This paper establishes the chemical nature of Pd nanoparticles protected by alkanethiolates that were prepared through a ligand place-exchange approach and the two-phase method, first developed for ...Au nanoparticles by Brust and Schiffrin. After 10 years since the first study on this kind of Pd nanoparticles was published, the surface composition of the particles is a matter of debate in the literature and it has not been unambiguously assessed. The nanoparticles were studied by means of several techniques: UV–visible spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, extended X-ray absorption fine structure, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The experimental data, obtained for the 3 nm diameter Pd particles, prepared by both synthetic routes, are consistent with nanoparticles composed by Pd(0) cores surrounded by a submonolayer of sulfide species, which are protected by alkanethiolates. Also, we unambiguously demonstrate that the chemical nature of these particles is very similar to that experimentally found for alkanethiolate-modified bulk Pd. The results from this paper are important not only for handling thiolate-protected Pd nanoparticles in catalysis and sensing, but also for the basic comprehension of metallic nanoparticles and the relation of their surface structure with the synthesis method.
There is controversy as to whether the risk of relevant infection in IBD is related to immunosuppressants or the disease itself. The aims of this study were to evaluate: 1 the life-long prevalence ...and types of relevant infections in patients with IBD related to immunosuppressive treatment, and 2 the relationship of both infection and patient comorbidity to mortality.
Observational multicentre retrospective study of IBD patients that presented a relevant infection. For each case, four periods of infection exposure were analysed: P1: pre-IBD diagnosis, P2: from IBD diagnosis to immunosuppressant initiation, P3: during immunosuppressant therapy, and P4: after treatment withdrawal.
The life-long prevalence of relevant infection in the total cohort of patients 6914 was 3%, and 5% in immunosuppressed patients 4202. 366 relevant infections were found in 212 patients P1: 9, P2: 17, P3: 334, and P4: 6. Differences between periods were significant p < 0.0001. The most frequent types of infection were respiratory, intestinal and urinary. The most frequent opportunistic infections were tuberculosis prevalence: 2.6/1000 and herpes zoster prevalence: 3.9/1000. Herpes zoster infection was associated with thiopurines alone or in combination with anti-TNF in 75% of the cases, whereas tuberculosis was associated with anti-TNF in 94% of patients. The overall mortality was 4.2%. Infection-related mortality was 2.8% and it was not influenced by comorbidity.
Relevant infections in IBD patients are rare and appear to be related to immunosuppression. Relevant infection is a major cause of death in IBD.
During university studies of nursing, it is important to develop emotional skills for their impact on academic performance and the quality of patient care. Thermography is a technology that could be ...applied during nursing training to evaluate emotional skills. The objective is to evaluate the effect of thermography as the tool for monitoring and improving emotional skills in student nurses through a case study. The student was subjected to different emotions. The stimuli applied were video and music. The process consisted of measuring the facial temperatures during each emotion and stimulus in three phases: acclimatization, stimulus, and response. Thermographic data acquisition was performed with an FLIR E6 camera. The analysis was complemented with the environmental data (temperature and humidity). With the video stimulus, the start and final forehead temperature from testing phases, showed a different behavior between the positive (joy: 34.5 °C-34.5 °C) and negative (anger: 36.1 °C-35.1 °C) emotions during the acclimatization phase, different from the increase experienced in the stimulus (joy: 34.7 °C-35.0 °C and anger: 35.0 °C-35.0 °C) and response phases (joy: 35.0 °C-35.0 °C and anger: 34.8 °C-35.0 °C). With the music stimulus, the emotions showed different patterns in each phase (joy: 34.2 °C-33.9 °C-33.4 °C and anger: 33.8 °C-33.4 °C-33.8 °C). Whenever the subject is exposed to a stimulus, there is a thermal bodily response. All of the facial areas follow a common thermal pattern in response to the stimulus, with the exception of the nose. Thermography is a technique suitable for the stimulation practices in emotional skills, given that it is non-invasive, it is quantifiable, and easy to access.

This contribution proves that neutral re-balancing mechanisms, that do not alter the likelihood ratio, and training discriminative machines using Bregman divergences as surrogate costs are necessary and sufficient conditions to estimate the likelihood ratio of imbalanced binary classification problems in a consistent manner. These two conditions permit the estimation of the theoretical Neyman–Pearson operating characteristic corresponding to the problem under study. In practice, a classifier operates at a certain working point corresponding to, for example, a given false positive rate. This perspective allows the introduction of an additional principled procedure to improve classification performance by means of a second design step in which more weight is assigned to the appropriate training samples. The paper includes a number of examples that demonstrate the performance capabilities of the methods presented, and concludes with a discussion of relevant research directions and open problems in the area.
Schizophrenia (SZ) is a pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder that entails social and cognitive deficits, including marked language problems. Its complex multifactorial etiopathogenesis, including ...genetic and environmental factors, is still widely uncertain. SZ incidence has always been high and quite stable in human populations, across time and regardless of cultural implications, for unclear reasons. It has been hypothesized that SZ pathophysiology may involve the biological components that changed during the recent human evolutionary history, and led to our distinctive mode of cognition, which includes language skills. In this paper we explore this hypothesis, focusing on the self-domestication of the human species. This has been claimed to account for many human-specific distinctive traits, including aspects of our behavior and cognition, and to favor the emergence of complex languages through cultural evolution. The "domestication syndrome" in mammals comprises the constellation of traits exhibited by domesticated strains, seemingly resulting from the hypofunction of the neural crest. It is our intention to show that people with SZ exhibit more marked domesticated traits at the morphological, physiological, and behavioral levels. We also show that genes involved in domestication and neural crest development and function comprise nearly 20% of SZ candidates, most of which exhibit altered expression profiles in the brain of SZ patients, specifically in areas involved in language processing. Based on these observations, we conclude that SZ may represent an abnormal ontogenetic itinerary for the human faculty of language, resulting, at least in part, from changes in genes important for the domestication syndrome and primarily involving the neural crest.

“Intervention support and treatment” programs are most likely to have been designed for the substances consumed by men, and to cater for men’s needs, with little regard to the specific needs ...of women. Gender-based violence (GBV) has become a key area for addressing the treatment of drug addiction from a gender perspective. In this mapping review covering 32 articles, we examine the strategies used to address gender-based violence in drug addiction treatments that include women. The main topics of analysis were as follows: characteristics of drug addiction treatment, conceptualization of GBV, measurement and approach of GBV in treatment for drug addiction, and effects on health associated with GBV and drug addiction. Only 18.75% of the studies on GBV addressed the area of psycho-social care in the treatment of drug addiction. To avoid inequalities in the healthcare offered, gender-sensitive research and interventions are required which include GBV in the treatment of drug addiction.
Abstract
Background
Anti–tumor necrosis factor agents (anti-TNFs) are efficacious at preventing the postoperative recurrence (POR) of Crohn disease, as demonstrated in 2 randomized controlled trials. ...However, real-life data for infliximab or adalimumab in this setting are scarce. Our aim was to assess both the efficiency of anti-TNFs at preventing early POR of Crohn disease in clinical practice and the associated risk factors for POR.
Methods
Patients in whom anti-TNFs were prescribed for the prevention of POR within 3 months after ileocolonic resection and who had an endoscopic assessment within 18 months were identified from the ENEIDA registry. Clinical and endoscopic features were collected within 18 months after surgery.
Results
In total, 152 patients were included (55 treated with infliximab, 97 with adalimumab, and 39% with concomitant immunosuppressants). Anti-TNF treatment was started after a median time of 29 days (IQR 13–44) after surgery. Eighty-two percent of patients had at least one risk factor for POR, and 82% had been exposed to anti-TNFs before the index surgery. Overall, 34% had endoscopic POR (as defined using a Rutgeerts endoscopic score > i1); 14% had advanced endoscopic POR (>i2); and 20% had clinical POR, with no differences between infliximab and adalimumab. In the multivariate analysis, only perianal disease (odds ratio 2.73, 95% confidence interval CI 1.26–5.91) and rectal involvement (odds ratio 2.79, 95% CI 1.09–7.14) were independent predictors of endoscopic POR.
Conclusions
In clinical practice, anti-TNFs for the prevention of POR of Crohn disease are frequently used in patients experienced with anti-TNFs and with concomitant immunosuppressants. The efficacy of infliximab and adalimumab for POR prevention is similar and in accordance with the results obtained in randomized controlled trials.

Background: The value of the phase angle (PhA), measured via bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), could be considered a good marker of the cell mass and the cell damage of a patient; however, ...there are new techniques, such as muscle ultrasonography, that allow the quantity and quality of muscle to be assessed in a minimally invasive way. The aim of this study is to determine the prognostic value of morphofunctional techniques in the prognosis of mortality in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Methods: This multicenter, cross-sectional study included 86 patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis with a mean age of 71 years, 82.7% of whom were male. The nutritional risk of the patients was assessed by means of questionnaires, such as the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA), and non-invasive functional techniques, including BIA, nutritional ultrasound, and hand grip strength (HGS). Statistical analysis of the sample was performed using JAMOVI version 2.3.22. Results: Correlations were made between the RF-CSA techniques with PhA (r = 0.48, p < 0.001), BCM (r = 0.70, p < 0.001), SMI (r = 0.64, p < 0.001), and HGS (r = 0.54, p < 0.001). The cut-off points for 12-month mortality were PhA = 4.5° (AUC = 0.722, sensitivity of 72.7% and specificity of 66.6%), BCM = 28.8 kg (AUC = 0.609, sensitivity of 32.4% and specificity of 100.0%), RF-CSA = 3.00 cm2 (AUC = 0.857, sensitivity of 64.4% and specificity of 100.0%), 6MMW = 420 m (AUC = 0.830, sensitivity of 63.27% and specificity of 100.0%), and TUG = 7.2 s (AUC = 0.771, sensitivity of 100.0% and specificity of 56.67%). In addition, a multivariate analysis was performed with RF-CSA, HR = 8.11 (1.39–47.16, p = 0.020), and PhA of 6.35 (1.29–31.15, p = 0.023), taking into account age, sex, and BMI to determine mortality. Finally, a Kaplan–Meier survival analysis was conducted with low or normal values for classical parameters (GAP and T6MM) and new parameters (PhA, BCM, RF-CSA, and TUG). Conclusion: RF-CSA and PhA were shown to be good prognostic markers of 12-month mortality and could, therefore, be useful screening tools to complement the nutritional assessment of IPF patients.
