We report on the results of a six-month photometric study of the main-belt binary C-type asteroid 121 Hermione, performed during its 2007 opposition. We took advantage of the rare observational ...opportunity afforded by one of the annual equinoxes of Hermione occurring close to its opposition in June 2007. The equinox provides an edge-on aspect for an Earth-based observer, which is well suited to a thorough study of Hermione's physical characteristics. The catalog of observations carried out with small telescopes is presented in this work, together with new adaptive optics (AO) imaging obtained between 2005 and 2008 with the Yepun 8-m VLT telescope and the 10-m Keck telescope. The most striking result is confirmation that Hermione is a bifurcated and elongated body, as suggested by Marchis et al., (2005). A new effective diameter of 187 +/- 6 km was calculated from the combination of AO, photometric and thermal observations. The new diameter is some 10% smaller than the hitherto accepted radiometric diameter based on IRAS data. The reason for the discrepancy is that IRAS viewed the system almost pole-on. New thermal observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope agree with the diameter derived from AO and lightcurve observations. On the basis of the new AO astrometric observations of the small 32-km diameter satellite we have refined the orbit solution and derived a new value of the bulk density of Hermione of 1.4 +0.5/-0.2 g cm-3. We infer a macroscopic porosity of ~33 +5/-20%.
Biochemically adrenarche is characterized by increased production of 5-ene steroids, in particular Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA) and its sulphate (DHA-S). It is still not clear if ACTH is responsible ...for this adrenal steroid production. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of acute and chronic ACTH administration, without dexamethasone pretreatment, on hormonal patterns in 20 patients (5 males aged between 6 8/12 and 7 10/12 years and 15 females aged between 5 9/12 and 7 6/12 years) with idiopathic premature adrenarche. Pregnenolone (5P), DHA, DHA-S, 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP), androstenedione (A), 11-deoxycortisol (S) and cortisol (F) have been determined by Radioimmunoassay. The results of the hormonal evaluation (means +/- standard error) showed high plasma levels of DHA 329.2 +/- 41.7 ng/100 ml (dl) and DHA-S (169.1 +/- 54 micrograms/dl) and slightly increased levels of 5P (74.4 +/- 7.1 ng/dl), of A (45.4 +/- 4.6 ng/dl) and 17-OHP (69.3 +/- 11.3 ng/dl) in comparison to those of controls, thus indicating a decrease in 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity and an increase in 17-20-lyase and 17-hydroxylase activities, characteristic for adrenarche. Acute and chronic ACTH stimulation did not amplify the characteristic basal hormonal pattern, but they induced a shift of adrenal steroid metabolism to 4-ene pathway, suggesting that the basal hormonal pattern in premature adrenarche may be independent or, at least, not exclusively dependent on ACTH control.
In a pilot study aimed to test the therapeutic potential of beta interferon (IFN) given intramuscularly we treated 4 patients with HBeAg positive chronic hepatitis B with a progressively increased ...dosage of beta IFN (from 5 to 9 million units daily) for 1 month and with 9 million units for 5 additional months, thrice weekly. In 3 of the 4 patients, serum HBV-DNA decreased during therapy and remained undetectable in 2 who seroconverted from HBeAg to anti-HBe while in 1 patient viraemia rebounded to pretreatment levels during the follow-up. In the remaining patient serum HBV-DNA fluctuated during treatment. These results suggest that beta IFN given intramuscularly has a potential therapeutic efficacy in patients with chronic hepatitis B and prompt further clinical trials in a larger number of patients.

A sensitive homologous radioimmunoassay (RIA) for human prolactin (hPRL) was evaluated. The experimental parameters of this double antibody solid phase (DASP)-hPRL-RIA are discribed. The RIA measures ...concentrations of hPRL as low as 1 ng/ml of human serum and allows repetitive measurements and accurate delineation of serum hPRL. The assay is specific for hRPL; only HGH shows a weak cross-reaction. The antigen recovery tests are quantitative. The serum concentrations of hPRL in a group of randomly selected male and female individuals averaged 6.7 +/- 3.3 ng/ml, respectively. In a chronobiological study performed on 21 subjects (5 male and 16 female), a statistically significant rhythm with a 24-h period was detected.
