This Letter reports a measurement of the flux and energy spectrum of electron antineutrinos from six 2.9 GWth nuclear reactors with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 and 561 ...m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls in the Daya Bay experiment. Using 217 days of data, 296 721 and 41 589 inverse β decay (IBD) candidates were detected in the near and far halls, respectively. The measured IBD yield is (1.55±0.04) ×10(-18) cm(2) GW(-1) day(-1) or (5.92±0.14) ×10(-43) cm(2) fission(-1). This flux measurement is consistent with previous short-baseline reactor antineutrino experiments and is 0.946±0.022 (0.991±0.023) relative to the flux predicted with the Huber-Mueller (ILL-Vogel) fissile antineutrino model. The measured IBD positron energy spectrum deviates from both spectral predictions by more than 2σ over the full energy range with a local significance of up to ∼4σ between 4-6 MeV. A reactor antineutrino spectrum of IBD reactions is extracted from the measured positron energy spectrum for model-independent predictions.
A measurement of electron antineutrino oscillation by the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is described in detail. Six 2.9-GWth nuclear power reactors of the Daya Bay and Ling Ao nuclear power ...facilities served as intense sources of ν¯e’s. Comparison of the ν¯e rate and energy spectrum measured by antineutrino detectors far from the nuclear reactors (∼1500–1950 m) relative to detectors near the reactors (∼350–600 m) allowed a precise measurement of ν¯e disappearance. More than 2.5 million ν¯e inverse beta-decay interactions were observed, based on the combination of 217 days of operation of six antineutrino detectors (December, 2011–July, 2012) with a subsequent 1013 days using the complete configuration of eight detectors (October, 2012–July, 2015). The ν¯e rate observed at the far detectors relative to the near detectors showed a significant deficit, R=0.949±0.002(stat)±0.002(syst). The energy dependence of ν¯e disappearance showed the distinct variation predicted by neutrino oscillation. Analysis using an approximation for the three-flavor oscillation probability yielded the flavor-mixing angle sin22θ13=0.0841±0.0027(stat)±0.0019(syst) and the effective neutrino mass-squared difference of |Δmee2|=(2.50±0.06(stat)±0.06(syst))×10−3 eV2. Analysis using the exact three-flavor probability found Δm322=(2.45±0.06(stat)±0.06(syst))×10−3 eV2 assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy and Δm322=(−2.56±0.06(stat)±0.06(syst))×10−3 eV2 for the inverted hierarchy.
•Effects of precipitates in HEAs on irradiation damage resistance were explored.•HEAs have shown high irradiation-induced hardening resistance.•The HEA containing massive precipitates showed improved ...irradiation resistance.•The superior irradiation resistance of the aged HEAs is due to disordering and dissolution of precipitates.
Evolution of nanosized precipitates in typical (CoCrFeNi)94Ti2Al4 high entropy alloys under irradiation and its effect on the irradiation resistance were investigated in detail. The as-solutionized samples and the aged samples with massive nanosized precipitates were irradiated at ambient temperatures with a dose ranging from 10 to 49 dpa of 4 MeV Au ions. It was found that the ordered precipitates became disordered quickly at the early stage under 10 dpa irradiation, accompanying with the dissolution process which became more and more severer at higher doses. After irradiation, the hardness slightly changed in the aged specimens containing massive precipitates, but increased by> 30% in the as-solutionized ones with no precipitates. The obvious hardness increment in the as-solutionized samples is due to the creation of defects while the small variations of the hardness in the aged specimens can be ascribed to the disordering and dissolution of precipitates. In addition, the size of dislocation loops induced by the irradiation in the aged specimens is much smaller than that in the as-solutionized samples. We confirmed that presence of the nanosized precipitates delayed defect evolution and reduced the sizes of dislocation loops.
In humans, obesity is associated with increased or decreased levels of serum biochemical indicators. However, the relationship is not as well understood in chickens. Due to long-term intense ...selection for fast growth rate, modern broilers have the problem of excessive fat deposition, exhibiting biochemical or metabolic changes. In the current study, the Northeast Agricultural University broiler lines divergently selected for abdominal fat content (NEAUHLF) were used to identify differences in serum biochemical parameters between the 2 lines. A total of 18 serum biochemical indicators were investigated in the 16th, 17th, and 18th generation populations of NEAUHLF, and the genetic parameters of these serum biochemical indicators were estimated. After analyzing the data from these 3 generations together, the results showed that the levels of 16 of the tested serum biochemical parameters were significantly different between the lean and fat birds. In the fat birds, serum concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), HDL-C:low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total bile acid, total protein, albumin, globulin, aspartate transaminase (AST):alanine transaminase (ALT), γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), uric acid, and creatinine were very significantly higher (P < 0.01), whereas LDL-C, albumin:globulin, glucose, AST, ALT, and free fatty acids concentrations in serum were very significantly lower than those in the lean birds (P < 0.01). Of these 16 serum biochemical parameters, 5 (LDL-C, HDL-C:LDL-C, total bile acid, albumin, and albumin:globulin) had high heritabilities (0.58 ≤ h2 ≤ 0.89), 6 (HDL-C, total protein, globulin, AST:ALT, GGT, and creatinine) had moderate heritabilities (0.29 ≤ h2 ≤ 0.48), and the remaining 5 had low heritabilities (h2 < 0.20). Serum HDL-C, HDL-C:LDL-C, and glucose had higher positive genetic correlation coefficients (rg) with abdominal fat traits (0.30 ≤ rg ≤ 0.80), whereas serum globulin, AST, and uric acid showed higher negative genetic correlations with abdominal fat traits (–0.62 ≤ rg ≤ –0.30). The remaining 10 serum biochemical parameters had lower genetic correlations with abdominal fat traits (–0.30 < rg < 0.30). In conclusion, we identified serum HDL-C and HDL-C:LDL-C levels as potential biomarkers for selection of lean birds. These findings will also be useful in future studies for investigating obesity and lipid metabolism in humans as well as in other animal species.
The neutral heating efficiency is commonly defined as the fraction of the solar extreme ultraviolet and X-ray energy absorbed by a planetary atmosphere that ends up as local heat. It is a crucial ...parameter that determines the upper atmospheric temperature and, consequently, the thermal escape rate on both solar system bodies and exoplanets. Combining the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution measurements of a variety of atmospheric parameters, we calculate the neutral heating efficiency in the dayside Martian upper atmosphere based on a complicated network of microscopic processes, including photon and photoelectron impact processes, as well as exothermic chemical reactions. Our calculations indicate that neutral heating is mainly contributed by photon impact at low altitudes, of which the bulk occurs via CO2 photodissociation, and exothermic chemistry at high altitudes, of which the bulk occurs via and dissociative recombination. Collisional quenching of metastable neutrals and ions, which is of great interest in the literature, contributes to local heating by no more than 10% at all altitudes. In the dayside median sense, the neutral heating efficiency remains roughly constant at 20% from 150 to 200 km and increases steadily to 32% near 250 km. The heating efficiency at 150-200 km shows a weak correlation with solar zenith angle, increases modestly with increasing solar activity, and is clearly enhanced over strong crustal magnetic anomalies. Throughout the study, strict local heating is assumed, but nonlocal heating does not affect our results near or below 200 km.

A search for light sterile neutrino mixing was performed with the first 217 days of data from the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. The experiment's unique configuration of multiple baselines ...from six 2.9 GW(th) nuclear reactors to six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 m and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls makes it possible to test for oscillations to a fourth (sterile) neutrino in the 10(-3) eV(2)<|Δm(41)(2) |< 0.3 eV(2) range. The relative spectral distortion due to the disappearance of electron antineutrinos was found to be consistent with that of the three-flavor oscillation model. The derived limits on sin(2) 2θ(14) cover the 10(-3) eV(2) ≲ |Δm(41)(2)| ≲ 0.1 eV(2) region, which was largely unexplored.
•We successfully generated a ovarian cells model with excessive autophagy, which provided a research tool for studying POI in vitro.•MT protected against both the decline of AMH expression and ...mitochondrial membrane potential induced by excessive autophagy.•MT protected against excessive autophagy-induced decrease of nucleus-encoded proteins and mitochondrial dynamic-related proteins.•MT decreased mitochondrial oxidative stress, increased SOD2 and ameliorated the G2/M cell cycle arrest induced by excessive autophagy.•MT inhibited excessive autophagy-induced activation of ERK signaling pathway.
Excessive autophagy-induced follicular atresia of ovarian granulosa cells might be one of the pathogenesis of Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI), and melatonin (MT) exerted many beneficial effects on mitochondria. However, there was little report regarding the beneficial effects of MT on excessive autophagy-induced mitochondrial and ovarian reserve function deficiency, and the mechanisms have not been clearly identified. Autophagy played a protective role in cells survival, however, high level of autophagy could lead to cell death. In this report, firstly, Chinese hamster ovary cell damage model stably expressing EGFP-LC3 was established. Next, we systematically investigated the protective effects of MT on mitochondrial and ovarian reserve function and molecular mechanisms using this cell damage model. Our results revealed that 10-9 M MT not only protected against the decline of anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) expression induced by excessive autophagy, but also rescued excessive autophagy-induced impairment of mitochondrial expression and mitochondrial membrane potential. Furthermore, MT protected against excessive autophagy-induced decrease of nucleus-encoded proteins including SDHA and mitofilin, and mitochondrial dynamic-related proteins including OPA1, MFN2, and DRP1. MT also decreased mitochondrial oxidative stress, increased antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) expression and ameliorated the G2/M cell cycle arrest induced by excessive autophagy. Finally, MT inhibited excessive autophagy-induced activation of extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathway. In conclusion, our study showed that MT rescued impairment of mitochondrial and ovarian reserve function, and production of mitochondrial ROS and cell cycle arrest induced by excessive autophagy through down-regulated ERK pathway, implying the potential therapeutic drug target for POI.
The bones of chicken play an important role in supporting and protecting the body. The growth and development of bones have a substantial influence on the health and production performance in ...chickens. However, genetic architecture underlying chicken bone traits is not well understood. The objectives of this study are to dissect the genetic basis of bone traits in chickens and to identify valuable genes and genetic markers for chicken breeding. We performed a combination of genome-wide association study (GWAS) and selection signature analysis (fixation index values and nucleotide diversity ratios) in an F2 crossbred experimental population with different genetic backgrounds (broiler × layer) to identify candidate genes and significant variants related to femur, shank, keel length, chest width, metatarsal claw weight, metatarsal length, and metatarsal circumference. A total of 545 individuals were genotyped based on the whole genome re-sequencing method (26 F0 individuals were re-sequenced at 10 × coverage; 519 F2 individuals were re-sequenced at 3 × coverage). A total of 2 028 112 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) remained to carry out analysis after quality control and imputation. The integration of GWAS and selection signature analysis indicated that all significant SNPs responsible for bone traits were mainly localized on chicken chromosomes 1, 4, and 27. Finally, we identified 21 positional candidate genes that might regulate chicken bone growth and development, including LRCH1, RB1, FNDC3A, MLNR, CAB39L, FOXO1, LHFP, TRPC4, POSTN, SMAD9, RBPJ, PPARGC1A, SLIT2, NCAPG, NKX3-2, CPZ, SPOP, NGFR, SOST, ZNF652, and HOXB3. Additionally, an array of uncharacterized genes was identified. The findings provide an in-depth understanding of the genetic architecture of chicken bone traits and offer a molecular basis for applying genomics in practical chicken breeding.
We study the process e^{+}e^{-}→Λ_{c}^{+}Λover ¯_{c}^{-} at twelve center-of-mass energies from 4.6119 to 4.9509 GeV using data samples collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The ...Born cross sections and effective form factors (|G_{eff}|) are determined with unprecedented precision after combining the single and double-tag methods based on the decay process Λ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+}. Flat cross sections around 4.63 GeV are obtained and no indication of the resonant structure Y(4630), as reported by Belle, is found. In addition, no oscillatory behavior is discerned in the |G_{eff}| energy dependence of Λ_{c}^{+}, in contrast to what is seen for the proton and neutron cases. Analyzing the cross section together with the polar-angle distribution of the Λ_{c}^{+} baryon at each energy point, the moduli of electric and magnetic form factors (|G_{E}| and |G_{M}|) are extracted and separated. For the first time, the energy dependence of the form factor ratio |G_{E}/G_{M}| is observed, which can be well described by an oscillatory function.
