Abstract Objectives To investigate the deployment-related medical conditions and shipboard tactical training-related injuries in a Chinese Navy population. Study design A retrospective study with the ...Chinese Navy was conducted. Methods The medical records of 1543 Navy crewmembers from 2011 to 2015 were collected. The distribution and incidence rate (IR) of different types of medical conditions were provided and compared between the Aden Gulf deployment and nondeployment periods. The occurrence of military training-related injuries in crewmembers receiving 12-week shipboard tactical training was compared with that of 956 marines and 4371 recruits receiving combat and physical training, respectively. The anatomic locations and types of training-related injury were analyzed. Results Compared with the nondeployment period, the percentages of the following injuries were significantly higher during deployment: injuries and certain other consequences of external causes (16.97% vs 7.76%), diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (15.40% vs 10.34%) and mental and behavioral disorders (11.23% vs 3.45%); however, respiratory system diseases had a lower percentage (19.84% vs 28.35%). Far seas deployment significantly increased the IRs of acute upper respiratory infection, skin and eye infection, sprains and low back pain as well as aphthous ulcer, insomnia, and seasickness ( P < 0.05, 0.01 or 0.001). Shipboard training induced higher IRs of injuries to the upper extremities, spine and back and head and face than physical training and a higher incidence of head and face injury than combat training ( P < 0.05 or 0.001). Physical training had higher IRs of overuse injuries than shipboard and combat training ( P < 0.001). The IR of fracture was higher during combat and physical training than shipboard training ( P < 0.01 and 0.001). Conclusions The Chinese Navy has experienced novel health issues in crewmembers in recent years. Corresponding countermeasures should be taken to address deployment-related medical conditions and shipboard training-related injuries in the future.
Conservation biology emerged as a crisis discipline in the twentieth century amongst an increasing awareness of pollution and habitat loss. Since the early 2000s, societal and monetary benefits of ...nature were added to the narrative for biodiversity conservation. Using text mining, we show that authors now favour ecosystem-services over a crisis framing in scientific publications on coastal habitats. This may signal a shift in conservation science from a crisis to a services discipline despite continuing habitat loss. We discuss whether authors should more critically assess what conservation narrative they deploy and what consequences this may have for conservation action.
Oxidative deterioration of vegetable oils is of great importance in the food industry. In China, vegetable oils produced via thermal pretreatment are popular owing to their strong oil flavor and ...enhanced yield. Here, we review: (i) the currently employed thermal treatment methods of oilseeds before oil extraction; (ii) effects of thermal treatments on the physicochemical properties, contents of minor lipid components, and oxidative stability of vegetable oils; and (iii) Maillard model systems that are related to oil and oilseed chemistry. Among the thermal pretreatment technologies, microwave and infrared radiations are promising, but these are not performed on the same large production scales as roasting. For most oilseeds, thermal treatments increase the yield of extracted oil and content of minor lipid compounds in the oil, such as polyphenols, tocopherols, and phytosterols. In addition, some Maillard reaction products (MRPs) generated by heating oilseeds have been extracted. The presence of both minor lipids and MRPs in the oil confers improved oxidative stability. However, the mechanism or relationship between thermal treatment and oxidative stability is yet to be clearly elucidated because vegetable oil oxidation is dependent on variables such as unsaturation, concentration and types of minor lipid components, MRPs, and the potential synergistic effects of these components. Recently, several Maillard reaction models related to thermally treated oilseeds have been established, suggesting that MRPs play a critical role during oxidation. However, comprehensive identification of antioxidants and the mechanism by which they inhibit oxidation are lacking. Future research can be performed to establish models that would help elucidate the antioxidative mechanisms of MRPs for more oilseeds. Using these models, it will be possible to predict the oil quality after processing, based on the presence of MRPs and oil chemistry.
The western tropical Pacific gives birth to 23 tropical cyclones annually, bringing torrential rainfall to mountainous islands across Oceania resulting in a global sediment production hotspot, in ...which many rivers have great hyperpycnal potential. By using a temperature (T) and salinity (S) profiler, we observed anomalously warm, low salinity turbid water at 3000–3700 m depths in seas ∼180 km off southwestern Taiwan immediately after Typhoon Morakot in 2009. This 250m‐thick bottom‐hugging water occupies ∼2400 km2, and contains 0.15% freshwater, suggesting a remarkably high fraction (6–10%) of event rainfall from southwestern Taiwan. These characteristics indicate the turbid water originated from shallow coastal waters via hyperpycnal flow. Apparently, sediment produced from the land during tropical cyclones open an “express gate” to convey heat and freshwater vertically to the deep ocean basin subsequently warming the deep water from the bottom up.
We report new limits on cosmic neutrino fluxes from the test flight of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment, which completed an 18.4 day flight of a prototype long-duration ...balloon payload, called ANITA-lite, in early 2004. We search for impulsive events that could be associated with ultrahigh energy neutrino interactions in the ice and derive limits that constrain several models for ultrahigh energy neutrino fluxes and rule out the long-standing -burst model.
The process e^{+}e^{-}→D_{s}^{*+}D_{s}^{*-} is studied with a semi-inclusive method using data samples at center-of-mass energies from threshold to 4.95 GeV collected with the BESIII detector ...operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. The Born cross sections of the process are measured for the first time with high precision in this energy region. Two resonance structures are observed in the energy-dependent cross sections around 4.2 and 4.4 GeV. By fitting the cross sections with a coherent sum of three Breit-Wigner amplitudes and one phase-space amplitude, the two significant structures are assigned masses of (4186.8±8.7±30) and (4414.6±3.4±6.1) MeV/c^{2}, widths of (55±15±53) and (122.5±7.5±8.1) MeV, where the first errors are statistical and the second ones are systematic. The inclusion of a third Breit-Wigner amplitude is necessary to describe a structure around 4.79 GeV.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex disease trait of unknown aetiology. Genome-wide linkage studies in human SLE identified several linkage regions, including one at 1q23, which contains ...multiple susceptibility genes, including the members of the signalling lymphocyte activation molecule (SLAM) locus. In mice there is a syntenic linkage region, Sle1. The SLAM genes are functionally related cell-surface receptors, which regulate signal transduction of cells in the immune system. Family-based association study in UK and Canadian SLE families identified variants in the promoter and coding region of SLAMF7 and LY9 contributing to SLE disease susceptibility. The strongest association was from rs509749, in exon 8 of LY9 (P=0.00209). rs509749 encodes a Val/Met nonsynonymous change in amino acid 602 in the cytoplasmic domain of LY9. In the parents and affected individuals from the Canadian SLE families, the risk allele of rs509049 skews the T-cell population by increasing the number of CD8+ memory T cells, while decreasing the proportion of CD4+ naïve T cells and activated T cells. Since rs509749 lies within the consensus binding site for SAP/SH2D1a, which influences downstream signalling events from LY9, the mechanism for increased CD8+ memory T cells may include differential binding SAP/SH2D1a to the cytoplasmic domain of LY9.
Coastal wetlands, such as saltmarshes, are globally widespread and highly effective at capturing and storing ‘blue carbon’ and have the potential to regulate climate over varying timescales. Yet only ...Australia and the United States of America have national inventories of organic carbon held within saltmarsh habitats, hindering the development of policies and management strategies to protect and preserve these organic carbon stores. Here we couple a new observational dataset with 4,797 samples from 26 saltmarshes across Great Britain to spatially model organic carbon stored in the soil and the above and belowground biomass of Great British saltmarshes. Using average values derived from the 26 marshes, we deliver first-order estimates of organic carbon stocks across Great Britain’s 448 saltmarshes (451.66 km
2
). The saltmarshes of Great Britain contain 5.20 ± 0.65 Mt of organic carbon, 93% of which is in the soil. On average, the saltmarshes store 11.55 ± 1.56 kg C m
-2
with values ranging between 2.24 kg C m
-2
and 40.51 kg C m
-2
depending on interlinked factors such as geomorphology, organic carbon source, sediment type (mud vs sand), sediment supply, and relative sea level history. These findings affirm that saltmarshes represent the largest intertidal blue carbon store in Great Britain, yet remain an unaccounted for component of the United Kingdom’s natural carbon stores.
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) used an array of 3He proportional counters to measure the rate of neutral-current interactions in heavy water and precisely determined the total active (nu_x) ...8B solar neutrino flux. This technique is independent of previous methods employed by SNO. The total flux is found to be 5.54_-0.31;+0.33(stat)-0.34+0.36(syst)x10(6) cm(-2) s(-1), in agreement with previous measurements and standard solar models. A global analysis of solar and reactor neutrino results yields Deltam2=7.59_-0.21;+0.19x10(-5) eV2 and theta=34.4_-1.2;+1.3 degrees. The uncertainty on the mixing angle has been reduced from SNO's previous results.
