This paper identifies the cataclysmic variables that appear in spectra obtained in 2004 as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Spectra of 41 objects, including seven systems that were previously ...known (CC Cnc, DW Cnc, PQ Gem, AR UMa, AN UMa, RX J1131.3+4322, and UMa 6) and 34 new cataclysmic variables are presented. The positions and ugriz photometry of all 41 systems are given, as well as additional follow-up spectroscopic, photometric, and/or polarimetric observations of eight of the new systems. The new objects include three eclipsing systems, six with prominent He II emission, and six systems that show the underlying white dwarf.
We have generated a stable bivalent Fv molecule (dsFv)2 of the anti-erbB2 monoclonal antibody e23 in which the V(H) and V(L) domains of the Fv are linked to each other by a disulfide bond and the two ...Fvs are connected by a 15-amino acid linker (T. K. Bera et al., J. Mol. Biol., 281: 475-483, 1998). The e23 (dsFv)2 molecule is linked to a truncated form of Pseudomonas exotoxin (PE38) to generate a bivalent disulfide-stabilized immunotoxin e23 (dsFv)2-PE38. Compared to the monovalent immunotoxin, the (dsFv)2 immunotoxin showed greatly increased cytotoxicity to four cancer cell lines expressing low levels of erbB2 but not to four other cell lines with high erbB2 expression. e23 (dsFv)2-PE38 was administered i.v. to mice, and its half-life was determined. The t(1/2)alpha and t(1/2)beta were 20 and 325 min, respectively, whereas the corresponding values for the monovalent dsFv immunotoxin were shorter, 6 and 52 min. The antitumor activities of the monovalent and bivalent immunotoxin were compared using mice bearing A431 tumors. Despite the fact that e23 (dsFv)2-PE38 was 13-fold more active than e23 dsFv-PE38 on A431 cells in cell culture, its antitumor activity in mice was <2-fold that of the monovalent immunotoxin. These data show that a large increase in avidity does not always lead to an increase in cytotoxic activity. Furthermore, in one of the cases in which cytotoxic activity in vitro was greatly enhanced, there was only a small increase in antitumor activity.
Excitation spectra of super(11) C are measured in the super(12) C(p,d) reaction near the eta' emission threshold. A proton beam extracted from the synchrotron SIS-18 at GSI with an incident energy of ...2.5 GeV impinges on a carbon target. The momenta of deuterons emitted at 0degrees are precisely measured with the fragment separator (FRS) operated as a spectrometer. In contrast to theoretical predictions on the possible existence of deeply bound eta'-mesic states in carbon nuclei, no distinct structures are observed associated with the formation of bound states. The spectra are analyzed to set stringent constraints on the formation cross section and on the hitherto barely known eta'-nucleus interaction.

An exclusive measurement of the decay η→π+π−γ has been performed at the WASA facility at COSY. The η mesons were produced in the fusion reaction pd→He3 X at a proton beam momentum of 1.7 GeV/c. ...Efficiency corrected differential distributions have been extracted based on 13960±140 events after background subtraction. The measured pion angular distribution is consistent with a relative p-wave of the two-pion system, whereas the measured photon energy spectrum was found at variance with the simplest gauge invariant matrix element of η→π+π−γ. A parameterization of the data can be achieved by the additional inclusion of the empirical pion vector form factor multiplied by a first-order polynomial in the squared invariant mass of the π+π− system.
