Nuclear shadowing corrections to the structure functions of deep inelastic scattering on intermediate-mass nuclei are calculated at very small values of Bjorken x and small values of Q2 (Q2 ≤ 5 ...GeV2). The two-component approach developed in previous works of authors for a description of the nucleon structure functions of deep inelastic scattering is used. It is shown that the hard component of the nucleon structure functions that arises, in terms of the color dipole model, from qq-pairs with a high transverse momentum, is almost not shadowed. It is shown that a change of the slope of the shadowing curve with a decrease of x depends, at small values of x, on the relative contribution of the hard component to the nucleon structure function (this contribution is a function of x and Q2) and on a size of gluon saturation effects. It is shown that an accounting for saturation effects becomes essential for predictions of shadowing at x < ( 10−5 – 10−4), depending on a value of Q2. Results of numerical calculations of nuclear shadowing for several nuclei are compared with available data of the E665 and the NMC Collaborations.
Investigation of lepton propagation through matter is of importance for cosmic-ray physics and neutrino astronomy. The diffractive scattering of virtual photons is considered as a process that leads ...to the energy loss of leptons emitting these photons. The interference between this process and bremsstrahlung makes a contribution that depends on the sign of the lepton charge.
We present very high energy (VHE) imaging of MGRO J2019+37 obtained with the VERITAS observatory. The bright extended (~2degrees) unidentified Milagro source is located toward the rich star formation ...region Cygnus-X. MGRO J2019+37 is resolved into two VERITAS sources. The faint, point-like source VER J2016+371 overlaps CTB 87, a filled-center remnant (SNR) with no evidence of a supernova remnant shell at the present time. Its spectrum is well fit in the 0.65-10TeV energy range by a power-law model with photon index 2.3 + or - 0.4. VER J2019+378 is a bright extended (~1degrees) source that likely accounts for the bulk of the Milagro emission and is notably coincident with PSR J2021+3651 and the star formation region Sh 2-104. Its spectrum in the range 1-30 TeV is well fit with a power-law model of photon index 1.75 + or - 0.3, among the hardest values measured in the VHE band, comparable to that observed near Vela-X. We explore the unusual spectrum and morphology in the radio and X-ray bands to constrain possible emission mechanisms for this source.
ABSTRACT Between the beginning of its full-scale scientific operations in 2007 and 2012, the VERITAS Cherenkov telescope array observed more than 130 blazars; of these, 26 were detected as ...very-high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) γ-ray sources. In this work, we present the analysis results of a sample of 114 undetected objects. The observations constitute a total live-time of ∼570 hr. The sample includes several unidentified Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) sources (located at high Galactic latitude) as well as all the sources from the second Fermi-LAT catalog that are contained within the field of view of the VERITAS observations. We have also performed optical spectroscopy measurements in order to estimate the redshift of some of these blazars that do not have spectroscopic distance estimates. We present new optical spectra from the Kast instrument on the Shane telescope at the Lick observatory for 18 blazars included in this work, which allowed for the successful measurement or constraint on the redshift of four of them. For each of the blazars included in our sample, we provide the flux upper limit in the VERITAS energy band. We also study the properties of the significance distributions and we present the result of a stacked analysis of the data set, which shows a 4 excess.
A non-contact technique for human heart activity monitoring is proposed. The technique is based on the measurement of the ballistocardiographic signal. The measuring device uses a high-sensitivity ...piezoelectric sensor that traces microscopic body movements. Mathematical methods of broadband acoustic signal processing are used to eliminate the noise caused by high sensitivity of the sensor. The attained quality of cardiac signal measurement is sufficiently high to allow observing the cardiac activity cycles.
We have measured and theoretically analyzed the diffuse scattering in the binary alloy system Au-Ni, which has been proposed as a testing ground for theories of alloy phase stability. We found strong ...evidence that in the alloys Au3Ni and Au3Ni2, fluctuations of both ordering- and clustering-type are competing with each other. Our results resolve a long-standing controversy on the balance of relaxation and mixing energies in this alloy system and explain recent findings of ordering in thin Au-Ni films.
We genotyped Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) from the Bering Sea and North Pacific Ocean for 43 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to investigate seasonal distribution and migration ...patterns. We analyzed 3563 immature fish from 22 spatiotemporal strata; composition analyses were performed using genotype data from spawning stocks spanning the species range. Substantial variation in stock composition existed among spatial and seasonal strata. We inferred patterns of seasonal migration based upon these data along with data from previous tag, scale, and parasite studies. We found that stocks from western Alaska and Yukon River overwinter on the Alaska continental shelf then travel to the middle and western Bering Sea during spring-fall. Stocks from California to Southeast Alaska were distributed in Gulf of Alaska year-round, with a substantial portion of this group migrating northward to the eastern Bering Sea during spring-fall. Proportions of Russian stocks increase when moving east to west in both the Bering Sea and North Pacific Ocean. These data can be used to better understand the impacts of fisheries and climate change on this valuable resource.

We propose search algorithms for paths in graphs that are optimal in the sense of a given choice function. As an example we consider the choice mechanism with respect to a binary relation that does ...not contain numerical criterial estimates.
