The subspecies of Morpho (Iphimedeia) amphitryon Staudinger, 1887, and of M. (Iph.) telemachus (Linnaeus, 1758) in Bolivia and Southern Peru (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae, Morphinae).
M. amphitryon ...amphitryon Staudinger, 1887, from Central Peru, and the Bolivian subspecies M. amphitryon susarion Fruhstorfer, 1912, are compared : they show no obvious differences. On the contrary, the individual form Morpho amphitryon form azurita Fruhstorfer, 1913, from Cuzco Department, Southern Peru, presents original characteristics, allowing the creation of a new subspecies, the geographical location of which, between M. a. amphitryon and M. a. susarion, justifies the taxonomic separation of susarion. The altitudinal distribution of M. amphitryon and of the closely related M. telemachus is discussed. In Bolivia, there is an altitudinal succession, M. t. foucheri – M. t. exsusarion – M. a. susarion, from lowlands up to around 1800 m. In Cuzco Department (Southern Peru), M. t. exsusarion doesn’t exist and, very probably, there is a direct succession M. t. foucheri – M. a. azurita. It should be the same situation in Central Peru, with a M. t. foucheri – M. a. amphitryon succession.
La comparaison de M. amphitryon amphitryon Staudinger, 1887, du Pérou central, et de la sous-espèce bolivienne M. amphitryon susarion Fruhstorfer, 1912, montre que ces deux taxons sont très peu différents. En revanche, la forme individuelle Morpho amphitryon forme azurita Fruhstorfer, 1913, (département Cuzco, Pérou méridional) présente des caractères originaux qui justifient de créer une nouvelle sous-espèce. Sa position géographique, entre M. a. amphitryon et M. a. susarion, conduit à admettre que M. a. susarion forme une entité distincte de M. a. amphitryon. La répartition altitudinale de M. amphitryon et de l’espèce voisine M. telemachus est ensuite discutée. En Bolivie, on observe, de la plaine jusque vers 1800 m, la succession M. t. foucheri – M. t. exsusarion – M. a. susarion. Au Pérou, dans le département de Cuzco, M. t. exsusarion n’existe pas et, selon toute vraisemblance, M. a. azurita succède directement à M. t. foucheri en altitude ; le même type de situation existerait dans le Pérou central, avec une succession M. t. foucheri – M. a. amphitryon.

Although the genus Morpho Fabricius, 1807, is an important component of the international butterfly trade, it is still poorly understood phylogenetically. The first phylogenetic analysis of the ...genus, based on morphological characters, was published in 2002, and its results contested the monophyly of three of the nine recognized subgenera, and suggested abandoning the subgeneric classification altogether. The present study re-evaluates the characters used previously, and adds new data derived from the microstructure of the wing scales. In contrast to previous studies, eight of the nine subgenera were recovered as monophyletic. M. absoloni was confirmed to be closely related to M. aurora within subgenus Balachowskyna. Subgenus Cytheritis was found to comprise two widely separated monophyletic groups centered on M. portis and M. marcus. The latter is described as a new subgenus. However, the evolutionary relationships among the subgenera remain poorly supported, except for two clades each composed of two subgenera : (Morpho, Pessonia) and (Iphimedeia, Laurschwartzia). We then use this new phylogeny to gain further understanding of the evolution of the famous blue wing coloration of certain Morpho species. In particular, we demonstrate that not all blue Morpho are blue in the same way.
Quoique les espèces du genre Morpho Fabricius, 1807, soient très recherchées par les collectionneurs et activement commercialisées, ce genre reste très mal connu sur le plan phylogénétique. La première analyse phylogénétique basée sur des caractères morphologiques a été publiée en 2002. Ses résultats contestent la monophylie de trois des neuf sous-genres reconnus et suggérent d’abandonner l’ensemble de la classification subgénérique. La présente étude reprend l’analyse des caractères utilisés et en aborde de nouveaux concernant la microstructure des écailles alaires. Contrairement à la précédente analyse, ce nouveau travail montre que huit des neuf sous-genres sont monophylétiques. Morpho absoloni est confirmé comme étant proche parent de M. aurora dans le sous-genre Balachowskyna. Le sous-genre Cytheritis est révélé comme formé de deux groupes bien séparés centrés sur Morpho portis and M. marcus. Ce dernier est décrit comme un nouveau sous-genre. Cependant les relations évolutives entre les différents sous-genres sont peu soutenues, excepté pour deux clades, chacun composé de deux sous-genres : (Morpho, Pessonia) et (Iphimedeia, Laurschwartzia).
Nous avons donc utilisé cette nouvelle phylogénie pour obtenir une meilleure compréhension de l’évolution de la fameuse coloration bleue des ailes de certaines espèces de Morpho. En particulier, nous démontrons que tous les Morpho bleus ne le sont pas de la même façon.

Le décret présidentiel du 11 mars 1878 décide la création, à Besançon, d’un « Observatoire astronomique, météorologique et chronométrique ». S’il répond aux attentes de la faculté des sciences pour ...l’astronomie et du conseil général du Doubs pour la partie météorologique, la chronométrie est l’élément décisif de ce décret, et celui qui fonde l’originalité de l’établissement. En effet, devenue dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle la capitale française pour la fabrication des montres, Besançon doit alors faire face à la concurrence des Suisses – et des Américains –, qui disposent depuis longtemps de deux observatoires chronométriques leur permettant de jauger la qualité de leur production. Les bâtiments sont construits en 1883 et 1884 et le service de chronométrie fonctionne à partir du 5 août 1885. L’observatoire peut alors, d’une part, « fabriquer du temps » et le distribuer en ville, d’autre part, primer – à partir de 1888 – les fabricants lauréats de son concours chronométrique et favoriser leur formation en liaison avec l’École d’horlogerie, créée en 1862.

A previous study performed using steady state fluorescence has revealed the existence of residual structures surrounding the two tryptophan residues in an unfolded form of yeast phosphoglycerate ...kinase Garcia, P., et al. (1995) Biochemistry 34, 397−404. In this paper, we present a more detailed characterization of these residual structures, through the study of two single tryptophan-containing mutants of yPGK, W333F and W308Y. Denaturation experiments have first been performed at low temperatures to assess the nature of the interactions stabilizing these residual structures. On the other hand, the compactness and dynamics of the protein matrix were probed using tryptophan fluorescence quenching by acrylamide at various denaturant concentrations. Taking into consideration the changes in sample viscosity induced by addition of guanidinium chloride made feasible the use of this technique during the denaturation process. These different approaches have shown that the residual structures around tryptophan 308 are mainly stabilized by hydrophobic interactions and are more compact and less fluctuant than the ones surrounding tryptophan 333. Native and denatured yPGK have also been studied by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. In the native protein, tryptophan buried in the core, W333, is mainly associated with a lifetime close to 0.1 ns, whereas tryptophan that is partially accessible to the solvent, W308, has a lifetime close to 0.5 ns. The time-resolved tryptophan fluorescence emission of wild-type yPGK can be accounted for quantitatively by the summed emissions of its two single tryptophan mutants. The significance of minor long lifetime components is discussed for the two tryptophan residues. This new assignment of fluorescent decay times has allowed for the detection of a folding intermediate in which the environment of tryptophan 333 is modified for denaturant concentrations lower than those for tryptophan 308.
The holism-reductionism debate, one of the classic subjects of study in the philosopy of science, is currently at the heart of epistemological concerns in ecology. Yet the division between holism and ...reductionism does not always stand out clearly in this field. In particular, almost all work in ecosystem ecology and landscape ecology presents itself as holistic and emergentist. Nonetheless, the operational approaches used rely on conventional reductionist methodology. From an emergentist epistemological perspective, a set of general 'transactional' principles inspired by the work of J. Dewey and J.K. Feibleman are proposed in an effort to develop a coherent ontological and methodological semantics.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
