ABSTRACT
We observed the Galactic black hole X-ray binary V4641 Sgr with the high resolution transmission gratings on Chandra during the source’s 2020 outburst. Over two epochs of Chandra gratings ...observations, we see numerous highly ionized metal lines, superimposed on a hot, disc-dominated X-ray continuum. The measured inner disc temperatures and luminosities imply an unfeasibly small inner disc radius, such that we suggest that the central engine of V4641 Sgr is obscured, and we are viewing scattered X-rays. We find that the emission lines in the Chandra spectra cannot be constrained by a single photoionized model, instead finding that two separate photoionized model components are required, one to reproduce the iron lines and a second for the other metals. We compare the observed X-ray spectra of V4641 Sgr to optical studies during previous outbursts of the source, suggesting that the lines originate in an accretion disc wind, potentially with a spherical geometry.

We find soft X-ray emission lines from the X-ray binary Swift J1858.6–0814 in data from XMM–NewtonReflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS): N vii, O vii, and O viii, as well as notable ...residuals short of a detection at Ne ix and other higher ionization transitions. These could be associated with the disc atmosphere, as in accretion disc corona sources, or with a wind, as has been detected in Swift J1858.6–0814 in emission lines at optical wavelengths. Indeed, the N vii line is redshifted, consistent with being the emitting component of a P-Cygni profile. We find that the emitting plasma has an ionization parameter log (ξ) = 1.35 ± 0.2 and a density n > 1.5 × 1011 cm−3. From this, we infer that the emitting plasma must be within 1013 cm of the ionizing source, ∼5 × 107 rg for a 1.4 M⊙ neutron star, and from the line width that it is at least 104 rg away 2 × 109(M/1.4 M⊙) cm. We compare this with known classes of emission-line regions in other X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei.

We report the discovery of the unusually bright long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB), GRB 221009A, as observed by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift), Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image, ...and Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer Mission. This energetic GRB was located relatively nearby (
z
= 0.151), allowing for sustained observations of the afterglow. The large X-ray luminosity and low Galactic latitude (
b
= 4.°3) make GRB 221009A a powerful probe of dust in the Milky Way. Using echo tomography, we map the line-of-sight dust distribution and find evidence for significant column densities at large distances (≳10 kpc). We present analysis of the light curves and spectra at X-ray and UV–optical wavelengths, and find that the X-ray afterglow of GRB 221009A is more than an order of magnitude brighter at
T

+ 4.5 ks than that from any previous GRB observed by Swift. In its rest frame, GRB 221009A is at the high end of the afterglow luminosity distribution, but not uniquely so. In a simulation of randomly generated bursts, only 1 in 10

long GRBs were as energetic as GRB 221009A; such a large
E
γ
,iso
implies a narrow jet structure, but the afterglow light curve is inconsistent with simple top-hat jet models. Using the sample of Swift GRBs with redshifts, we estimate that GRBs as energetic and nearby as GRB 221009A occur at a rate of ≲1 per 1000 yr—making this a truly remarkable opportunity unlikely to be repeated in our lifetime.
Abstract We present the discovery, with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), that SRGA J144459.2−604207 is a 447.9 Hz accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP), which underwent a 4 ...week long outburst starting on 2024 February 15. The AMXP resides in a 5.22 hr binary, orbiting a low-mass companion donor with M d > 0.1 M ⊙ . We report on the temporal and spectral properties from NICER observations during the early days of the outburst, from 2024 February 21 through 2024 February 23, during which NICER also detected a type I X-ray burst that exhibited a plateau lasting ∼6 s. The spectra of the persistent emission were well described by an absorbed thermal blackbody and power-law model, with blackbody temperature kT ≈ 0.9 keV and power-law photon index Γ ≈ 1.9. Time-resolved burst spectroscopy confirmed the thermonuclear nature of the burst, where an additional blackbody component reached a maximum temperature of nearly kT ≈ 3 keV at the peak of the burst. We discuss the nature of the companion as well as the type I X-ray burst.

The evolution of accreting X-ray binary systems is closely coupled to the properties of their donor stars. Consequently, we can constrain the evolutionary track a system is by establishing ...the nature of its donor. Here, we present far-ultraviolet (far-UV) spectroscopy of the transient neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary J1858 in different accretion states (low-hard, high-hard, and soft). All of these spectra exhibit anomalous N v, C iv, Si iv, and He ii lines, suggesting that its donor star has undergone CNO processing. We also determine the donor’s effective temperature, Td ≃ 5700 K, and radius, Rd ≃ 1.7 R⊙, based on photometric observations obtained during quiescence. Lastly, we leverage the transient nature of the system to set an upper limit of $\dot{M}_{\rm acc} \lesssim 10^{-8.5}~{\rm M}_{\odot }~\mathrm{ yr}^{-1}$ on the present-day mass-transfer rate. Combining these with the orbital period of the system, Porb = 21.3 h, we search for viable evolution paths. The initial donor masses in the allowed solutions span the range 1 M⊙ ≲ Md,i ≲ 3.5 M⊙. All but the lowest masses in this range are consistent with the strong CNO-processing signature in the UV line ratios. The present-day donor mass in the permitted tracks are 0.5 M⊙ ≲ Md,obs ≲ 1.3 M⊙, higher than suggested by eclipse modelling. Since Porb is close to the so-called bifurcation period, both converging and diverging binary tracks are permitted. If the former is confirmed, J1858 will end its life as an ultracompact system with a substellar donor.
ABSTRACT We collate active galactic nuclei (AGN) with reported detections of both relativistic reflection and ultrafast outflows. By comparing the inclination of the inner disc from reflection with ...the line-of-sight velocity of the outflow, we show that it is possible to meaningfully constrain the geometry of the absorbing material. We find a clear relation between the velocity and inclination, and demonstrate that it can potentially be explained either by simple wind geometries or by absorption from the disc surface. Due to systematic errors and a shortage of high-quality simultaneous measurements our conclusions are tentative, but this study represents a proof-of-concept that has a great potential.
We present the discovery of an optical accretion disk wind in the X-ray transient Swift J1858.6-0814. Our 90-spectrum data set, taken with the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias telescope over eight ...different epochs and across five months, reveals the presence of conspicuous P-Cyg profiles in He i at 5876 and H . These features are detected throughout the entire campaign, albeit their intensity and main observational properties are observed to vary on timescales as short as 5 minutes. In particular, we observe significant variations in the wind velocity, between a few hundreds and ∼2400 . In agreement with previous reports, our observations are characterized by the presence of frequent flares, although the relation between the continuum flux variability and the presence/absence of wind features is not evident. The reported high activity of the system at radio waves indicates that the optical wind of Swift J1858.6-0814 is contemporaneous with the radio jet, as is the case for the handful of X-ray binary transients that have shown so far optical P-Cyg profiles. Finally, we compare our results with those of other sources showing optical accretion disk winds, with emphasis on V404 Cyg and V4641 Sgr, since they also display strong and variable optical wind features as well as similar flaring behavior.
All disc-accreting astrophysical objects produce powerful disc winds. In compact binaries containing neutron stars or black holes, accretion often takes place during violent outbursts. The main disc ...wind signatures during these eruptions are blue-shifted X-ray absorption lines, which are preferentially seen in disc-dominated 'soft states'
. By contrast, optical wind-formed lines have recently been detected in 'hard states', when a hot corona dominates the luminosity
. The relationship between these signatures is unknown, and no erupting system has as yet revealed wind-formed lines between the X-ray and optical bands, despite the many strong resonance transitions in this ultraviolet (UV) region
. Here we report that the transient neutron star binary Swift J1858.6-0814 exhibits wind-formed, blue-shifted absorption lines associated with C IV, N V and He II in time-resolved UV spectroscopy during a luminous hard state, which we interpret as a warm, moderately ionized outflow component in this state. Simultaneously observed optical lines also display transient blue-shifted absorption. Decomposing the UV data into constant and variable components, the blue-shifted absorption is associated with the former. This implies that the outflow is not associated with the luminous flares in the data. The joint presence of UV and optical wind features reveals a multi-phase and/or spatially stratified evaporative outflow from the outer disc
. This type of persistent mass loss across all accretion states has been predicted by radiation-hydrodynamic simulations
and helps to explain the shorter-than-expected duration of outbursts
