A superconducting film with a tunable low transition temperature (Tc) is required in high-resolution Transition-Edge Sensor (TES) detectors, which have applications including dark matter detection, ...low threshold coherent elastic neutrino nucleus scattering measurement, and X-ray spectroscopy. We have been investigating a new approach to tune the Tc of superconducting thin films fabricated by co-sputtering Iridium and Platinum. The effects of Pt concentration and deposition parameters on the films' structural, electrical, and superconducting properties have been studied. AFM and XRD techniques and low temperature resistance measurements have been utilized for film characterization. By varying the Pt concentration and deposition parameters when co-sputtering, we have successfully achieved controllable tuning of Tc in the range of 30–200 mK. The experimental results demonstrate co-sputtering as a viable method for controlling the Tc of Ir-based thin films that can be applied to fabricating high-resolution TESs.
Future cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments, including the large scale ground-based Stage Four CMB Experiment (CMB-S4), satellites, and balloons, aim to map the CMB to an unprecedented ...precision in order to answer several key questions in cosmology. However, to reach the target noise sensitivity, more than 100,000 detectors will be needed. Arrays of kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) are a promising alternative for experiments that require large number of detectors due to the intrinsic multiplexing capabilities. We present the fabrication procedure for a prototype planar orthomode transducer (OMT)-coupled multi-color KID array optimized for 220/270 GHz frequency bands. These devices are made from silicon-on-insulator wafers to provide a low-loss substrate for the KIDs. The OMT couples the two polarizations of light from a wide-band feedhorn to separate Nb/SiN/Nb microstrip lines, which are then coupled to Al/Nb lumped-element KIDs (LEKIDs). The silicon on the backside of the OMT is etched away using deep reactive ion etch to release the OMT membrane to enable operation over a wide bandwidth. Finally, the buried oxide is removed underneath the KID capacitors in order to minimize two-level system noise and loss mitigation. We achieved a good yield (> 80%) on our prototype devices.
Traditionally, kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) have been thought of as non-equilibrium detectors, which detect the excess of quasiparticles from the absorbed photon. In this case, recombination ...of quasiparticles is the bottleneck that limits the quasiparticle lifetime. However, the response of a KID to an excess of quasiparticles from photon absorption gives a nearly identical response to the increase in quasiparticle density due to a temperature change. Thus, KIDs can be used as thermometers to detect the temperature rise in an absorber due to a thermalized X-ray photon. In this work, we present a working prototype of an X-ray thermal KID (i.e., TKID) using a tungsten silicide resonator with superconducting tantalum absorber on a silicon nitride membrane. Finally, we outline improvements for future designs.
Frequency-domain multiplexing is a readout technique for transition-edge sensor bolometer arrays used on modern cosmic microwave background experiments, including the SPT-3G receiver. Here, we ...present design details and performance measurements for a low-parasitic frequency-domain multiplexing readout. Reducing the parasitic impedance of the connections between cryogenic components provides a path to improve both the crosstalk and noise performance of the readout. Reduced crosstalk will in turn allow higher-multiplexing factors. We have demonstrated a factor of two improvement in parasitic resistance compared to SPT-3G hardware. Reduced parasitics also permits operation of lower-resistance bolometers optimized for improved readout noise performance. We demonstrate that a module in the prototype system has comparable readout noise performance to an SPT-3G module when operated with dark TES bolometers in the laboratory.

Abstract
SPT-3G is the third survey receiver operating on the South Pole Telescope dedicated to high-resolution observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Sensitive measurements of the ...temperature and polarization anisotropies of the CMB provide a powerful data set for constraining cosmology. Additionally, CMB surveys with arcminute-scale resolution are capable of detecting galaxy clusters, millimeter-wave bright galaxies, and a variety of transient phenomena. The SPT-3G instrument provides a significant improvement in mapping speed over its predecessors, SPT-SZ and SPTpol. The broadband optics design of the instrument achieves a 430 mm diameter image plane across observing bands of 95, 150, and 220 GHz, with 1.2′ FWHM beam response at 150 GHz. In the receiver, this image plane is populated with 2690 dual-polarization, trichroic pixels (∼16,000 detectors) read out using a 68× digital frequency-domain multiplexing readout system. of the southern sky. We summarize the unique optical, cryogenic, detector, and readout technologies employed in SPT-3G, and we report on the integrated performance of the instrument.
Although continuous highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is effective for many HIV-infected patients, it can be toxic and prohibitive in cost. By decreasing the total amount of time patients ...receive medications, intermittent HAART could reduce toxicity and cost. Therefore, we initiated a pilot study in which 10 HIV-infected individuals receiving effective therapy that resulted in levels of HIV RNA <50 copies per ml of plasma and CD4+T cell counts >300 cells per mm3of whole blood received repeated cycles of 7 days on HAART followed by 7 days off of HAART. Patients maintained suppression of plasma viremia for 32-68 weeks. There was no significant increase in HIV proviral DNA or replication-competent HIV in peripheral CD4+T cells or HIV RNA in peripheral blood or lymph node mononuclear cells. There was no significant change in CD4+T cell counts, no significant increase in CD4+or CD8+T cells expressing activation markers or producing IFN-γ in response to HIV, no increase in CD4+T cell proliferation to p24 antigen, and no evidence for the development of resistance to HAART medications. There was a significant decrease in serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Thus, in this proof-of-concept study, short-cycle intermittent HAART maintained suppression of plasma viremia as well as HIV replication in reservoir sites while preserving CD4+T cell counts. In addition, there was a decrease in serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Intermittent therapy may be an important strategy to reduce cost and toxicity for HIV-infected individuals.
Here, we present a sample-variance-limited measurement of the temperature power spectrum (TT) of the cosmic microwave background using observations of a ~1500 deg2 field made by the SPT-3G in 2018. ...We report multifrequency power spectrum measurements at 95, 150, and 220 GHz covering the angular multipole range 750 ≤ ℓ < 3000. We combine this TT measurement with the published polarization power spectrum measurements from the 2018 observing season and update their associated covariance matrix to complete the SPT-3G 2018 TT/TE/EE dataset. This is the first analysis to present cosmological constraints from SPT TT, TE, and EE power spectrum measurements jointly. We blind the cosmological results and subject the dataset to a series of consistency tests at the power spectrum and parameter level. We find excellent agreement between frequencies and spectrum types and our results are robust to the modeling of astrophysical foregrounds. We report results for Λ CDM and a series of extensions, drawing on the following parameters: the amplitude of the gravitational lensing effect on primary power spectra AL, the effective number of neutrino species Neff, the primordial helium abundance YP, and the baryon clumping factor due to primordial magnetic fields b. We find that the SPT-3G 2018 TT/TE/EE data are well fit by Λ CDM with a probability to exceed of 15%. For Λ CDM, we constrain the expansion rate today to H0 = 68.3 ± 1.5 km s–1 Mpc–1 and the combined structure growth parameter to S8 = 0.797 ± 0.042. The SPT-based results are effectively independent of Planck, and the cosmological parameter constraints from either dataset are within <1σ of each other. The addition of temperature data to the SPT-3G TE/EE power spectra improves constraints by 8–27% for each of the Λ CDM cosmological parameters. When additionally fitting AL, Neff, or Neff + YP, the posteriors of these parameters tighten by 5–24%. In the case of primordial magnetic fields, complete TT/TE/EE power spectrum measurements are necessary to break the degeneracy between b and ns, the spectral index of primordial density perturbations. We report a 95% confidence upper limit from SPT-3G data of b<1.0. The cosmological constraints in this work are the tightest from SPT primary power spectrum measurements to date and the analysis forms a new framework for future SPT analyses.
Hair cells in the inner ear provide the basis for the exquisite hearing capabilities of mammals. These cells transduce sound-induced displacements of their mechanosensitive hair bundle into ...electrical currents within a fraction of a millisecond and with nanometer fidelity. Excitatory displacements of the hair cell’s bundle tense tip links that open transducer channels. These channels are located either at one or at both ends of the links, where the latter possibility was thought to compromise sensitivity via negative cooperativity, and discarded for quantitatively describing the transduction process. Here, we show instead that this series mode of activation accurately explains measured transduction in hair cells. It enhances both sensitivity and dynamic range of hair cell transduction, by one channel that is extremely sensitive at small displacements while the other responds best to larger stimuli. Our results provide a new framework for exploring the dynamics of hair cell activation.

Here we report the first results of an astronomical transient survey with the South Pole Telescope (SPT) using the SPT-3G camera to observe 1500 deg

of the southern sky. The observations took place from 2020 March to November in three bands centered at 95, 150, and 220 GHz. This survey yielded the detection of 15 transient events from sources not previously detected by the SPT. The majority are associated with variable stars of different types, expanding the number of such detected flares by more than a factor of two. The stellar flares are unpolarized and bright, in some cases exceeding 1 Jy, and have durations from a few minutes to several hours. Another population of detected events last for 2–3 weeks and appear to be extragalactic in origin. Though data availability at other wavelengths is limited, we find evidence for concurrent optical activity for two of the stellar flares. Future data from SPT-3G and forthcoming instruments will provide real-time detection of millimeter-wave transients on timescales of minutes to months.
