Summary
Old World camels have served humans in cross‐continental caravans, transporting people and goods, connecting different cultures and providing milk, meat, wool and draught since their ...domestication around 3000–6000 years ago. In a world of modern transport and fast connectivity, these beasts of burden seem to be out‐dated. However, a growing demand for sustainable milk and meat production, especially in countries affected by climate change and increasing desertification, brings dromedaries (Camelus dromedarius) and Bactrian camels (Camelus bactrianus) back onstage and into the focus of animal breeders and scientists. In this review on the molecular genetics of these economically important species we give an overview about the evolutionary history, domestication and dispersal of Old World camels, whereas highlighting the need for conservation of wild two‐humped camels (Camelus ferus) as an evolutionarily unique and highly endangered species. We provide cutting‐edge information on the current molecular resources and on‐going sequencing projects. We cannot emphasise enough the importance of balancing the need for improving camel production traits with maintaining the genetic diversity in two domestic species with specific physiological adaptation to a desert environment.
In Germany, currently two out of three medical students are female. Several studies corroborate that medical students show a significantly higher prevalence of stress-related mental disorders than ...the population in general.
We aimed to evaluate, if gender has an influence on the distribution of mental stress parameters and learning style among male and female medical students.
We investigated a total of 758 students of the medical faculty at the University of Erlangen-Nuernberg, Germany, using standardized and validated psychological questionnaires on depressive symptoms (BDI-II), burnout (BOSS-II) and quality of life (SF-12). In addition, we screened the students for their learning styles according to Kolb.
Out of 723 participants who declared their gender, 57.8% were female and 37.6% were male. Female students showed significantly higher values for depressiveness as well as for emotional and cognitive burnout, whereas the mental quality of life was significantly lower. A considerably higher percentage of male students with a converging or an accommodating learning style were found in comparison to their female fellows.
We postulate that an adaptation of the medical curriculum content to the investigated factors may contribute to a higher mental stability and less stress-related symptoms in medical students.
Alternatives to surgery are needed for the treatment of vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia. We investigated the effectiveness of imiquimod 5% cream, a topical immune-response modulator, for the ...treatment of this condition.
Fifty-two patients with grade 2 or 3 vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia were randomly assigned to receive either imiquimod or placebo, applied twice weekly for 16 weeks. The primary outcome was a reduction of more than 25% in lesion size at 20 weeks. Secondary outcomes were histologic regression, clearance of human papillomavirus (HPV) from the lesion, changes in immune cells in the epidermis and dermis of the vulva, relief of symptoms, improvement of quality of life, and durability of response. Reduction in lesion size was classified as complete response (elimination), strong partial response (76 to 99% reduction), weak partial response (26 to 75% reduction), or no response (< or =25% reduction). The follow-up period was 12 months.
Lesion size was reduced by more than 25% at 20 weeks in 21 of the 26 patients (81%) treated with imiquimod and in none of those treated with placebo (P<0.001). Histologic regression was significantly greater in the imiquimod group than in the placebo group (P<0.001). At baseline, 50 patients (96%) tested positive for HPV DNA. HPV cleared from the lesion in 15 patients in the imiquimod group (58%), as compared with 2 in the placebo group (8%) (P<0.001). The number of immune epidermal cells increased significantly and the number of immune dermal cells decreased significantly with imiquimod as compared with placebo. Imiquimod reduced pruritus and pain at 20 weeks (P=0.008 and P=0.004, respectively) and at 12 months (P=0.04 and P=0.02, respectively). The lesion progressed to invasion (to a depth of <1 mm) in 3 of 49 patients (6%) followed for 12 months (2 in the placebo group and 1 in the imiquimod group). Nine patients, all treated with imiquimod, had a complete response at 20 weeks and remained free from disease at 12 months.
Imiquimod is effective in the treatment of vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia. (Current Controlled Trials number, ISRCTN11290871 controlled-trials.com.).
The nematic susceptibility, χφ, of hole-doped Ba(1-x)K(x)Fe2As2 and electron-doped Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2 iron-based superconductors is obtained from measurements of the elastic shear modulus using a ...three-point bending setup in a capacitance dilatometer. Nematic fluctuations, although weakened by doping, extend over the whole superconducting dome in both systems, suggesting their close tie to superconductivity. Evidence for quantum critical behavior of χφ is, surprisingly, only found for Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2 and not for Ba(1-x)K(x)Fe2As2--the system with the higher maximal Tc value.
Using resistivity, heat-capacity, thermal-expansion, and susceptibility measurements we study the normal-state behavior of KFe2As2. Both the Sommerfeld coefficient (γ≈103 mJ mol(-1) K(-2)) and the ...Pauli susceptibility (χ≈4×10(-4)) are strongly enhanced, which confirm the existence of heavy quasiparticles inferred from previous de Haas-van Alphen and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments. We discuss this large enhancement using a Gutzwiller slave-boson mean-field calculation, which shows the proximity of KFe2As2 to an orbital-selective Mott transition. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the thermal expansion provide strong experimental evidence for the existence of a coherence-incoherence crossover, similar to what is found in heavy fermion and ruthenate compounds, due to Hund's coupling between orbitals.
Schistosomiasis is a vector-borne disease transmitted by freshwater snails and is prevalent in rural areas with poor sanitation and no access to tap water. Three snail species are known to transmit ...schistosomiasis in South Africa (SA), namely Biomphalaria pfeifferi, Bulinus globosus and Bulinus africanus. In 2003, a predicted prevalence of 70% was reported in tropical climates in SA. Temperature and rainfall variability can alter schistosomiasis-transmitting snails' development by increasing or decreasing their abundance and geographical distribution. This study aimed to map the historical distribution of schistosomiasis from 1950 to 2006 in SA. The snail sampling data were obtained from the historical National Snail Freshwater Collection (NFSC). Bioclimatic variables were extracted using ERA 5 reanalysis data provided by the Copernicus Climate Change Service. In this study, we used 19 bioclimatic and four soil variables. The temporal aggregation was the mean climatological period pre-calculated over the 40-year reference period with a spatial resolution of 0.5° x 0.5°. Multicollinearity was reduced by calculating the Variance Inflation Factor Core (VIF), and highly correlated variables (> 0.85) were excluded. To obtain an "ensemble" and avoid the integration of weak models, we averaged predictions using the True Skill Statistical (TSS) method. Results showed that the ensemble model achieved the highest Area Under the Curve (AUC) scores (0.99). For B. africanus, precipitation-related variables contributed to determining the suitability for schistosomiasis. Temperature and precipitation-related variables influenced the distribution of B. globosus in all three models. Biomphalaria pfeifferi showed that Temperature Seasonality (bio4) contributed the most (47%) in all three models. According to the models, suitable areas for transmitting schistosomiasis were in the eastern regions of South Africa. Temperature and rainfall can impact the transmission and distribution of schistosomiasis in SA. The results will enable us to develop future projections for Schistosoma in SA based on climate scenarios.
Mental health problems are common in medical professionals and their development already starts at the undergraduate level. Studies on medical students can replicate higher prevalence for depression ...and burnout in this group, but they normally compare semester cohorts in an anonymized, cross-sectional approach and without a preventive perspective.
We surveyed medical students at the beginning and end of their medical curriculum and collected data on burnout, depressivity, work related experience and salutogenesis parameters with validated self-administered questionnaires. Most remarkably we obtained the data from the same 58 individuals after 5.5 years, representing data of the highest quality in order to compare the mental health status at the beginning and the end of our students´ medical curriculum.
Our results not only show a severe exacerbation of physical, mental and emotional burnout in the participants at the end of their studies. The students also do not seem to have sufficient personal (resilience) or social resources (e.g. experience of social support) for coping with their mental health problems around the time of their graduation.
Our participants reflect a development of mental health during their medical studies at university that is paving the way to the devastating prevalence of mental disorders and suicide in health professionals. From our results we derive an urgent need to integrate self-care and active coping in the learning goals of medical curricula.
The emergent availability in public databases of more complete genome assemblies allows us to improve genomic data obtained by classical molecular cloning. The main goal of this study was to refine ...the genomic map of the dromedary TRG locus by integrating our previous genomic data with the analysis of recent genomic assemblies. We identified an additional TRGC cassette, defined as a V-J-C recombination unit, located at the 5’ of the locus and made up of five TRGV genes followed by three TRGJ genes and one TRGC gene. Hence, the complete dromedary TRG locus spans about 105 Kb and consists of three in tandem TRGC cassettes delimited by AMPH and STARD3NL genes at the 5′ and 3′ end, respectively. An expression assay carried out on peripheral blood showed the functional competency for the dromedary TRGC5 cassette and confirmed the presence of the somatic hypermutation mechanism able to enlarge the repertoire diversity of the dromedary γδ T cells.
•We upgraded the genomic organization of the TRG locus in Camelus dromedarius.•A further TRGC cassette with the basic V-J-J-C recombinational unit was identified.•Phylogenetic approaches demonstrate that the new cassette recalls the ancestral sheep TRGC5 one.•The dromedary TRGC5 cassette is located at the 5′ end of the locus and comprises five TRGV, three TRGJ and one TRGC genes.•An expression assay revealed that the TRGC5 cassette is functional and the genes undergo to the SHM.
This paper presents a novel, empirical analysis of the most common business models for the deployment of demand response and energy management systems, electricity and thermal storage, and solar PV ...distributed energy resources. We classify the revenue streams, customer segments, electricity services provided, and resources for 144 business models. We use this assessment to identify a set of business model “archetypes” in each resource category. Our analysis leads us to five observations that have important implications for policymakers and regulators. First, our analysis highlights that business models are deeply embedded in myriad policy and regulatory frameworks. Second, current DER business models are driven more by regulatory and policy factors than by technological factors. Third, the relatively small set of well-defined DER business model archetypes suggests that the determinants of success within a given archetype may include executional capabilities, culture, and other activities that are not captured in our framework. Fourth, continued cost declines, technological innovation, and changing policy and regulatory landscapes mean the business models of tomorrow will likely look very different than the business models of today. Finally, DER business models compete within archetypes for market share in providing a limited set of electricity services.
•We present an analysis of 144 distributed energy resource business models.•We highlight the policy dependencies of characterized business model archetypes.•Regulation and policy are key drivers of business model structure.•We find that business models are dynamic, changing with time, technology, and policy.•We call for regulation and policy proceedings to account for business model implications.
