Studies of nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharge plasma-assisted combustion were carried out on a laminar premixed methane/air flow in the vicinity of the lean flammability limit. Experimental ...results indicated that complete combustion is achieved when the equivalence ratio is above the known lean flammability limit (ϕ=0.53) at high discharge repetition rates of 50kHz. When the ratio is below the limit, the plasma does serve as a flame holder; however, only partial combustion is seen in the downstream flow. Two-dimensional kinetic simulation results were found to be consistent with the experimental results. The simulations revealed that the methane is fully consumed within the discharge region, since the time between discharge pulses is less than that for species diffusion and advection. This creates a source of radicals and high temperature, which diffuse outwards to stabilize the combustion of the surrounding flow.
Symbiosis in insects is accumulating significant amount of studies: the description of a wide array of mutualistic associations across the evolutionary history of insects suggests that resident ...microbiota acts as a driving force by affecting several aspects of hosts biology. Among arthropods, mosquito midgut microbiota has been largely investigated, providing crucial insights on the role and implications of host-symbiont relationships. However, limited amount of studies addressed their efforts on the investigation of microbiota colonizing salivary glands and reproductive tracts, crucial organs for pathogen invasion and vertical transmission of symbiotic microorganisms. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing-based approach, we analysed the microbiota of gut, salivary glands and reproductive tracts of several mosquito species, representing some of the main vectors of diseases, aiming at describing the dynamics of bacterial communities within the individual.
We identified a shared core microbiota between different mosquito species, although interesting inter- and intra-species differences were detected. Additionally, our results showed deep divergences between genera, underlining microbiota specificity and adaptation to their host.
The comprehensive landscape of the bacterial microbiota components may ultimately provide crucial insights and novel targets for possible application of symbionts in innovative strategies for the control of vector borne diseases, globally named Symbiotic Control (SC), and suggesting that the holobiont of different mosquito species may significantly vary. Moreover, mosquito species are characterized by distinctive microbiota in different organs, likely reflecting different functions and/or adaptation processes.
Objectives This study aims to evaluate the rate of stent malapposition, plaque prolapse and fibrous cap rupture detected by optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging according to carotid stent ...design. Design It was a prospective single-centre study. Materials and methods Forty consecutive patients undergoing protected carotid artery stenting (CAS) and high-definition OCT image acquisition were enrolled in the study. OCT frames were analysed off-line, in a dedicated core laboratory by two independent physicians. Cross-sectional OCT images within the stented segment of the internal carotid artery were evaluated at 1-mm intervals for the presence of strut malapposition, plaque prolapse and fibrous cap rupture according to stent design. Results Closed-cell design stents (CC) were used in 17 patients (42.5%), open-cell design stents (OC) in 13 (32.5%) and hybrid design stents (Hyb) in 10 (25%). No procedural or post-procedural neurological complications occurred (stroke/death 0% at 30 days). On OCT analysis the frequencies of malapposed struts were higher with CC compared to OC and Hyb (34.5% vs 15% and 16.3%, respectively; p < 0.01). Plaque prolapse was more frequent with OC vs CC (68.6% vs 23.3%; p < 0.01) and vs Hyb stents (30.8%; p < 0.01). Significant differences were also noted in the rates of fibrous cap rupture between CC and OC (24.2% vs 43.8%; p < 0.01), and between CC and Hyb (24.2% vs 39.6%; p < 0.01), but not between OC and Hyb stents ( p = 0.4). Conclusion Intravascular OCT after CAS revealed that micro-defects after stent deployment are frequent and are related to the design of implanted stents. Stent malapposition is more frequent with CC stents, while plaque prolapse is more common with OC stents. It remains, however, unknown whether these figures now detected with OCT are of any clinical and prognostic significance.
Waveguiding and bending modes are investigated in a fully tunable plasma photonic crystal. The plasma device actively controls the propagation of free space electromagnetic waves in the S to X band ...of the microwave spectrum. An array of discharge plasma tubes form a square crystal lattice exhibiting a well-defined bandgap, with individual active switching of the plasma elements to allow for waveguiding and bending modes to be generated dynamically. We show, through simulations and experiments, the existence of transverse electric (TE) mode waveguiding and bending modes.
This paper describes a mechanism for the stabilization of ultra lean premixed methane/air flames by pulsed nonequilibrium plasma enhancement. It is shown that the pulsed discharge plasma produces a ...cool (∼500–600
K) stream of relatively stable intermediate species including hydrogen (H
2) and carbon monoxide (CO), which play a central role in enhancing flame stability. This stream is readily visualized by ultraviolet emission from electronically excited hydroxyl (OH) radicals. The rotational and vibrational temperature of this “preflame” are determined from its emission spectrum. Qualitative imaging of the overall flame structure is obtained by planar laser-induced fluorescence measurements of OH. Preflame nitric oxide (NO) concentrations are determined by gas sampling chromatography. A simple numerical model of this plasma enhanced premixed flame is proposed that includes the generation of the preflame through plasma activation, and predicts the formation of a dual flame structure that arises when the preflame serves to pilot the combustion of the surrounding non-activated premixed flow. The calculation represents the plasma through its ability to produce an initial radical yield, which serves as a boundary condition for conventional flame simulations. The simulations also capture the presence of the preflame and the dual flame structure, and predict preflame levels of NO comparable to those measured. A subsequent pseudo-sensitivity analysis of the preflame shows that flame stability is most sensitive to the concentrations of H
2 and CO in the preflame. As a consequence of the role of H
2 and CO in enhancing the flame stability, the blowout limit extensions of methane/air and hydrogen/air mixtures in the absence/presence of a discharge are investigated experimentally. For methane/air mixtures, the blowout limit of the current burner is extended by ∼10% in the presence of a discharge while comparable studies carried out in lean hydrogen/air flames fail to extend this limit.
