Secondary metabolites produced by endophytes are an excellent source of biologically active compounds. The newly isolated natural products terezine E and 14-hydroxyterezine D are endophytic ...metabolites exhibiting anticancer activity recently identified by our team (https://doi.org/10.1080/14786419.2018.1489393). In our current study, we evaluated their affinity for binding to the active site of histone deacetylase (PDB ID: 4CBT) and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (PDB ID: 4H3X) by molecular docking using AutoDock Vina software after having tested their cytotoxic activities on three cell lines (human ductal breast epithelial tumor cells (T47D)-HCC1937), human hepatocarcinoma cell line (HepG2)-HB8065), and human colorectal carcinoma cells (HCT-116)-TCP1006, purchased from ATCC, USA)). Additionally, their antimicrobial activities were investigated, and their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were determined against P. notatum and S. aureus by the broth microdilution method. Higher cytotoxicity was observed for terezine E against all tested cell lines compared to 14-hydroxyterezine D. Molecular docking results supported the high cytotoxicity of terezine E and showed higher binding affinity with 4CBT with an energy score of 9 kcal/mol. Terezine E showed higher antibacterial and antifungal activities than 14-hydroxyrerezine D: MIC values were 15.45 and 21.73 µg/mL against S. aureus and 8.61 and 11.54 µg/mL against P. notatum, respectively.
Li-ion hybrid supercapacitors (LiHSCs) have emerged as an extremely attractive energy storage system by combining the prime advantages of Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors. As a common electrode ...material in both lithium ion batteries and supercapacitors, graphene and activated carbons offer a tunable porous structure with high chemical, thermal and physical stability, which in turn results in excellent electronic conductivity and improved capacity as compared with the other electrodes. Elemental nitrogen doping in graphene and activated carbons is believed to further improve their performance. In this review, the state of the art of hybrid supercapacitors is briefly summarized with an emphasis on the use of graphene and activated carbons. Subsequent doping of graphene and activated carbons with nitrogen in LiHSCs is also emphasized.

Patients with haematological disorders have previously been considered to have poor outcomes following admission to intensive care units. Although a number of haematology centres from outside the UK ...have now demonstrated improved outcomes, the continuing perception of poor outcomes in this patient group continues to adversely affect their chances of being admitted to some intensive care units (ICUs). Over the past 10 years, there have been many advances within the disciplines of both haematology and intensive care medicine. This study was done to assess outcomes and the impact of an early warning scoring system (EWS) and early involvement of ICU outreach teams. One hundred five haematology patients (haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) or non-HSCT) had 114 admissions to ICU between April 2006 and August 2008 which coincided with hospital-wide implementation of EWS. The survival to ICU discharge was 56 (53%). Thirty-three (33%) patients were alive at 6 months giving a 1-year survival of 31%. Of the 39 HSCT patients, nine were post-autologous and 30 post-allogeneic transplant. The survival to ICU discharge was 22 (56%) with 14 (36%) patients alive at 6 months. One year survival was 36%. Prior to the introduction of EWS and critical care outreach team (2004), survival to ICU discharge was 44% which has increased to 53% (2006-2008). This is despite an increase in mechanical ventilation in 2006-2008 (50%) as compared to 2004 (32%).The improvement in ICU survivorship was even more prominent in HSCT patients (37% in 2004 versus 56% in 2006-2008). There was a trend towards decreasing Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation scores with time, suggesting appropriate patients being identified earlier and having timely escalation of their treatment.

The Central Outer Tracker is a large cylindrical drift chamber constructed to replace Collider Detector at Fermilab's original central drift chamber for the higher luminosity expected for Run 2 at ...the Fermilab Tevatron. The chamber's drift properties are described in the context of meeting the operating requirements for Run 2. The design and construction of the chamber, the front-end readout electronics, and the high-voltage system are described in detail. Wire aging considerations are also discussed.
The field of particulate reinforced titanium matrix composites (TMCs) has seen significant progress and breakthroughs over the last two decades. Among the particulate reinforced TMCs, Ti/TiB ...composites have been studied and well adopted in the industry. Despite many advantages, Ti/TiB composites, however, do not possess high wear resistance. Contrary to Ti/TiB composites, incorporation of Si3N4 into the Ti matrix can significantly increase the wear resistance. This study makes use of both reinforcements (Ti/TiB composite as core material and Ti/Si3N4 as shell material) to produce a high strength, high wear-resistant hybrid composite system. The resultant composites were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. The results revealed complete decomposition of Si3N4 reinforcement and the formation of needle-shaped TiB whiskers, indicating that in situ reaction occurred during the vacuum sintering of the powder compacts. All the composite samples had a high sintered density. The hardness of the composites increased with an increase in the mass fraction of Si3N4. Tensile strength and tribological properties were determined and found to be dependent on the mass fraction of the reinforcements, respectively. The results show that by combining the two reinforcements, composite with a high-strength core and a high wear-resistant surface can be realized.
•In situ titanium composites were successfully fabricated for potential core-shell applications•Dense composites were developed via press and sinter route•An increased weight fraction of Si3N4 beyond 1 wt% result in excellent wear resistance
We describe 20 patients with myeloma and 1 with primary amyloidosis from 15 centres, all with advanced renal failure, most of whom had PBSC mobilised using plerixafor following previous failed ...mobilisation by conventional means (plerixafor used up-front for 4 patients). For 15 patients, the plerixafor dose was reduced to 0.16 mg/kg/day, with a subsequent dose increase in one case to 0.24 mg/kg/day. The remaining six patients received a standard plerixafor dosage at 0.24 mg/kg/day. Scheduling of plerixafor and apheresis around dialysis was generally straightforward. Following plerixafor administration, all patients underwent apheresis. A median CD34+ cell dose of 4.6 × 10(6) per kg was achieved after 1 (n=7), 2 (n=10), 3 (n=3) or 4 (n=1) aphereses. Only one patient failed to achieve a sufficient cell dose for transplant: she subsequently underwent delayed re-mobilisation using G-CSF with plerixafor 0.24 mg/kg/day, resulting in a CD34+ cell dose of 2.12 × 10(6)/kg. Sixteen patients experienced no plerixafor toxicities; five had mild-to-moderate gastrointestinal symptoms that did not prevent apheresis. Fifteen patients have progressed to autologous transplant, of whom 12 remain alive without disease progression. Two patients recovered endogenous renal function post autograft, and a third underwent successful renal transplantation. Plerixafor is highly effective in mobilising PBSC in this difficult patient group.
IntroductionAllogeneic stem cell transplant has curative potential for many hematological disorders. Building an allogeneic hematopoietic progenitor cell transplant (HPCT) unit requires huge ...investment, infrastructure, equipment, medical supplies, and training of health care professionals. The key objective of this study is to share our experience of developing an allogeneic HPCT service at our tertiary care cancer hospital in a low-middle-income country. In addition, this study presents the outcomes of the first 30 allogeneic HPCTs done at our center.MethodsThis retrospective observational study included adult patients 18 years old or older with hematological malignancies who underwent allogeneic HPCT between July 2019 and April 2023 at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre.ResultOf the 30 patients, 24 underwent matched sibling donor (MSD) transplants in which a myeloablative-conditioning regimen (MAC) was used in 19, and a reduced conditioning regimen (RIC) was used in one. Of the six haploidentical-related donor transplants, four received MAC, and two received RIC. The median recipient age at HPCT was 23 and 21 years for MSD and Haplo-related donor transplants, respectively. The median follow-up duration was 12 months (Range: 10 days - 33 months). The overall survival rate at one year was 71.3% among all allogeneic stem cell transplant patients, whereas the disease-free survival rate at one year was 63.7%. In the acute lymphoblastic leukemia group, the disease-free survival rate at one year post allograft was 51.5%, while in the acute myeloid leukemia group, it was 78.7%.ConclusionThis study demonstrates the successful development of an allogeneic bone marrow transplant unit at our hospital despite significant financial constraints. This has allowed us to provide a potentially curative and life-saving treatment to a substantial number of cancer patients. The bone marrow transplant outcomes of this study are comparable to those reported by international bone marrow transplant registries.
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) during pregnancy necessitates treatment with high-dose chemotherapy, which can threaten the lives of both the mother and fetus. The aim of the treatment not only ...focuses on selecting and administering optimal chemotherapy with appropriate doses to the mother but also reflects the crucial understanding of the fetal gestational age at the time of administration of chemotherapy to minimize fetal exposure. We describe the case of a 19-year-old patient diagnosed with ALL at 29 weeks gestation. She received treatment in the third trimester with the Berlin-Frankfurt-Munster (BFM) 2000 induction chemotherapy protocol consisting of a combination of daunorubicin, vincristine, pegaspargase, prednisolone, and intrathecal (IT) methotrexate and gave birth to a healthy baby girl via vaginal delivery four weeks after initiating the induction of chemotherapy.
