This article proposes a very specific approach to music, defined as a cultural, material or symbolic tool that intermeshes with certain people’s life experience. From that standpoint, music may be ...seen as one of the essential keys for interpreting a biography. The theoretical argument, described from a cultural and mediational perspective, is exemplified in the relationship established between musician and instrument. The singular value of each interpreter’s personal and non-transferable encounter with musical mediators is addressed, and the possible interweave between musicians’ technical and actual life horizons explored. The significance proposed refers to the specific ways in which music may translate world experience and model affect. The objective is to establish the relevance or possibility of expanding or nuancing the view of music as the outer representation of inner emotions through the conceit vitality affects, a term that stresses the dynamic and temporal dimensions of the emotive meaning of music.
Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is an aggressive type of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) predominant in the upper aerodigestive tract. To our knowledge, only one case of that tumor has been ...previously described in the parotid gland. Shadow (ghost) cell differentiation (SCD) is a specialized form of keratinization characteristic of pilomatricoma, and other skin tumors with follicular differentiation. SCD has also been described infrequently in some visceral carcinomas and rarely in the minor salivary glands. Recently, an SCC with prominent SCD has been reported in the parotid. We report for the first time the case of parotid BSCC with prominent SCD in an 87-year-old man. He was admitted due to the appearance in the last few months of a mass, painful on palpation, in the left parotid region. Imaging studies and tru-cut biopsies indicated the need for surgical removal. A left superficial parotidectomy, including the branch of the cervicofacial nerve, was performed. The BSCC showed predominance (62%) of SCD. Immunohistochemically, the basaloid cells were positive for
β
-catenin, pan-cytokeratin (pan-CK) AE1/AE3, CK19, high-molecular-weight CK (HMWCK), p63, p40, and cluster of differentiation 10 (CD10) in a diffuse pattern. No signs of recurrence or metastasis were observed four months after surgery. The main differential diagnoses include nuclear protein in testis (NUT) carcinoma, adamantinoma-like Ewing sarcoma, embryonal carcinoma, and basal cell adenocarcinoma of the solid type. SCD in BSCC of the parotid should be recognized to avoid misdiagnosis, especially in small samples. Although rare, BSCC with SCD should be added to the list of tumors that may originate in the parotid gland.
We studied short- and long-term effects of intravitreal injection of
-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) on melanopsin-containing (m
) and non-melanopsin-containing (Brn3a
) retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). In ...adult SD-rats, the left eye received a single intravitreal injection of 5µL of 100nM NMDA. At 3 and 15 months, retinal thickness was measured in vivo using Spectral Domain-Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT). Ex vivo analyses were done at 3, 7, or 14 days or 15 months after damage. Whole-mounted retinas were immunolabelled for brain-specific homeobox/POU domain protein 3A (Brn3a) and melanopsin (m), the total number of Brn3a
RGCs and m
RGCs were quantified, and their topography represented. In control retinas, the mean total numbers of Brn3a
RGCs and m
RGCs were 78,903 ± 3572 and 2358 ± 144 (mean ± SD;
= 10), respectively. In the NMDA injected retinas, Brn3a
RGCs numbers diminished to 49%, 28%, 24%, and 19%, at 3, 7, 14 days, and 15 months, respectively. There was no further loss between 7 days and 15 months. The number of immunoidentified m
RGCs decreased significantly at 3 days, recovered between 3 and 7 days, and were back to normal thereafter. OCT measurements revealed a significant thinning of the left retinas at 3 and 15 months. Intravitreal injections of NMDA induced within a week a rapid loss of 72% of Brn3a
RGCs, a transient downregulation of melanopsin expression (but not m
RGC death), and a thinning of the inner retinal layers.

It is not well known if sex differences in the use and results of aortic valve replacement (AVR) are changing. The aim of the study is to assess the time trends in the differences by sex in the ...utilisation of AVR procedures in hospitals and in the community.
Retrospective observational analysis using data from the Spanish National Hospitalizations Administrative Database. All hospitalisations between 2016 and 2021 with a main diagnosis of aortic stenosis (ICD-10 codes: I35.0 and I35.2) were included. Time trends in hospitalisation, AVRs and hospital outcomes were analysed. Crude utilisation and population-standardised rates were calculated.
During the study period, 64 384 hospitalisations in 55 983 patients (55.5% men) with 36 915 (65,9%) AVR were recorded. Of these, 15 563 (42.2%) were transcatheter and 21 432 (58.0%) surgical. At hospital level, transcatheter procedures were more frequently performed in women (32.3% vs 24.2%, p < 0.001) and surgical in men (42.9% vs. 32.5%, p < 0.001) but at the population level, surgical and transcatheter aortic valve replacements were used more frequently in men (12.6 surgical and 8.0 transcatheter per 100 000 population) vs women (6.4 and 5.8, respectively; p < 0.001 for both comparisons). Transcatheter procedures shifted from 17.3% in 2016 to 38.0% in 2021, overtaking surgical procedures in 2018 for women and 2021 for men.
TAVR has displaced SAVR as the most frequent AVR procedure in Spain by 2020. This occurred earlier in women, who despite the greater weight of their age group in the older population, receive fewer AVRs, both SAVR and TAVR.
To identify the presence of environmental factors linked to the onset of allergies and asthma in the homes of children participating in an early detection program that were identified with ...sensitivity to common allergens in the region of Sonora, Mexico.
A walkthrough assessment was carried out in the homes of sensitized children; the research tools were the questionnaire and environmental checklist proposed by the Lowell Healthy Homes Program of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.
The results showed the presence of environmental allergen sources, to which most of the children in the study are sensitized, as well as the environmental conditions and habits that determine the quality of the indoor air of the households, were both related to triggering allergies and asthma in this population. A statistically significant association was found between the visual observation of dust inside homes and the sensitivity of children to dust mites.
Dust found inside the home was the most relevant environmental factor related to positive cases of IgE in children. Early detection of allergies in children in the study and the methodology used in this investigation provided a useful framework for the design of plans and intervention alternatives in these homes to prevent the development of allergies and asthma panorama. These plans should be designed with a multidisciplinary approach to impact social, environmental and economic benefits in the family, improving the living conditions of the study population and contributing to the sustainable development goals of the United Nations for 2030.
Hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) is an increasingly popular alternative to conventional HPLC for drug analysis. It offers increased selectivity and sensitivity, and improved efficiency ...when quantifying drugs and related compounds in complex matrices such as biological and environmental samples, pharmaceutical formulations, food, and animal feed. In this review we summarize HILIC methods recently developed for drug analysis (2006–2011). In addition, a list of important applications is provided, including experimental conditions and a brief summary of results. The references provide a comprehensive overview of current HILIC applications in drug analysis.
