A photographic method of diet evaluation was compared with a weighed record recording method in seventeen subjects. All subjects found the method easy and acceptable though one subject failed to use ...the method correctly. For the others the two methods gave very similar results, the difference for no nutrient was statistically significant.
Five ampouled preparations of interleukin-4 (IL-4) have been evaluated by 36 laboratories in 14 countries for their suitability to serve as an international standard for this material in a joint ...international collaborative study for interleukin-3 (IL-3) and IL-4. The preparations were assayed in a wide range of in vitro bioassays and immunoassays. It is clear from the study that different recombinant preparations of IL-4 can have very different biological specific activities, including those from the same source (i.e.,
E. coli). In addition, immunoassay estimates of IL-4 levels did not correlate with those of bioassays, illustrating the fact that immunoassays do not necessarily measure biologically active cytokine. It is of interest that the estimates provided by the different bioassays were less variable than those produced by the immunoassays, suggesting that bioassays can be as accurate, if not more so, than immunoassays. The large reduction in the variability of estimates with the inclusion of a single reference preparation clearly illustrates the need for a single standard to assay IL-4. On the basis of the results reported here, with the agreement of the participants of the study and with the authorisation of the Expert Committee on Biological Standardization (ECBS) of the World Health Organization (WHO) the preparation of IL-4 (

We report the onset of a large amplitude, statistically significant periodicity (~46 d) in the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer/All Sky Monitor (RXTE/ASM) data of the prototype X-ray burster 4U 1636-53, ...the X-ray flux of which has been gradually declining over the last 4 yr. This behaviour is remarkably similar to that observed in the neutron star low mass X-ray binary (LMXB), KS 1731-260, which is a long-term transient. We also report on an INTEGRAL/IBIS observation of 4U 1636-53 during its decline phase, and find that the hard X-ray flux (20–100 keV) indicates an apparent anticorrelation with soft X-rays (2–12 keV). We argue that 4U 1636-53 is transiting from activity to quiescence, as occurred in KS 1731-260. We also suggest that the variability during the X-ray decline is the result of an accretion rate variability related to the X-ray irradiation of the disc.
Standard commercial diode detectors over-respond within small radiation fields, an effect largely attributable to the relatively high mass-density of silicon. However, Monte Carlo studies can be used ...to optimise dosimeter designs and have demonstrated that 'mass-density compensation'-for example, introducing a low-density air-gap upstream of a diode's high-density silicon volume-can substantially improve instrument response. In this work we used egs_chamber Monte Carlo simulations to predict the ideal air-gap thickness for a PTW 60017 unshielded diode detector. We then developed a prototype instrument incorporating that air-gap and, for a 6 MV linac, tested it experimentally against EBT3 film. We also tested a further three prototypes with different air-gap thicknesses. Our results demonstrate that for a 10 × 10 cm2 reference field the DiodeAir, a PTW 60017 diode with a built-in air-gap of 1 mm, has on-axis correction factors near unity. Laterally the DiodeAir performs very well off-axis and reports FWHM and penumbra values consistent with those measured using EBT3. For PDD measurement, the performance of the DiodeAir matches that of the original PTW 60017. The experimental focus of this work was 6 MV but we also simulated the on-axis response of the DiodeAir within 15 MV beams and found that our modification proved robust to this substantial increase in beam energy. However, the original diode 60017 does exhibit low energy scatter dependencies and may over-respond to high linac dose-rates such that applying the mass-density compensation method to an alternative instrument (particularly a diamond detector) could ultimately take us even closer to the small-field ideal.
The average mass composition of cosmic rays with primary energies between 10(17) and 10(18) eV has been studied using a hybrid detector consisting of the High Resolution Fly's Eye (HiRes) prototype ...and the MIA muon array. Measurements have been made of the change in the depth of shower maximum and the muon density as a function of energy. The results show that the composition is changing from a heavy to lighter mix as the energy increases.
The mammalian protein MBD4 contains a methyl-CpG binding domain and can enzymatically remove thymine (T) or uracil (U) from a mismatched CpG site in vitro. These properties suggest that MBD4 might ...function in vivo to minimize the mutability of 5-methylcytosine by removing its deamination product from DNA. We tested this hypothesis by analyzing Mbd4-/-mice and found that the frequency of of C → T transitions at CpG sites was increased by a factor of three. On a cancer-susceptible ApcMin/+background, Mbd4-/-mice showed accelerated tumor formation with CpG → TpG mutations in the Apc gene. Thus MBD4 suppresses CpG mutability and tumorigenesis in vivo.
A one-dimensional (1-D) electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) resonator antenna, with both high gain and wide radiation bandwidth, is described. The use of dual resonators in combination with an array of ...sources leads to a dramatic increase in the radiation bandwidth of the antenna. The effect of the dual resonators is to increase the bandwidth over which the EBG material acts as a spatial filter, while the array feed increases both the directivity and radiation bandwidth. Theoretical results for a prototype designed to operate at Ku-band are presented and shown to be in good agreement with measured results. The effect of increasing the number of array elements on directivity and radiation bandwidth is examined, and the improvements of the proposed configuration compared with a classical 1-D EBG resonator antenna with single source is presented.
