This article recounts the creation of an oral and public history project, "I'm Still Surviving," which seeks to document, write, and display a women's history of HIV/AIDS in the United States. Using ...feminist oral history and decolonial methods for both the collection and interpretation of oral history narratives, the project grounds and amplifies self-determination by women living with HIV/AIDS as it decenters the notions that academic historians are the experts on the history of the epidemic. The goal of the project is to collaborate with women living with HIV/AIDS so that together we can produce a decolonized public history of women's experiences of surviving HIV/AIDS.
Much recent gay and lesbian political rhetoric and activism focuses on procuring rights for same-sex couples such as the right to marry, leaning toward what historian Lisa Duggan has called ..."homonormativity," rather than radical transformation of the dominant system of inequality.3 The scholarship discussed here lends archival and historical perspective to how the emergence of this individual rights-based activism, including its reliance on "traditional" definitions of marriage, came to be. Each author recasts LGBT history's relationship to political history by moving beyond narratives of social movements to consider how memory matters to a queer historical analysis of both same-and opposite-sex desire.
Similar to most cultural forms today, history is collected, edited, manipulated, stored, displayed, distributed, and otherwise produced through a complex network of post-digital techniques and media. ...It is often produced only by historians. History Moves is a public history project that aims to produce cogent and collective historical experiences within the cultural frame of mutable and highly distributed media forms. It does this by bringing history, design, and historical subjects into conversation to shape public space. The project uses a participatory process that mobilizes people to interpret history by mobilizing digital and analogue media. History Moves transforms historical subjects into history-makers while simultaneously and repeatedly transfiguring media into forms that are engaging and accessible to widely distributed audiences. This article recounts a case study where History Moves worked with a group of women living with HIV/AIDS to present a history of the epidemic and a women’s history of Chicago. We suggest that the example provides a model for how to build participatory digital history projects and collaborative history displays.
"When We're Coming From" is a conversation across time and place among a group of writers and artists who are members of the What Would an HIV Doula Do? Collective. Seven of us have come together to ...have an asynchronous conversation about how our decades-long work to respond to the HIV/AIDS pandemic shapes our experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. Here we share six individual assessments of pandemic time to suggest ways that pandemics(s) shape our sense of time(s). What follows are our meditations on how and when we see ourselves, and the transitions of HIV/AIDS and COVID-19: "AIDS out of time," bent time, "time-is-money," palimpsests, syndemic time, and the long haul.
