Increased rates of obesity among youth in the last several decades also have led to the emergence of several health problems. Insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome are direct outcomes of ...increasing obesity rates, which, in turn, lead to the emergence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in youth. Nurses are well positioned to intervene with individual youth and populations at risk to interrupt the cascade of events that lead from obesity to severe health problems.
Sediments from seven lakes in West Greenland were used as natural archives to study past and present levels of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls, tri- to decachlorinated), tetra-BDE #47 ...(2,2‘,4,4‘-bromodiphenyl ether), chlordane (cis- and trans-octachlordane) and HxCBz (hexachlorobenzene). The concentrations found are lower than or comparable to concentrations found in sediments from other Arctic regions and one to 2 orders of magnitude lower than concentrations typically found in sediments at lower latitudes. The observed temporal trends (direct and indirect dating) show a decreasing total PCB concentration. Even though local contamination sources exist, the POP deposition in the studied area is most likely a result from long-range transport. The hypothesis about ”cold condensation” suggests a latitudinal fractionation to occur between different volatile compounds during the transport toward the pole. In this study a time delay in the deposition for the low-chlorinated PCBs (tri- and tetrachlorinated), compared to their emission histories and compared to higher chlorinated PCBs, was indicated. Although very low tetra-BDE #47 concentrations are observed in this study, there are indications for an increasing concentration in recent sediment layers that may reflect increasing environmental concentrations at lower latitudes. The investigated pesticides are still in use at lower latitudes, however neither chlordane nor HxCBz show any distinct temporal trend of increasing or decreasing concentration toward the sediment surface.
One-third of the US population is obese, and childhood obesity has tripled since the late 1970s. Childhood obesity is a significant health issue requiring interventions on individual, interpersonal, ...community, organizational, and policy levels. Community coalitions offer successful strategies for engaging community partners with health improvement goals.
In 2008, Yakima County, an agricultural community in eastern Washington, was ranked the eighth fattest city in the United States. Recognizing the obesity problem, the Yakima Health District (YHD) established 2 objectives: to decrease rates of childhood obesity in Yakima County and to recruit and establish a community coalition of key stakeholders and experts to help address the problem.
The YHD spearheaded a movement to create a community coalition. The coalition applied for and received state and federal grants. In September 2008, the YHD held the first recruitment event for Rev It Up!, its community-based effort to address the obesity problem in Yakima. YHD invited the Washington State Department of Health to advise the coalition-building and action-planning process.
The community coalition achieved 5 of 7 objectives, including developing a common vision, creating an advisory committee, and conducting a community inventory, prioritization process, and action plan. However, unexpected public health challenges in the YHD delayed coalition efforts.
Creating the Rev It Up! coalition met a community need and engaged community partners. Some potential partners were dissuaded by the 6-month period required to establish the coalition. Rev It Up! continues as a community effort to reduce rates of obesity in Yakima County.
Abstract Increasing rates of obesity among children ages 12 to 19 years have led to recommendations to alter the school food environment. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are ...associations between an altered school food environment and food choices of middle school students both in and outside of school. In a midsized western city, two of six middle schools allowed only bottled water in vending machines, only milk and fruit on à la carte menus, and offered a seasonal fruit and vegetable bar. Three years after the intervention was initiated, seventh- and eighth-grade students attending the two intervention schools and four control middle schools were surveyed about their food choices. A total of 2,292 surveys were completed. Self-reported frequency of consumption for nine food groups in the survey was low; consumption was higher outside than in school. Boys consumed more milk than girls although girls consumed more fruits and vegetables. Significant socioeconomic differences existed. Compared with students who paid the full lunch fee, students qualifying for free and reduced-price meals consumed more milk and juice in schools but less outside school; more candy and energy drinks in school; and more sweet drinks, candy, pastries, and energy drinks outside school. Students in intervention schools were 24% more likely to consume milk outside school, 27% less likely to consume juice in school, and 56% less likely to consume sweet pastries in school. There were no differences in fruit and vegetable consumption reported by children in control and intervention schools. Overall, there was a positive association between a modified school food environment and student food behavior in and outside school. Policies related to the school food environment are an important strategy to address the obesity epidemic in our country.
Tree rings, if validated as an environmental archive for pollution, would provide a convenient, geographically widespread archive for studying the temporal and spatial distribution of atmospheric ...pollutants. We collected tree- ring records from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), ranging in age from 100 to 300 years and from one spruce (Picea abies), from sites in southern and northern Sweden and analyzed their stable lead isotopic composition ( super(206)Pb/ super(207)Pb). These results are compared to the Pb isotopic composition in soil profiles from each of the sites and temporal changes in the super(206)Pb/ super(207)Pb ratio in peat and lake sediment deposits in Sweden. The mineral soils at each site are characterized by high super(206)Pb/ super(207)Pb ratios (>1.35), while the ratios in the mor layer are low (1.14-1.16) and characterized by atmospheric lead pollution. The super(206)Pb/ super(207)Pb ratios of the tree rings, typically approximately 1.18-1.20, indicate a significant (10-30%) contribution of Pb derived from the underlying mineral soil. While peat and lake sediment records show that the super(206)Pb/ super(207)Pb ratio of atmospheric deposition has varied over time, with a pronounced trough between approximately 1930 and 1990, the tree rings show no similar trend. Further comparison of published Pb isotope data from other tree-ring records with time series from peat bogs and herbarium samples also shows poor agreement, and indicates that tree rings always contain a mixture of pollution Pb and Pb from the underlying mineral soil. The majority of Pb in the wood is derived from atmospheric pollution either directly, through aerial interception, or indirectly, through uptake from the large pool of accumulated pollution Pb in the soil. Since the Pb isotope ratios of the wood indicate that some natural Pb is taken up into the tree, then it must also be concluded that some fraction of the pollution Pb in the wood is likewise taken up from the forest soil. Based on the Pb isotope analyses, we can only conclude that dendrochemical records are not useful in temporal studies of metal pollution.
Lake Mälaren is the water supply and recreation area for more than 1 million people in central Sweden and subject to considerable environmental concern. To establish background data for assessments ...of contemporary levels of trophy and heavy metal pollution, sediment cores from the lake were analyzed. Diatom–inferred lake–water phosphorus concentrations suggest that pre-20th century nutrient levels in Södra Björkfjärden, a basin in the eastern part of Mälaren, were higher (c. 10–20 µg TP L−1) than previously assumed (c. 6 µg TP L−1). Stable lead isotope and lead concentration analyses from 3 basins (S. Björkfjärden, Gisselfjärden and Asköfjärden) show that the lake was polluted in the 19th century and earlier from extensive metal production and processing in the catchment, particularly in the Bergslagen region. The lake has experienced a substantial improvement of the lead pollution situation in the 20th century following closure of the mining and metal industry. The lead pollution from the old mining industry was large compared to late-20th century pollution from car emissions, burning of fossil fuels and modern industries.
Acid rain has caused extensive surface water acidification in Sweden since the mid-20(th) century. Sulfur emissions from fossil-fuel burning and metal production were the main sources of acid ...deposition. In the public consciousness acid deposition is strongly associated with the industrial period, in particular the last 50 years. However, studies of lake-water pH development and atmospheric pollution, based on analyses of lake sediment deposits, have shown the importance of a long-term perspective. Here, we present a conceptual argument, using the sediment record, that large-scale atmospheric acid deposition has impacted the environment since at least Medieval times. Sulfur sources were the pre-industrial mining and metal industries that produced silver, lead and other metals from sulfide ores. This early excess sulfur deposition in southern Sweden did not cause surface water acidification; on the contrary, it contributed to alkalization, i.e. increased pH and productivity of the lakes. Suggested mechanisms are that the excess sulfur caused enhanced cation exchange in catchment soils, and that it altered iron-phosphorus cycling in the lakes, which released phosphorus and increased lake productivity
Using analyses of lead concentrations, lead isotopes (206Pb/207Pb), and spheroidal carbonaceous flyash particles (SCP), we studied sediment accumulation patterns in the acidified lake Harsvatten in ...southwest Sweden. After determining the natural background206Pb/207Pb ratio (1.5) in deeper sediments in long sediment cores from three basins in the lake, we applied an isotope mixing model to quantify pollution Pb accumulation in 46 gravity cores. The mean pollution Pb inventory in the cores was 2.6 g m-2(range, 0.3-11 g m-2). Although some variation in Pb concentrations can be explained by loss on ignition (LOI) and water depth (together, R2
adj= 0.33), there is no relationship between pollution Pb inventories and these variables. Contrary to the traditional model of sediment focusing, where higher accumulations of pollutants are expected in deeper waters, the highest inventories for pollution Pb and SCP are generally found at shallow sites ($<$4 m water depth) and not in the three deep basins of the lake (10, 12, and 24 m deep). Furthermore, the model for sediment focusing, which may be appropriate for describing the physical building of sediments in a lake basin, may be inappropriate for describing the specific processes controlling the distribution of pollutants in a lake basin of this type.
