Mon travail scientifique questionne l’inclusion des personnes en situation de handicap par la mobilisation de trois concepts : la liminalité (Murphy , 1990/1987), l’empan liminal (de Saint Martin, ...2019) et la liminoïdité (Turner, 1974, 1977, 1980, 1982, 1990). Cet article présente ces trois concepts et montre comment je les mets au travail au fil de recherches socio-clinique institutionnelles portant sur l'inclusion par la pratique théâtrale, recherches menées en partenariat avec des associations du milieu artisitique l’ARIA et le CNCA. Il met en exergue l’importance de la créativité, au cœur même de la liminoïdité, pour la production de connaissances.
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) can be prevented in pre‐diabetic individuals with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Here, we have used a metabolomics approach to identify candidate biomarkers of pre‐diabetes. ...We quantified 140 metabolites for 4297 fasting serum samples in the population‐based Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg (KORA) cohort. Our study revealed significant metabolic variation in pre‐diabetic individuals that are distinct from known diabetes risk indicators, such as glycosylated hemoglobin levels, fasting glucose and insulin. We identified three metabolites (glycine, lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) (18:2) and acetylcarnitine) that had significantly altered levels in IGT individuals as compared to those with normal glucose tolerance, with P‐values ranging from 2.4 × 10−4 to 2.1 × 10−13. Lower levels of glycine and LPC were found to be predictors not only for IGT but also for T2D, and were independently confirmed in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)‐Potsdam cohort. Using metabolite–protein network analysis, we identified seven T2D‐related genes that are associated with these three IGT‐specific metabolites by multiple interactions with four enzymes. The expression levels of these enzymes correlate with changes in the metabolite concentrations linked to diabetes. Our results may help developing novel strategies to prevent T2D.

Proteins are important molecules involved in an immensely large number of biological processes. Being capable of manipulating proteins is critical for developing reliable and affordable techniques to ...analyze and/or detect them. Such techniques would enable the production of therapeutic agents for the treatment of diseases or other biotechnological applications (e.g., bioreactors or biocatalysis). Microfluidic technology represents a potential solution to protein manipulation challenges because of the diverse phenomena that can be exploited to achieve micro‐ and nanoparticle manipulation. In this review, we discuss recent contributions made in the field of protein manipulation in microfluidic systems using different physicochemical principles and techniques, some of which are miniaturized versions of already established macro‐scale techniques.
Octreotide, a somatostatin analogue, has been used for more than 20 years in children with gastrointestinal bleeding, chylothorax or chylous ascites, intestinal lymphangiectasia, pancreatitis, ...intestinal dysmotility, and severe diarrhoea; however, until now, there is a lack of randomised clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of this compound in childhood. Ultraprocessing makes food products more convenient, appealing, and profitable. Recent studies show that high ultraprocessed food (UPF) intake is associated with cardiometabolic diseases.
The aim of ...this study is to investigate the association between UPF consumption and risks of kidney function decline in the general population.
In a prospective, general population–based Lifelines cohort from Northern Netherlands, 78,346 participants free of chronic kidney disease (CKD) at baseline responded to a 110-item FFQ. We used a multivariable regression analysis to study the associations of the proportion (in grams/day) of UPFs in the total diet with a composite kidney outcome incident CKD or a ≥30% estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline relative to baseline and annual change in eGFR.
On average, 37.7% of total food intake came from UPFs. After 3.6 ± 0.9 years of follow-up, 2470 participants (3.2%) reached the composite kidney outcome. Participants in the highest quartile of UPF consumption were associated with a higher risk of the composite kidney outcome (OR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.09–1.47; P = 0.003) compared with those in the lowest quartile, regardless of their macro- or micronutrient intake or diet quality. Participants in the highest quartile had a more rapid eGFR decline (β, –0.17; 95% CI, –0.23 to –0.11; P < 0.001) compared with those in the lowest quartile. Associations were generally consistent across different subgroups.
Higher UPF consumption was associated with a higher risk of a composite kidney outcome (incident CKD or ≥30% eGFR decline) and a more rapid eGFR decline in the general population, independent of confounders and other dietary indices.
Aim: We investigate the effects of the environmental and geographical processes driving growth resilience and recovery in response to drought in Mediterranean Pinus pinaster forests. We explicitly ...consider how intraspecific variability modulates growth resilience to drought. Location: Western Mediterranean basin. Methods: We analysed tree rings from a large network of 48 forests (836 trees) encompassing wide ecological and climatic gradients, including six provenances. To characterize the major constraints of P. pinaster growth under extremely dry conditions, we simulated growth responses to temperature and soil moisture using a process-based growth model coupled with the quantification of climate–growth relationships. Then, we related growth–resilience indices to provenance and site variables considering different drought events. Results: Pinus pinaster displayed strong variation in growth resilience across its distributional range, but common patterns were found within each provenance. Post-drought resilience increased with elevation and drier conditions but decreased with spring precipitation. Trees from dry sites were less resistant to drought but recovered faster than trees from wet sites. Main conclusions: Resilience strategies differed among tree provenances: wet forests showed higher growth resistance to drought, while dry forests presented faster growth recovery, suggesting different impacts of climate warming on forest productivity. We detected geographically structured resilience patterns corresponding to different provenances, confirming high intraspecific variability in response to drought. This information should be included in species distribution models to simulate forest responses to climate warming and forecasted aridification.
Purpose
Growing evidence in the literature suggests that obesity is capable of altering reproductive hormone levels and male fertility. Effects on classic semen parameters and sperm DNA fragmentation ...(SDF), however, have not been properly established. Additionally, the impact of bariatric surgery (BS) on those parameters is still controversial.
Materials and Methods
In Phase 1, 42 patients with obesity and 32 fertile controls were submitted to reproductive hormone evaluation, semen analysis, and SDF testing. In Phase 2, patients with obesity were submitted to BS or clinical follow-up and were invited to 6-month revaluation.
Results
Phase 1: Men with obesity have higher levels of estradiol, LH, and FSH and lower levels of total testosterone (TT) when compared with eutrophic fertile men. Additionally, they present worse semen parameters, with reduction in ejaculated volume and sperm concentration, worse sperm motility and morphology, and higher SDF. Phase 2: 32 patients returned to revaluation. Eighteen were submitted to BS (group S) and 14 were not submitted to any specific therapeutic regimen (group NS). In group S, TT more than doubled after surgery (294.5 to 604 ng/dL,
p
< 0.0001). Worsening of sperm concentration and total ejaculated sperm count were also noticed, and 2 patients became azoospermic after BS. SDF, however, improved after the procedure. No changes in the variables studied were observed in non-operated patients.
Conclusion
In this prospective study, we have found that BS results in improvements in reproductive hormone levels and SDF after 6-month follow-up. Sperm concentration, however, reduced after the procedure.
In an era of rapid global change, our ability to understand and predict Earth's natural systems is lagging behind our ability to monitor and measure changes in the biosphere. Bottlenecks to informing ...models with observations have reduced our capacity to fully exploit the growing volume and variety of available data. Here, we take a critical look at the information infrastructure that connects ecosystem modeling and measurement efforts, and propose a roadmap to community cyberinfrastructure development that can reduce the divisions between empirical research and modeling and accelerate the pace of discovery. A new era of data‐model integration requires investment in accessible, scalable, and transparent tools that integrate the expertise of the whole community, including both modelers and empiricists. This roadmap focuses on five key opportunities for community tools: the underlying foundations of community cyberinfrastructure; data ingest; calibration of models to data; model‐data benchmarking; and data assimilation and ecological forecasting. This community‐driven approach is a key to meeting the pressing needs of science and society in the 21st century.
Two large-scale phenotyping efforts, the European Mouse Disease Clinic (EUMODIC) and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute Mouse Genetics Project (SANGER-MGP), started during the late 2000s with the ...aim to deliver a comprehensive assessment of phenotypes or to screen for robust indicators of diseases in mouse mutants. They both took advantage of available mouse mutant lines but predominantly of the embryonic stem (ES) cells resources derived from the European Conditional Mouse Mutagenesis programme (EUCOMM) and the Knockout Mouse Project (KOMP) to produce and study 799 mouse models that were systematically analysed with a comprehensive set of physiological and behavioural paradigms. They captured more than 400 variables and an additional panel of metadata describing the conditions of the tests. All the data are now available through EuroPhenome database (www.europhenome.org) and the WTSI mouse portal (http://www.sanger.ac.uk/mouseportal/), and the corresponding mouse lines are available through the European Mouse Mutant Archive (EMMA), the International Knockout Mouse Consortium (IKMC), or the Knockout Mouse Project (KOMP) Repository. Overall conclusions from both studies converged, with at least one phenotype scored in at least 80 % of the mutant lines. In addition, 57 % of the lines were viable, 13 % subviable, 30 % embryonic lethal, and 7 % displayed fertility impairments. These efforts provide an important underpinning for a future global programme that will undertake the complete functional annotation of the mammalian genome in the mouse model.
Forecasted increase drought frequency and severity may drive worldwide declines in forest productivity. Species‐level responses to a drier world are likely to be influenced by their functional ...traits. Here, we analyse forest resilience to drought using an extensive network of tree‐ring width data and satellite imagery. We compiled proxies of forest growth and productivity (TRWi, absolutely dated ring‐width indices; NDVI, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) for 11 tree species and 502 forests in Spain corresponding to Mediterranean, temperate, and continental biomes. Four different components of forest resilience to drought were calculated based on TRWi and NDVI data before, during, and after four major droughts (1986, 1994–1995, 1999, and 2005), and pointed out that TRWi data were more sensitive metrics of forest resilience to drought than NDVI data. Resilience was related to both drought severity and forest composition. Evergreen gymnosperms dominating semi‐arid Mediterranean forests showed the lowest resistance to drought, but higher recovery than deciduous angiosperms dominating humid temperate forests. Moreover, semi‐arid gymnosperm forests presented a negative temporal trend in the resistance to drought, but this pattern was absent in continental and temperate forests. Although gymnosperms in dry Mediterranean forests showed a faster recovery after drought, their recovery potential could be constrained if droughts become more frequent. Conversely, angiosperms and gymnosperms inhabiting temperate and continental sites might have problems to recover after more intense droughts since they resist drought but are less able to recover afterwards.
In this study, we analysed the resistance and resilience to drought of forests dominated by 11 species across wide climatic and environmental gradients in the Mediterranean basin using proxies of forest productivity (NDVI) and carbon accumulation (ring‐width indices, TRWi) and considering four extreme drought events recorded between 1980 and 2005. Our results indicate that drought intensity is a major driver of forest resilience to drought but that species inhabiting different regions present different strategies to cope with drought and thus they can respond differently to more frequent and severe droughts.
