Abstract
Cognitive function relies on a balanced interplay between excitatory and inhibitory neurons (INs), but the impact of estradiol on IN function is not fully understood. Here, we characterize ...the regulation of hippocampal INs by aromatase, the enzyme responsible for estradiol synthesis, using a combination of molecular, genetic, functional and behavioral tools. The results show that CA1 parvalbumin-expressing INs (PV-INs) contribute to brain estradiol synthesis. Brain aromatase regulates synaptic inhibition through a mechanism that involves modification of perineuronal nets enwrapping PV-INs. In the female brain, aromatase modulates PV-INs activity, the dynamics of network oscillations and hippocampal-dependent memory. Aromatase regulation of PV-INs and inhibitory synapses is determined by the gonads and independent of sex chromosomes. These results suggest PV-INs are mediators of estrogenic regulation of behaviorally-relevant activity.
Photoactivation with ultraviolet C light can reverse the effects derived from biological ageing by restoring a hydrophilic surface. Ten titanium discs were randomly divided into three groups: a ...control group, a 6 W group, and an 85 W group. A drop of double-distilled, deionized, and sterile 10 µL water was applied to each of the discs. Each disc was immediately photographed in a standardized and perpendicular manner. Measurements were taken based on the irradiation time (15, 30, 60, and 120 min). UVC irradiation improved the control values in both groups. There was no difference in its effect between the 6 W group and the other groups during the first 30 min. However, after 60 min and up to 120 min, 85 W had a significantly stronger effect. The contact angles with the 85 W ultraviolet light source at 60 and 120 min were 19.43° and 31.41°, respectively, whereas the contact angles for the 6 W UVC source were 73.8° and 61.45°. Power proved to be the most important factor, and the best hydrophilicity result was obtained with a power of 85 W for 60 min at a wavelength of 254 nm.
MULTISENSORY FEEDBACK TO TEACHING / LEARNING PRONUNCIATION OF SPANISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE Auditory perception of a stimulus might not be enough to accurately acquire the phonetics of Spanish as a foreign language. Technology can provide objective, understandable, immediate, self-regulated and self-sufficient feedback to students improving their performance. If feedback is presented by three -auditory, visual, and kinaesthetic- integrated routes of access to the stimulus, its auditory perception is reinforced. Therefore, pronunciation of the foreign language is enhanced. Most of the works about the Spanish pronunciation pedagogy focus on contrastive phonologies between Spanish and learners’ native languages. In addition, visual feedback to teach Spanish pronunciation is barely used. To contribute to the pedagogy of the pronunciation of Spanish as a foreign language, this work proposes a teaching-learning model of Spanish phonetics based on self-regulated multisensorial feedback, which language teachers can introduce and adapt into their classrooms.

Mistakes are often made when an oral corpus is collected and sometimes these mistakes could make impossible a future phonetic analysis of the data. To avoid this happen some advices are proposed in ...this paper regarded to participants, to recordings, and to available tools in order to build an oral corpus. The purpose of this paper is to advice future researchers in building this kind of corpus. These advices will help them to build an accurate corpus to phonetics analysis following current scientific quality standards.
Death receptors are members of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily involved in the extrinsic apoptotic pathway. Lifeguard (LFG) is a death receptor antagonist mainly expressed in the ...nervous system that specifically blocks Fas ligand (FasL)-induced apoptosis. To investigate its mechanism of action, we studied its subcellular localization and its interaction with members of the Bcl-2 family proteins. We performed an analysis of LFG subcellular localization in murine cortical neurons and found that LFG localizes mainly to the ER and Golgi. We confirmed these results with subcellular fractionation experiments. Moreover, we show by co-immunoprecipitation experiments that LFG interacts with Bcl-XL and Bcl-2, but not with Bax or Bak, and this interaction likely occurs in the endoplasmic reticulum. We further investigated the relationship between LFG and Bcl-XL in the inhibition of apoptosis and found that LFG protects only type II apoptotic cells from FasL-induced death in a Bcl-XL dependent manner. The observation that LFG itself is not located in mitochondria raises the question as to whether LFG in the ER participates in FasL-induced death. Indeed, we investigated the degree of calcium mobilization after FasL stimulation and found that LFG inhibits calcium release from the ER, a process that correlates with LFG blockage of cytochrome c release to the cytosol and caspase activation. On the basis of our observations, we propose that there is a required step in the induction of type II apoptotic cell death that involves calcium mobilization from the ER and that this step is modulated by LFG.
