Plants continuously rely on light as an energy source and as the driver of many processes in their lifetimes. The ability to perceive different light radiations involves several photoreceptors, which ...in turn activate complex signalling cascades that ultimately lead to a rearrangement in plant metabolism as an adaptation strategy towards specific light conditions. This review, after a brief summary of the structure and mode of action of the different photoreceptors, introduces the main classes of secondary metabolites and specifically focuses on the influence played by the different wavelengths on the content of these compounds in agricultural plants, because of their recognised roles as nutraceuticals.
We evaluated factors associated with lack of triple vaccination (hepatitis A virus HAV, hepatitis B virus HBV, and human papillomavirus HPV) among men who have sex with men using pre-exposure ...prophylaxis (PrEP).
PrEP users at the San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Italy, with ≥1 follow-up visit (May 2017-2022).
Participants were considered protected if (1) before PrEP access: positive serology (IgG-HAV+, hepatitis B surface antigen >10 mUI/mL) or vaccination history was recorded and (2) after starting PrEP: ≥1 dose of each vaccination was administered. Individuals were considered fully protected if they received the following before/during PrEP access: HAV vaccination/infection, HBV vaccination/infection, and HPV vaccination. χ 2 and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare characteristics of those fully, partially, and not protected. Factors associated with the lack of triple vaccination were assessed by using multivariable logistic regression and classification tree analysis.
Overall, 473 men who have sex with men were considered: 146 (31%) were fully protected, 231 (48%) partially, and 96 (20%) were not. Daily-based PrEP users (fully: 93, 63.7%; partially: 107, 46.3%; and not protected: 40, 41.7%; P = 0.001) and those with a sexually transmitted infection at the first visit (43, 29.5%; 55, 23.8%; 15, 15.6%; P = 0.048) were more frequently fully protected. At multivariable analysis, the odds of lack of triple vaccination was lower among daily-based users (adjusted odds ratio = 0.47, 95% confidence interval = 0.31-0.70, P < 0.001). Classification tree analysis showed that among daily-based users, with sexually transmitted infection prior and at the first PrEP visit, there was a lower chance of lack of triple vaccination ( P = 44%).
Strategies targeting PrEP users at risk of missing HAV, HBV, and HPV vaccinations need to be implemented, focusing mostly on event-based users.

All HIV+ patients with ...HIV-associated lymphoma (Hodgkin lymphoma, HL; non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, NHL) observed between 1.2000 and 12.2013 in the ICONA Foundation Study cohort or in three collaborating centres, and, as control group, nHIV-L individuals followed in one of the four collaborating centres over the same time period, were included. Survival estimates were calculated by use of Kaplan-Meier (KM) and multivariable Cox regression models.
1,331 pts were included (465 HIV-L, 866 nHIV-L): 909 (68%) NHL, 422 (32%) HL. 3 years-cumulative probability (95% confidence interval, CI) of death was higher in HIV-L compared to nHIV-L in NHL (38% (33-44) vs. 22% (19-26); p<0.001), and HL (22% 15-29 vs. 10% (6-13), p<0.001). Among HL, HIV was associated with an increased risk of death (hazard ratio HR = 2.37 95% CI: 1.24-4.55, p = 0.009) independently of calendar year, age, gender, type of chemotherapy and stage; in NHL, HIV was no longer an independent predictor of death after controlling for rituximab use and IPI (HR = 1.26 (0.97-1.63), p = 0.08).
Our analysis shows a reduced overall survival in HIV+ patients diagnosed with lymphoma compared to HIV-negative controls. Whereas in HIV people with HL, the increased risk of death was confirmed even after adjustment for main confounders, the association between HIV status and survival in NHL appears to be somewhat attenuated after controlling for more aggressive presentation and lower frequency of rituximab use in HIV-+ people.
Background
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can induce conjunctivitis signs and symptoms. However, limited information is available on their impact on COVID-19 disease ...phenotype. Quantification of ocular signs/symptoms can provide a rapid, non-invasive proxy for predicting clinical phenotype. Moreover, the existence and entity of conjunctival viral shedding is still debated. This has relevant implications to manage disease spread.
The purpose of this study was to investigate conjunctivitis signs and symptoms and their correlation with clinical parameters, conjunctival viral shedding in patients with COVID-19.
Methods
Fifty-three patients hospitalized between February 25th and September 16th, 2020 at the San Raffaele Hospital, in Milan, Lombardy, Italy with a confirmed diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 were evaluated. Presence of interstitial pneumonia was confirmed with computed tomography scan imaging. Ocular signs and symptoms, anosmia/ageusia, clinical/laboratory parameters, and reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) from nasopharyngeal and conjunctival swabs for COVID-19 virus were analyzed.
Results
Forty-six out of 53 patients showed a positive nasopharyngeal swab for SARS-CoV-2 infection at the time of conjunctival evaluation. All the conjunctival swabs were negative. Conjunctivitis symptoms were present in 37% of patients. Physician-assessed ocular signs were detected in 28% of patients
.
Patients with ocular symptoms or signs tended to be older: 76.8 years (62.4–83.3) vs 57.2 years (48.1–74.0),
p
= 0.062 and had a longer hospitalization: 38 days (18–49) vs. 14 days (11–21),
p
= 0.005. Plasma levels of Interleukin-6 were higher in patients with signs or symptoms in comparison with those without them: 43.5 pg/ml (19.7–49.4) vs. 8 pg/ml (3.6–20.7),
p
= 0.02. Red cell distribution width was also significantly higher: 15 (14.3–16.7) vs 13.2 (12.4–14.4),
p
= 0.001.
Conclusions
We found that over a third of the patients had ocular signs or symptoms. These had higher prevalence in patients with a more severe infection. No viral shedding was detected in the conjunctiva. Our results suggest that prompt detection of conjunctivitis signs/symptoms can serve as a helpful proxy to predict COVID-19 clinical phenotype.
The dynamic of HIV-viral load (VL) remains poorly investigated in HIV/HCV patients under direct acting antivirals (DAAs).
We retrospectively evaluated HIV-VL at baseline (BL) during and up to 24 ...weeks post-DAAs in a cohort of 305 HIV-1/HCV patients, on ART and with no HIV virological failure (VF) in the 6 months before treatment with DAAs; during the period of observation VF was defined as confirmed VL≥50 copies/mL; virological blips (VB, transient, not confirmed, VL ≥50 copies/mL). Stepwise Cox regression models were fitted to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) of VF.
Fifteen VF occurred in 13 patients over 187 person-years of follow-up (PYFU): incidence rate (IR) of 8.0 per 100-PYFU (95% CI = 4.0-12.1); 29 VBs were detected in 26 patients over 184 PYFU: IR = 15.8 per 100-PYFU (95% CI = 10.0-21.5). The most prominent factor associated with VF was the presence of BL HIV residual viremia (RV = HIV-RNA detectable but not precisely quantifiable) aHR = 12.26 (95% CI = 3.74-40.17), P<0.0001. Other factors were ≥1 VBs in the 6 months before DAAs aHR = 6.95 (95% CI = 1.77-27.37) P = 0.006 number of ART regimens failed before DAAs initiation aHR (per more regimen) = 1.22 (95% CI = 1.04-1.42), P = 0.012 and age aHR (per year older) = 1.16 (95% CI = 1.04-1.29), P = 0.010.
Our findings underline the importance for close monitoring HIV-VL in selected patients. Whether this phenomenon is triggered by the rapid clearance of HCV remains to be established.
In the present study, the possibility of enhancing phenolic and flavonoid concentration in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) fruits by post-harvest irradiation with UV-B light was assessed. Fruits of ...the commercial cv Money Maker (MM) and the mutant genotype high pigment-1 (hp-1), constitutively rich in these compounds, were harvested at mature green and turning stages and left to ripen within climatic chambers where they were daily treated with UV-B radiation (1 h, 6.08 kJ/m² day). In control chambers, UV-B radiation was screened by benzophenone-treated polyethylene film. The treatment was generally effective in increasing phenolic, flavonoid and flavonol concentration in both peel and flesh of MM and hp-1 fruits, although in this latter the positive response to UV-B treatment was mainly evident in fruits harvested at mature green stage. Following UV-B treatment, antioxidant activity increased in the peel of both genotypes independently from the harvesting stage and in the flesh of hp-1 fruits harvested at mature green stage. Hydroxycinnamic acids of both genotypes reacted to UV-B treatment differently depending on harvesting stage and tissue localisation, generally showing an increase in the peel of fruits harvested at mature green stage. With few exceptions, UV-B irradiation also induced a higher accumulation of individual flavonoids both in the peel and in the flesh of MM and hp-1 fruits independently from harvesting stage. Based on these results, UV-B irradiation can be considered a promising technique to increase the nutraceutical potential of tomato fruits by non-molecular tools.

Post-hoc analysis of the APACHE trial, on adults with chronic HIV-1 infection, prolonged suppressive antiretroviral therapy and good immunological profile. HIV-1 DNA was quantified in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs); HLA-A, -B and -C were tested on genomic DNA. Crude odds ratios (OR) with their respective 95% Wald confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated by univariable logistic regression for HLAs with a p-value <0.10.
We found 78 and 18 patients with HIV-1 DNA ≥100 copies/106PBMCs and with HIV-1 DNA <100 copies/106PBMCs, respectively. HLA-A24 was present in 21 (29.6%) participants among subjects with HIV-1 DNA ≥100 copies/106PBMCs and 1 (5.9%) among those with HIV-1 DNA <100 copies/106PBMCs (OR = 5.67, 95%CI = 0.79-46.03; p = 0.105); HLA-B39 was present in 1 (1.4%) with HIV-1 DNA ≥100 copies/106PBMCs and in 3 (17.6%) with HIV-1 DNA <100 copies/106PBMCs (OR = 13.71, 95%CI = 1.33-141.77; p = 0.028) and HLA-B55 in 3 (4.2%) and 3 (17.6%), respectively (OR = 4.43, 95%CI = 0.81-24.29; p = 0.087). All the three patients with HLA-B39 and HIV-1 DNA <100 copies/106PBMCs did not have HLA-A24.
In patients with HIV-1 infection who maintained a good virological and immunological profile, HLA-B39 and -B55 may be associated with lower levels of HIV-1 DNA.
Chitosan was produced from Hermetia illucens pupal exuviae by heterogeneous and homogeneous deacetylation. Tomato fruits (Solanum lycopersicum), that are one of the most grown and consumed food ...throughout the world, were coated with 0.5 and 1% chitosan, applied by dipping or spraying, and stored at room temperature or 4 °C, for a storage period of 30 days. Statistical analysis give different results depending on the analysed parameters: heterogeneous chitosan, indeed, had a better effect than the homogenous one in maintaining more stable physico-chemical parameters, while the homogenous chitosan improved the total phenols, flavonoids and antioxidant activity. Chitosan coatings applied by spraying were more effective in all the analyses. Chitosan derived from H. illucens always performed similarly to the commercial chitosan. However, a general better performance of insect-derived chitosan on the concentration of phenolics and flavonoids, and the antioxidant activity was observed as compared to the commercial one. Chitosan coating has already been successfully used for preservation of fresh fruits, as alternative to synthetic polymers, but this is the first investigation of chitosan produced from an insect for this application. These preliminary results are encouraging regarding the validation of the insect H. illucens as a source of chitosan.
