We present preliminary asteroseismic results from Kepler on three G-type stars. The observations, made at one-minute cadence during the first 33.5 days of science operations, reveal high ...signal-to-noise solar-like oscillation spectra in all three stars: about 20 modes of oscillation may be clearly distinguished in each star. We discuss the appearance of the oscillation spectra, use the frequencies and frequency separations to provide first results on the radii, masses, and ages of the stars, and comment in the light of these results on prospects for inference on other solar-type stars that Kepler will observe.
Abstract
The Astropy Project supports and fosters the development of open-source and openly developed
Python
packages that provide commonly needed functionality to the astronomical community. A key ...element of the Astropy Project is the core package
astropy
, which serves as the foundation for more specialized projects and packages. In this article, we provide an overview of the organization of the Astropy project and summarize key features in the core package, as of the recent major release, version 2.0. We then describe the project infrastructure designed to facilitate and support development for a broader ecosystem of interoperable packages. We conclude with a future outlook of planned new features and directions for the broader Astropy Project.
Summary
Cervical spine immobilisation can make direct laryngoscopy difficult, which might lead to airway complications. This randomised control trial compared the time to successful intubation using ...either the Macintosh laryngoscope or the McGrath® Series 5 videolaryngoscope in 128 patients who had cervical immobilisation applied. Intubation difficulty score, Cormack & Lehane laryngoscopic view, intubation failures, changes in cardiovascular variables and the incidence of any complications were recorded. The mean (SD) successful intubation time with the Macintosh laryngoscope was significantly shorter compared with the McGrath laryngoscope, 50.0 (32.6) s vs 82.7 (80.0) s, respectively (p = 0.0003), despite the McGrath laryngoscope's having a lower intubation difficulty score and a superior glottic view. There were five McGrath laryngoscope intubation failures, three owing to difficulty in passing the tracheal tube and two to equipment malfunction. Equipment malfunction is a major concern as a reliable intubating device is vital when faced with an airway crisis.
A dose-dense weekly schedule of paclitaxel (resulting in a greater frequency of drug delivery) plus carboplatin every 3 weeks or the addition of bevacizumab to paclitaxel and carboplatin administered ...every 3 weeks has shown efficacy in ovarian cancer. We proposed to determine whether dose-dense weekly paclitaxel and carboplatin would prolong progression-free survival as compared with paclitaxel and carboplatin administered every 3 weeks among patients receiving and those not receiving bevacizumab.
We prospectively stratified patients according to whether they elected to receive bevacizumab and then randomly assigned them to receive either paclitaxel, administered intravenously at a dose of 175 mg per square meter of body-surface area every 3 weeks, plus carboplatin (dose equivalent to an area under the curve AUC of 6) for six cycles or paclitaxel, administered weekly at a dose of 80 mg per square meter, plus carboplatin (AUC, 6) for six cycles. The primary end point was progression-free survival.
A total of 692 patients were enrolled, 84% of whom opted to receive bevacizumab. In the intention-to-treat analysis, weekly paclitaxel was not associated with longer progression-free survival than paclitaxel administered every 3 weeks (14.7 months and 14.0 months, respectively; hazard ratio for disease progression or death, 0.89; 95% confidence interval CI, 0.74 to 1.06; P=0.18). Among patients who did not receive bevacizumab, weekly paclitaxel was associated with progression-free survival that was 3.9 months longer than that observed with paclitaxel administered every 3 weeks (14.2 vs. 10.3 months; hazard ratio, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.40 to 0.95; P=0.03). However, among patients who received bevacizumab, weekly paclitaxel did not significantly prolong progression-free survival, as compared with paclitaxel administered every 3 weeks (14.9 months and 14.7 months, respectively; hazard ratio, 0.99; 95% CI, 0.83 to 1.20; P=0.60). A test for interaction that assessed homogeneity of the treatment effect showed a significant difference between treatment with bevacizumab and without bevacizumab (P=0.047). Patients who received weekly paclitaxel had a higher rate of grade 3 or 4 anemia than did those who received paclitaxel every 3 weeks (36% vs. 16%), as well as a higher rate of grade 2 to 4 sensory neuropathy (26% vs. 18%); however, they had a lower rate of grade 3 or 4 neutropenia (72% vs. 83%).
Overall, weekly paclitaxel, as compared with paclitaxel administered every 3 weeks, did not prolong progression-free survival among patients with ovarian cancer. (Funded by the National Cancer Institute and Genentech; GOG-0262 ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT01167712.).
Due to the large number of videolaryngoscopes now available, it might be difficult for novice users to assess the various devices or use them optimally. We have collated the experiences of several ...airway management experts to assist in the assessment and optimal use of seven commonly used videolaryngoscopes. While all videolaryngoscopes have unique features, they can be broadly divided into those inserted via a midline approach over the tongue and those inserted laterally along the floor of the mouth. Videolaryngoscopes that are placed on the floor of the mouth displace the tongue antero-laterally and flatten the submandibular tissues. They generally require a conventional shaped bougie for tracheal intubation. Videolaryngoscopes that use the midline approach may have an in-built airway conduit for the tracheal tube or may require a 'J-shaped' stylet in the tracheal tube to negotiate the upper airway. This may cause difficulty when the tracheal tube is inserted through the glottis and the tip abuts the anterior wall of the subglottic space. Knowledge of the mechanism used by videolaryngoscopes to achieve laryngoscopy is essential for safe and successful tracheal intubation when using these devices.
We report on the first layered deuterium-tritium (DT) capsule implosions indirectly driven by a "high-foot" laser pulse that were fielded in depleted uranium hohlraums at the National Ignition ...Facility. Recently, high-foot implosions have demonstrated improved resistance to ablation-front Rayleigh-Taylor instability induced mixing of ablator material into the DT hot spot Hurricane et al., Nature (London) 506, 343 (2014). Uranium hohlraums provide a higher albedo and thus an increased drive equivalent to an additional 25 TW laser power at the peak of the drive compared to standard gold hohlraums leading to higher implosion velocity. Additionally, we observe an improved hot-spot shape closer to round which indicates enhanced drive from the waist. In contrast to findings in the National Ignition Campaign, now all of our highest performing experiments have been done in uranium hohlraums and achieved total yields approaching 10^{16} neutrons where more than 50% of the yield was due to additional heating of alpha particles stopping in the DT fuel.
One advantage of using conjugated polymers in semiconductor applications is that they can be processed using techniques well established for conventional polymers. A study found that related ...copolymers can be chemically tuned to provide a range of materials with considerably improved properties for this and other applications.
Abstract
Background
Pulmonary function impairments are more common among people living with HIV (PLWH), as are contributing risk behaviors. To understand the effects of human immunodeficiency virus ...(HIV) infection independent of risk behaviors, pulmonary function was evaluated in lifestyle-comparable HIV-infected and -uninfected AGEhIV cohort participants.
Methods
Prevalence of obstructive lung disease in 544 HIV-infected and 529 HIV-uninfected participants was determined using spirometry. Logistic regression was used to assess HIV as a determinant of obstructive lung disease. Additional explanatory models were constructed to explain observed differences.
Results
The unadjusted obstructive lung disease prevalence was similar in HIV-infected (23.0%) and -uninfected (23.4%) participants. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed an effect modification whereby obstructive lung disease prevalence among persons with limited smoking experience was notably lower among HIV-infected compared with HIV-uninfected participants. This resulted from a lower forced vital capacity (FVC) in HIV-infected participants but similar 1-second forced expiratory volume (FEV1), especially in those with limited smoking experience.
Conclusions
The lower FVC in HIV-infected participants could indicate HIV-related restrictive or fibrotic pulmonary changes. Factors that decrease the FVC could obscure emphysematous changes in the lungs of PLWH when using the FEV1/FVC ratio as single diagnostic measure.
Clinical Trials Registration
NCT01466582.
In the AGEhIV cohort, HIV-infected participants had lower forced vital capacity compared with HIV-uninfected participants, while 1-second forced expiratory volumes were similar. This resulted in fewer HIV-infected participants meeting spirometry-defined criteria for obstructive lung disease.
Recent experiments on the National Ignition Facility M. J. Edwards et al., Phys. Plasmas 20, 070501 (2013) demonstrate that utilizing a near-vacuum hohlraum (low pressure gas-filled) is a viable ...option for high convergence cryogenic deuterium-tritium (DT) layered capsule implosions. This is made possible by using a dense ablator (high-density carbon), which shortens the drive duration needed to achieve high convergence: a measured 40% higher hohlraum efficiency than typical gas-filled hohlraums, which requires less laser energy going into the hohlraum, and an observed better symmetry control than anticipated by standard hydrodynamics simulations. The first series of near-vacuum hohlraum experiments culminated in a 6.8 ns, 1.2 MJ laser pulse driving a 2-shock, high adiabat (α∼3.5) cryogenic DT layered high density carbon capsule. This resulted in one of the best performances so far on the NIF relative to laser energy, with a measured primary neutron yield of 1.8×10(15) neutrons, with 20% calculated alpha heating at convergence ∼27×.
