Abstract
We present a spectral-variability analysis of the low-redshift quasar PDS 456 using principal component analysis. In the XMM–Newton data, we find a strong peak in the first principal ...component at the energy of the Fe absorption line from the highly blueshifted outflow. This indicates that the absorption feature is more variable than the continuum, and that it is responding to the continuum. We find qualitatively different behaviour in the Suzaku data, which is dominated by changes in the column density of neutral absorption. In this case, we find no evidence of the absorption produced by the highly ionized gas being correlated with this variability. Additionally, we perform simulations of the source variability, and demonstrate that PCA can trivially distinguish between outflow variability correlated, anticorrelated and un-correlated with the continuum flux. Here, the observed anticorrelation between the absorption line equivalent width and the continuum flux may be due to the ionization of the wind responding to the continuum. Finally, we compare our results with those found in the narrow-line Seyfert 1 IRAS 13224–3809. We find that the Fe K UFO feature is sharper and more prominent in PDS 456, but that it lacks the lower energy features from lighter elements found in IRAS 13224–3809, presumably due to differences in ionization.

v2 has an ...added 53 sequence IDs, 106 rows, and three new identified stray light (SL) sources in comparison to the original catalog. The total catalog now has 489 unique sequence IDs, 862 entries, and 83 confirmed

sources. Additionally, we provide new resources for the community to gauge the utility and spectral state of the source in a given observation. We have created long-term light curves for each identified SL source using MAXI and Swift/BAT data when available. Further, source extraction regions for 632 identified SL observations were created and are available to the public. In this paper we present an overview of the updated catalog and new resources for each identified

We present the discovery of eclipses in the X-ray light curves of the X-ray binary Swift J1858.6–0814. From these, we find an orbital period of P= 76841.3(+1.3,−1.4) s (≈21.3 hours) and an eclipse ...duration of t(ec)= 4098(+17,−18) s (≈1.14 hours).We also find several absorption dips during the pre-eclipse phase. From the eclipse duration to orbital period ratio, the inclination of the binary orbit is constrained to i >70◦. The most likely range for the companion mass suggests that the inclination is likely to be closer to this value than 90◦. The eclipses are also consistent with earlier data, in which strong variability (‘flares’) and the long orbital period prevent clear detection of the period or eclipses. We also find that the bright flares occurred preferentially in the post-eclipse phase of the orbit, likely due to increased thickness at the disc-accretion stream interface preventing flares being visible during the pre-eclipse phase. This supports the notion that variable obscuration is responsible for the unusually strong variability in Swift J1858.6–0814.
We present a detailed X-ray spectral and variability study of the full 2018 outburst of MAXI J1727–203 using NICER observations. The outburst lasted approximately four months. Spectral modelling in ...the 0.3–10 keV band shows the presence of both a soft thermal and a hard Comptonised component. The analysis of these components shows that MAXI J1727–203 evolved through the soft, intermediate, and hard spectral states during the outburst. We find that the soft (disc) component was detected throughout almost the entire outburst, with temperatures ranging from ∼0.4 keV, at the moment of maximum luminosity, to ∼0.1 keV near the end of the outburst. The power spectrum in the hard and intermediate states shows broad-band noise up to 20 Hz, with no evidence of quasi-periodic oscillations. We also study the rms spectra of the broad-band noise at 0.3−10 keV of this source. We find that the fractional rms increases with energy in most of the outburst except during the hard state, where the fractional rms remains approximately constant with energy. We also find that, below 3 keV, the fractional rms follows the same trend generally observed at energies >3 keV, a behaviour known from previous studies of black holes and neutron stars. The spectral and timing evolution of MAXI J1727–203, as parametrised by the hardness–intensity, hardness–rms, and rms–intensity diagrams, suggest that the system hosts a black hole, although we could not rule out a neutron star.
ABSTRACT
We present a qualitative search for ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) in excess variance spectra of radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We analyse 42 sources from the spectroscopic UFO ...detection sample, and an additional 22 different sources from the variability sample. A total of 58 sources have sufficient observational data from XMM–Newton EPIC-pn and variability for an excess variance spectrum to be calculated. We examine these spectra for peaks corresponding to variable blue-shifted H- and He-like ion absorption lines from UFOs. We find good evidence for such outflows in 28 per cent of the AGN sample and weak evidence in a further 31 per cent, meaning that ∼30–60 per cent of the AGN sample hosts such UFOs. The mean and median blue-shifted velocity is found to be ∼0.14c and 0.12c, respectively. Current variability methods allow for a fast, model-independent determination of UFOs; however, further work needs to be undertaken to better characterize the statistical significance of the peaks in these spectra by more rigorous modelling. Detecting good evidence for variable UFO lines in a large number of sources also lays the groundwork for detailed analysis of the variability time-scales of the absorbers. This will allow us to probe their densities and hence distances from the central supermassive black hole.

The X-ray spectra of some active galactic nuclei (AGNs) show a soft X-ray excess, emission in excess to the extrapolated primary X-ray continuum below 2 keV. Recent studies have shown that ...this soft excess can be described well as originating from either a relativistic ionized reflection, the extreme blurring of the reprocessed emission from the innermost region of the accretion disc, or Comptonization from an optically thick and warm region called the ‘warm corona’, in which electron scattering is the dominant source of opacity. To constrain the origin of the soft excess in the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 926, we carry out a multi-epoch X-ray spectral study using observations from Suzaku (2009), XMM–Newton and NuSTAR (2016), and NuSTAR and Swift-XRT (2021). The broad-band X-ray spectra of Mrk 926 contains a thermally Comptonized primary continuum, a variable soft excess, and distant reflection. We find that in Mrk 926 as in so many sources, it is difficult to make a definite statement as to what is causing the observed soft excess. A warm coronal-like component is slightly preferred by the data but a reflection origin is also possible. Using archival radio data, we detect an optically thin radio component in our broad-band study of Mrk 926. While this component is consistent with an optically thin radio jet, future multiwavelength observations including high spatial resolution radio observations at multiple frequencies are required to probe the origin of the radio emission in more detail.

Swift J1858.6-0814 is a transient neutron star X-ray binary discovered in 2018 October. Multiwavelength follow-up observations across the electromagnetic spectrum revealed many interesting ...properties, such as erratic flaring on minute time-scales and evidence for wind outflows at both X-ray and optical wavelengths, strong and variable local absorption, and an anomalously hard X-ray spectrum. Here, we report on a detailed radio observing campaign consisting of one observation at 5.5/9 GHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, and nine observations at 4.5/7.5 GHz with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. A radio counterpart with a flat to inverted radio spectrum is detected in all observations, consistent with a compact jet being launched from the system. Swift J1858.6-0814 is highly variable at radio wavelengths in most observations, showing significant variability when imaged on 3-to-5-min time-scales and changing up to factors of 8 within 20 min. The periods of brightest radio emission are not associated with steep radio spectra, implying they do not originate from the launching of discrete ejecta. We find that the radio variability is similarly unlikely to have a geometric origin, be due to scintillation, or be causally related to the observed X-ray flaring. Instead, we find that it is consistent with being driven by variations in the accretion flow propagating down the compact jet. We compare the radio properties of SwiftJ1858.6-0814 with those of Eddington-limited X-ray binaries with similar X-ray and optical characteristics, but fail to find a match in radio variability, spectrum, and luminosity.
ABSTRACT
The evolution of accreting X-ray binary systems is closely coupled to the properties of their donor stars. Consequently, we can constrain the evolutionary track a system is by establishing ...the nature of its donor. Here, we present far-ultraviolet (far-UV) spectroscopy of the transient neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary J1858 in different accretion states (low-hard, high-hard, and soft). All of these spectra exhibit anomalous N v, C iv, Si iv, and He ii lines, suggesting that its donor star has undergone CNO processing. We also determine the donor’s effective temperature, Td ≃ 5700 K, and radius, Rd ≃ 1.7 R⊙, based on photometric observations obtained during quiescence. Lastly, we leverage the transient nature of the system to set an upper limit of $\dot{M}_{\rm acc} \lesssim 10^{-8.5}~{\rm M}_{\odot }~\mathrm{ yr}^{-1}$ on the present-day mass-transfer rate. Combining these with the orbital period of the system, Porb = 21.3 h, we search for viable evolution paths. The initial donor masses in the allowed solutions span the range 1 M⊙ ≲ Md,i ≲ 3.5 M⊙. All but the lowest masses in this range are consistent with the strong CNO-processing signature in the UV line ratios. The present-day donor mass in the permitted tracks are 0.5 M⊙ ≲ Md,obs ≲ 1.3 M⊙, higher than suggested by eclipse modelling. Since Porb is close to the so-called bifurcation period, both converging and diverging binary tracks are permitted. If the former is confirmed, J1858 will end its life as an ultracompact system with a substellar donor.
Abstract
Due to the structure of the NuSTAR telescope, photons at a large off axis (>1°) can reach the detectors directly (stray light), without passing through the instrument optics. At these ...off-axis angles NuSTAR essentially turns into a collimated instrument and the spectrum can extend to energies above the Pt K edge (79 keV) of the multilayers, which limits the effective area bandpass of the optics. We present the first scientific spectral analysis beyond 79 keV using a Cygnus X-1 observation in

the catalog of stray light observations. This serendipitous stray light observation occurred simultaneously with an INTEGRAL observation. When the spectra are modeled together in the 30–120 keV energy band, we find that the NuSTAR stray light flux is well calibrated and constrained to be consistent with the INTEGRAL flux at the 90% confidence level. Furthermore, we explain how to treat the background of the stray light spectral analysis, which is especially important at high energies.
