final hardware and will be ready for data-taking for the LHC startup. Control, configuration and security aspects will also be discussed.
The LIGO discoveries have rekindled suggestions that primordial black holes (BHs) may constitute part to all of the dark matter (DM) in the Universe. Such suggestions came from 1) the observed merger ...rate of the BHs, 2) their unusual masses, 3) their low/zero spins, and 4) also from the independently uncovered cosmic infrared background (CIB) fluctuations signal of high amplitude and coherence with unresolved cosmic X-ray background (CXB). Here we summarize the prospects to resolve this important issue with electromagnetic observations using the instruments and tools expected in the 2020's. These prospects appear promising to make significant, and potentially critical, advances. We demonstrate that in the next decade, new space- and ground-borne electromagnetic instruments, combined with concurrent theoretical efforts, should shed critical light on the long-considered link between primordial BHs and DM. Specifically the new data and methodologies under this program will involve: I) Probing with high precision the spatial spectrum of source-subtracted CIB with Euclid and WFIRST, and its coherence with unresolved cosmic X-ray background using eROSITA and Athena, II) Advanced searches for microlensing of Galactic stars by the intervening Galactic Halo BHs with OGLE, Gaia, LSST and WFIRST, III) Supernovae (SNe) lensing in the upcoming surveys with WFIRST, LSST and also potentially with Euclid and JWST, IV) Advanced theoretical work to understand the details of PBH accretion and evolution and their influence on cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies in light of the next generation CMB experiments, V) Better new samples and theoretical understanding involving stability and properties of ultra faint dwarf galaxies, pulsar timing, and cosmological quasar lensing.
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) has become a very useful tool for monitoring Hodgkin's disease patients in the last years. When there is suspicion of disease persistence after treatment, this ...technique makes it possible to evaluate treatment activity of the residual lesions observed in the CT scan. Furthermore, due to the whole body study, new tumor sites, which very often change the therapeutic option, can be detected. We must take into account, however, that 18F-FDG is a very sensitive but not very specific tumor marker, since some inflammatory or infectious conditions may be associated to significant radiopharmaceutical uptakes. Thus, in order to increase specificity it is mandatory to correlate the PET information with the rest of the conventional imaging and clinical data and evolution of the patient. We present the case of a woman with Hodgkin's disease in which 18F-FDG PET was included in the follow-up. Both conditions, tumor and infection, were present in different times of the course. The integration of all the x-ray, clinical, laboratory and metabolic information allowed for a better and correct management of this patient.
The entire LHCb experiment is under the supervision of the experiment control system (ECS). The ECS deals with the configuration, operation and monitoring of all the run time related tasks (DAQ, DCS, ...trigger, timing, etc). The same framework toolkit is used throughout the ECS, turning it into a homogeneous control system. This framework (based on a commercial SCADA) is being developed for the four LHC experiments. The ECS is organized in a hierarchical, tree-like structure. Every online component in the experiment is integrated into a logical tree of nodes, which are modeled as finite state machines (FSM). The use of FSM allows the automation and sequencing of actions, as well as error recovery procedures. Due to the partitioning features, also provided by the FSM, the various sub-detectors can run in stand-alone using different instances of the ECS user interface. The aim of this paper is to present the architecture and the tools that allowed us to build a control system which fully integrates all parts of the experiment.
