BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The duration of soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in agricultural soils varies according to soil management, land-use history and soil and climate conditions. Despite ...several experiments have reported SOC sequestration with the adoption of no-tillage (NT) in Mediterranean dryland agroecosystems scarce information exists about the duration and magnitude of the sequestration process. For this reason, 20 years ago we established in northeast Spain a NT chronosequence experiment to evaluate SOC sequestration duration under Mediterranean dryland conditions. METHODS: In July 2010 we sampled five chronosequence phases with different years under NT (i.e., 1, 4, 11, and 20 years) and a continuous conventional tillage (CT) field, in which management prevailed unchanged during decades. Soil samples were taken at four depths: 0–5, 5–10, 10–20 and 20–30 cm. The SOC stocks were calculated from the SOC concentration and soil bulk density. Furthermore, we applied the Century ecosystem model to the different stages of the chronosequence to better understand the factors controlling SOC sequestration with NT adoption. RESULTS: Differences in SOC stocks were only found in the upper 5 cm soil layer in which 4, 11 and 20 years under NT showed greater SOC stocks compared with 1 year under NT and the CT phase. Despite no significant differences were found in the total SOC stock (0–30 cm soil layer) there was a noteworthy difference of 5.7 Mg ha⁻¹ between the phase with the longest NT duration and the phase under conventional tillage. The maximum annual SOC sequestration occurred after 5 years of NT adoption with almost 50% change in the annual rate of SOC sequestration. NT sequestered SOC over the 20 years following the change in management. However, more than 75% of the total SOC sequestered was gained during the first 11 years after NT adoption. The Century model predicted reasonably well SOC stocks over the NT chronosequence. CONCLUSIONS: In Mediterranean agroecosystems, despite the continuous use of NT has limited capacity for SOC sequestration, other environmental and agronomic benefits associated to this technique may justify the maintenance of NT over the long-term.
Elastic neutrino scattering on electrons is a precisely known purely leptonic process that provides a standard candle for measuring neutrino flux in conventional neutrino beams. Using a total sample ...of 810 neutrino-electron scatters after background subtraction, the measurement reduces the normalization uncertainty on the ν μ NuMI beam flux between 2 and 20 GeV from 7.6 to 3.9%. This is the most precise measurement of neutrino-electron scattering to date, will reduce uncertainties on MINER ν A's absolute cross section measurements, and demonstrates a technique that can be used in future neutrino beams such as long baseline neutrino facility.
Neutron production in antineutrino interactions can lead to bias in energy reconstruction in neutrino oscillation experiments, but these interactions have rarely been studied. MINERvA previously ...studied neutron production at an average antineutrino energy of ~3 GeV in 2016 and found deficiencies in leading models. In this paper, the MINERvA 6 GeV average antineutrino energy dataset is shown to have similar disagreements. A measurement of the cross section for an antineutrino to produce two or more neutrons and have low visible energy is presented as an experiment-independent way to explore neutron production modeling. This cross section disagrees with several leading models’ predictions. Neutron modeling techniques from nuclear physics are used to quantify neutron detection uncertainties on this result.
The hydrological functioning of wetlands in S Spain is poorly understood. We perform a 22-years hydrological modelling of seven playa-lakes located in a semi-arid region of southern Spain, including ...dry and wet periods. To do that, we applied a hydrological balance model to reconstruct past lake water levels. In addition, we investigated the hydrochemistry of the water, the basin bathymetry, and the geological setting of the watersheds, acquiring new lithology and active structures data. Once the models were constrained, scenarios considering increases on temperature and human management were implemented, and discussed. The water balance is simplified to precipitation (water input) and basin discharge (evapotranspiration), as the lakes are disconnected from groundwater because of the low-permeability substrate. In addition, unlike in previous studies, we add overflows to the modelling. The results of the model agree with actual lake water monitoring data (R2 > 0.8). We observed that the hydroperiods of some of these lakes vary from permanent lakes to ephemeral, depending strongly on the basin bathymetry. Lakes with steeply margins show longer hydroperiods, whilst it is shorter for low-lying floor playa-lakes. In addition, we observed that steeply lake margins respond to active faults and/or lithological changes. To forecast the effects of climate change on the lake hydroperiods, we applied a 1 °C increase in average temperature in our hydrological modelling. The hydroperiod is significantly reduced for ephemeral playa-lakes, whilst is barely affected in permanent lakes. Moreover, we detected the high sensitivity of ephemeral playa-lakes to the anthropogenic management, including siltation, plant colonization and changes watershed surface.

The interaction of engineered nanoparticles with plant tissues is still not well understood. There is a lack of information about the effects of curing (postharvest treatment) and lignin content on ...copper uptake by sweetpotato roots exposed to copper-based nanopesticides. In this study, Beauregard-14 (lower lignin) and Covington (higher lignin) varieties were exposed to CuO nanoparticles (nCuO), bulk CuO (bCuO), and CuCl2 at 0, 25, 75, and 125 mg/L. Cured and uncured roots were submerged into copper suspensions/solutions for 30 min. Subsequently, root segments were sliced for imaging with a 2-photon microscope, while other root portions were severed into periderm, cortex, perimedulla, and medulla. They were individually digested and analyzed for Cu content by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy. Microscopy images showed higher fluorescence in periderm and cortex of roots exposed to nCuO, compared with bCuO. At 25 mg/L, only bCuO showed higher Cu concentration in the periderm and cortex of Beauregard-14 (2049 mg/kg and 76 mg/kg before curing; 6769 mg/kg and 354 mg/kg after curing, respectively) and in cortex of Covington (692 mg/kg before curing and 110 mg/kg after curing) compared with controls (p ≤ 0.05). In medulla, the most internal tissue, only Beauregard-14 exposed to 125 mg bCuO/L showed significantly (p ≤ 0.05) more Cu before curing (17 mg/kg) and after curing (28 mg/kg), compared with control. This research has shown that the 2-photon microscope can be used to determine CuO particles in nondyed plant tissues. The lack of Cu increase in perimedulla and medulla, even in roots exposed to high CuO concentrations (125 mg/L), suggests that nCuO may represent a good alternative to protect and increase the shelf life of sweetpotato roots, without exposing consumers to excess Cu.

. Finally, the tools developed for this analysis and the result presented are substantial advancements in our capabilities to understand the nucleon structure in the weak sector, and also help the current and future neutrino oscillation experiments
to better constrain neutrino interaction models.
Sex differences in the mechanical properties of different musculoskeletal tissues and their impact on tendon function and disease are becoming increasingly recognized. Tendon mechanical properties ...are influenced by the presence or absence of sex hormones and these effects appear to be tendon- or ligament-specific. The objective of this study was to determine how sex and hormone differences in rats affect supraspinatus tendon and muscle properties. We hypothesized that male supraspinatus tendons would have increased cross-sectional area but no differences in tendon material properties or muscle composition when compared to supraspinatus tendons from female or ovariectomized (OVX) female rats. Uninjured supraspinatus tendons and muscles from male, female, and OVX female rats were collected and mechanical and histological properties were determined. Our analysis demonstrated decreased dynamic modulus and increased hysteresis and cross-sectional area in male tendons. We found that male tendons exhibited decreased dynamic modulus (during low strain frequency sweep and high strain fatigue loading), increased hysteresis, and increased cross-sectional area compared to female and OVX female tendons. Despite robust mechanical differences, tendon cell density and shape, and muscle composition remained unchanged between groups. Interestingly, these differences were unique compared to previously reported sex differences in rat Achilles tendons, which further supports the concept that the effect of sex on tendon varies anatomically. These differences may partially provide a mechanistic explanation for the increased rate of acute supraspinatus tendon ruptures seen in young males.
Little information is available on the interaction of CuO nanoparticles (nCuO) with tuberous roots. In this study, Beauregard-14 (B-14, low lignin) and Covington (COV, high lignin) sweetpotato ...varieties were cultivated until maturity in soil amended with nCuO, bulk copper oxide (bCuO) and CuCl2 at 25–125 mg/kg. The Cu treatments had no significant influence on chlorophyll content. Gas exchange parameters were not affected in B-14. In COV, however, at 125 mg/kg treatments, bCuO reduced the intercellular CO2 (11%), while CuCl2 increased it by 7%, compared with control (p ≤ 0.035). At 25 mg/kg nCuO increased the length of COV roots (20.7 ± 2.0 cm vs. 14.6 ± 0.8 cm, p ≤ 0.05). In periderm of B-14, nCuO, at 125 mg/kg, increased Mg by 232%, while the equivalent concentration of CuCl2 reduced P by 410%, compared with control (p ≤ 0.05). The data suggest the potential application of nCuO as nanofertilizer for sweetpotato storage root production.
