This brief essay presents, in the light of textual material, some of the strategies and procedures implemented by individual translators to bring the best-known work by Ivan Cankar, Hlapec Jernej in ...njegova pravica (1907), to the Italian reading public. The three versions available to date cover the period ranging from 1925 to 1978 and bear witness to the interest this story has aroused at home and abroad since its publication, but at the same time a more detailed analysis of the texts only serves to highlight how the efforts by Italian translators, albeit creditable, do not render full justice to a short story that has a special place in the literary and cultural history of Slovenia.
This volume, organised in thirty-two essays written by thirty-five among the most successful Italian scholars in the field of Slavic Studies, offers an extensive overview of the studies which have ...been conducted in Italy on Slavic literature, philology, linguistics, history and culture in recent years. Overall, the work highlights the great variety of paths and lines of research which shaped Italian Slavic Studies, and which are still being used for this field. This volume shows several realities of the Slavic countries in their multifaceted relations with other European cultures, and is addressed to researchers focusing only on Slavic Studies as well as to specialists from other fields who are interested in further investigating topics related to the close net of relationships between the Slavic world and the rest of Europe in the past and present.

Despite being recognised as an exponent of Slovenian culture, the polymath Johann Weichard Valvasor has to date been undervalued in terms of his direct contribution to the aesthetic and literary ...consciousness of his homeland. He has been considered above all as a source of material for the works of others, while studies of broader scope underlining his original contribution in the sphere of Carniolan narrative, albeit in German, are still lacking. The present study, based on an attentive reading of the four volumes that compose his principal work, Die Ehre dess Hertzogthums Crain, seeks to identify all the passages that can be considered narrative units, numbering them progressively, cataloguing them by type and providing a brief summary of each. The corpus thus obtained – recorded in the appendix – has been described and appraised. Finally, individual narrative units have been compared with stories or popular songs of analogous content. The work is concluded by an evaluation of Valvasor's narrative gifts, setting the writer in a new light within the cultural and literary history of Slovenia.
Come gli Sloveni anche gli Italiani, tra i quali all'interno dell'Impero Austro-Ungarico iniziarono sempre più a prendere piede impulsi irredentisti, come ben spiega la curatrice nel saggio ...introduttivo all'opera (pp. 9-40). La comune sudditanza all'imperatore austriaco - sotto la cui egida Trieste, da sempre crocevia di diverse culture, si trovava da mezzo millennio - non portò tuttavia in quest'area a una reciproca solidarietà tra le due componenti principali della città, appunto l'italiana e la slovena, ma al contrario si assiste negli ultimi decenni dell'Ottocento a una crescente diffidenza, soprattutto da parte della maggioritaria etnia italiana nei confronti della minoritaria slovena, ormai in rapida ascesa. Per lui, uomo dell'interno che a Trieste era giunto per adempiere agli obblighi militari per il Kaiser, la città sul golfo è soprattutto il mare, gli orizzonti aperti: E allora ha riso il mare vasto, e allora ha riso la brezza leggera. Se raggiungerà un buon numero di lettori italiani, quest'opera, di gradevole lettura, darà senz'altro un validissimo contributo alla conoscenza di quell'altra anima di Trieste, sia informando su eventi che in Italia sono ignoti ai più, sia rendendo partecipi del modo in cui queste realtà sono state vissute da altri esseri umani, al di là di quella frontiera che ancora oggi suscita talora inquietudine.
