In operation, it shows a ratiometric scale factor of 1.6 Hz/Hz, and a white noise of 8 mdps/√Hz, both independent of process nonuniformities.
Lymphocytosis is the main biomarker predicting the efficacy of subcutaneous IL-2 anticancer immunotherapy. In addition, it has been demonstrated the fundamental role of dendritic cells (DC) in the ...generation of an effective anticancer immunity. However, the relation between IL-2 and DC system needs to be further understood. This preliminary study was performed in an attempt to analyze changes in circulating DC during IL-2 cancer immunotherapy in relation to lymphocyte variations and clinical efficacy of treatment. The study included 20 metastatic renal cell cancer patients, who underwent subcutaneous low-dose IL-2 immunotherapy (6.000.000 IU/day for 6 days/week for 4 weeks). To evaluate DC, venous blood samples were collected before and after 2 weeks of IL-2 injections, corresponding to the period of maximum lymphocytosis. Immature (CD123

) DC were measured by FACS and monoclonal antibodies. IL-2 induced a significant increase in the mean number of circulating mature DC, whereas no substantial change occurred in immature DC mean number. The increase in mature DC was associated with a control of disease, whereas no rise was observed in patients who had progressed on IL-2 immunotherapy. Moreover, the increase in mature DC mean number was significantly higher in patients showing evident lymphocytosis, with lymphocyte enhancement greater than 1000 cells/mmc, than in patients with less pronounced lymphocytosis, even though no significant correlation was seen in between mature DC and lymphocyte increase. This preliminary study would suggest that IL-2 may stimulate DC system and that the clinical anticancer efficacy of IL-2 is associated with the increase in circulating mature DC, which could be considered as a new favourable biomarker during IL-2 immunotherapy.

Adult neurogenesis is a feature that is phylogenetically highly conserved, yet most of the current knowledge in this field is based on laboratory rodents. In addition to the differences among ...vertebrates, remarkable peculiarities are also emerging in the location and structural and functional features of neurogenic systems in mammals. Although the orders Lagomorpha and Rodentia are quite similar, unexpected features of structural plasticity and neurogenesis have been found to occur in the rabbit central nervous system. The structural and temporal characteristics of protracted and persistent neurogenesis in rabbits are herewith addressed. Attention is focused on the subventricular zone cytoarchitecture and extensions, as well as on processes of persistent neurogenesis that have been recently demonstrated to occur in the striatum and in the cerebellum. The existence of neural cell progenitors persisting within the rabbit brain parenchyma (so-called nonneurogenic in rodents) are discussed.
Introduction: Necrobiosis lipoidica (NL) is a rare chronic granulomatous dermatitis that usually appears in the lower extremities. It affects about 0.3-1.2% of diabetic patients, the majority of whom ...have type 1 diabetes. The etiology and pathogenesis of this disorder are still unclear. NL is characterized by skin rash that usually affects the shins. The average onset is 30 years, with females being affected more commonly. There are very few reported cases of necrobiosis lipoidica in children.
Case report: We report a case of a 16 year old girl affected by type 1 diabetes mellitus (15 years disease duration) who developed an erythematous nodular rash on the lower extremities and interscapular area. In the suspect of necrobiosis lipoidica, a skin biopsy was performed (lower extremities and interscapular area). The microscopic evaluation of the pretibial lesions was suggestive of necrobiosis lipoidica. The smaller lesions in the interscapular area showed signs of perivascular dermatitis which could be consistent with early stages of necrobiosis lipoidica. Local treatment with tacrolimus determined a progressive improvement of the lesions.
Conclusion: In patients with T1DM, diagnosis of NL of the lower legs is usually unequivocal. However, diagnosis may be more challenging in the presence of lesions with recent onset and/or atypical clinical presentation and unusual site. In these cases, NL must always be taken in consideration in order to avoid misdiagnosis, wrong/late treatment decisions, and progression to ulceration.
In this work we have demonstrated the influence of a short chain fatty acid (acetate) on the number of enterochromaffin (EC) cells containing serotonin (5HT), at two different pH (pH 6.9 absorptive ...stimuli, and pH 2.9 secretory stimuli), infused into the colon during one hour. The number of EC cells decrease significatively, specially in the cecum with a solution of low pH (2.9). The action of piprenzepine in preventing this reduction demonstrated that was partly mediated by a cholinergic receptor mechanism. On the other hand, a decrease on the release of 5HT to the lumen was a observed under the influence of pirenzepine. We conclude that the short chain fatty acid acetate, at a low pH induces the release of serotonin through a cholinergic mechanisms indicated by the inhibition observed with antimuscarinic drug.
10 cases of thyroid medullary carcinoma (TMC) have been studied ultrastructurally and histochemically. Well differentiated calcitonin-producing C cells were present in all tumours, being prevalent in ...9 cases. 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5HT) storing cells were found in two cases, somatostatin immunoreactive cells in at least 5 cases and ACTH-immunoreactive cells in 4 cases. Ultrastructurally, at least 3 types of apparently non-C cells were observed. Type 1 cells with large, poorly osmiophilic granules resembling those of gastroenteropancreatic D cells, were present in 6 cases; they appeared to correlate well with somatostatin immunoreactive cells. Type 2 cells with large osmiophilic granules were found in 5 cases; they resembled ACTH-MSH cells of the human pituitary and may correspond to the ACTH-immunoreactive cells of light microscopy. Type 3 cells with small granules and an unknown function were found in 6 cases, always in scarce number. It is concluded that TMC, although mainly made up of C cells, usually contains large proportions of other endocrine cell types.
