Triple-GEM detectors are a well known technology in high energy physics. In order to have a complete understanding of their behavior, in parallel with on beam testing, a Monte Carlo code has to be ...developed to simulate their response to the passage of particles. The software must take into account all the physical processes involved from the primary ionization up to the signal formation, e.g. the avalanche multiplication and the effect of the diffusion on the electrons. In the case of gas detectors, existing software such as Garfield already perform a very detailed simulation but are CPU time consuming. A description of a reliable but faster simulation is presented here: it uses a parametric description of the variables of interest obtained by suitable preliminary Garfield simulations and tuned to the test beam data. It can reproduce the real values of the charge measured by the strip, needed to reconstruct the position with the Charge Centroid method. In addition, particular attention was put to the simulation of the timing information, which permits to apply also the micro-Time Projection Chamber position reconstruction, for the first time on a triple-GEM. A comparison between simulation and experimental values of some sentinel variables in different conditions of magnetic field, high voltage settings and incident angle will be shown.
Performance of triple GEM prototypes has been evaluated by means of a muon beam at the H4 line of the SPS test area at CERN. The data from two planar prototypes have been reconstructed and analyzed ...offline with two clusterization methods: the center of gravity of the charge distribution and the micro Time Projection Chamber (μTPC). GEM prototype performance evaluation, performed with the analysis of data from a TB, showed that two-dimensional cluster efficiency is above 95% for a wide range of operational settings. Concerning the spatial resolution, the charge centroid cluster reconstruction performs extremely well with no magnetic field: the resolution is well below 100 μm. Increasing the magnetic field intensity, the resolution degrades almost linearly as effect of the Lorentz force that displaces, broadens and asymmetrizes the electron avalanche. Tuning the electric fields of the GEM prototype we could achieve the unprecedented spatial resolution of 190 μm at 1 Tesla. In order to boost the spatial resolution with strong magnetic field and inclined tracks a μTPC cluster reconstruction has been investigated. Such a readout mode exploits the good time resolution of the GEM detector and electronics to reconstruct the trajectory of the particle inside the conversion gap. Beside the improvement of the spatial resolution, information on the track angle can be also extracted. The new clustering algorithm has been tested with diagonal tracks with no magnetic field showing a resolution between 100 μm and 150 μm for the incident angle ranging from 10° to 45°. Studies show similar performance with 1 Tesla magnetic field. This is the first use of a μTPC readout with a triple GEM detector in magnetic field. This study has shown that a combined readout is capable to guarantee stable performance over a broad spectrum of particle momenta and incident angles, up to a 1 Tesla magnetic field.

Musculoskeletal conditions are a major burden on individuals, health systems, and social care systems. The objective of the MAPPING study was to assess the impact of musculoskeletal conditions on ...health-related quality of life (HRQL) in an Italian population sample.
Trained rheumatologists carried out structured visits in which subjects were asked about musculoskeletal symptoms and socio-demographic characteristics, completed validated instruments for measuring HRQL, such as the Short Form 36 items status survey questionnaire (SF-36), the EUROQoL five item questionnaire (EQ-5D), and chronic pain severity (Chronic Pain Grade - CPG questionnaire), and underwent a standardized physical examination. We considered a sample size of 576 patients diagnosed as having had musculoskeletal conditions. For the purposes of this study, musculoskeletal diseases were classified into 4 diagnostic groups: inflammatory rheumatic diseases (IRD), symptomatic peripheral osteoarthritis (SPOA), low back pain (LBP), and soft tissue disorders (STD). Cases were defined by previously validated criteria.
The 4 major musculoskeletal disease groups, compared to non-sufferers, significantly impaired all eight health concepts of the SF-36 in the following order of magnitude: IRD, SPOA, STD, and LBP. Similar results were found for EQ-5D. The most striking impact was seen for SF-36 physical measures. On multiple regression modelling the physical component (PCS) of the SF-36 was influenced by female sex, age, high BMI, and low educational level (all at a p level < 0.001), and by manual occupation (p = 0.028) and chronic co-morbidity (p = 0.035) in LBP In SPOA, factors influencing physical function were age (p = 0.0001), low educational level (p = 0.006), female sex (p = 0.028), and chronic co-morbidity (p = 0.037). Moreover, an association on chronic co-morbidity and low educational level (both at a p level < 0.001), age (p = 0.004), and manual occupation (p = 0.035) was found with IRD, as well as of chronic co-morbidity and low educational level (both at a p level < 0.001), female sex (p = 0.006) and high BMI (p = 0.036) with STD were also found. Similar results were found for EQ-5D.
The MAPPING study indicates that musculoskeletal conditions have a clearly detrimental effect on the HRQL and one third of the adult population in Italy visited at least one physician for musculoskeletal problem in the past year. These results enable a comparison to be made of the burden of musculoskeletal conditions with that of other common chronic conditions.
The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of intra-articular methotrexate (MTX) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Twenty-three consecutive patients, 10 ...with RA and 13 with PsA, with prevalent or unique arthritic involvement of one knee, were treated with intra-articular injections of MTX 10 mg every 7 days for 8 weeks. Before the beginning of the treatment and after 9 and 17 weeks, the patients underwent a clinical evaluation measuring maximal knee flexion angle, visual analog scale (VAS) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). On the same days, an ultrasonographic examination of the involved knee was performed by two independent experienced operators. Synovial thickness in the suprapatellar bursa and the presence of joint effusion and Baker's cyst were assessed. An increase of the mean value of maximal knee flexion angle and a reduction of the mean values of ESR and VAS between T0, T9 and T17 were demonstrated. Ultrasonographic evaluation showed significant reduction of synovial thickness and joint effusion. No differences were detected for the presence of Baker's cyst. We may conclude that repeated intra-articular injections of MTX resulted in a decrease of local as well as systemic inflammatory signs. As far as we know, this is the first study that explores the effects of intra-articular MTX in RA and PsA both clinically and by ultrasonography.
Acase of diffuse scleroderma in a 56-year-old woman who received paclitaxel for the treatment of a metastatic ovarian cancer is presented. The clinical cutaneous alterations, as well as the ...capillaroscopic and histological findings, were indistinguishable from those encountered in definite systemic sclerosis (SSc). In contrast to SSc, Raynaud's phenomenon and cutaneous calcinosis were absent and antinuclear antibodies were negative. The temporal relationship between the onset of skin involvement and administration of the drug may indicate an effect of paclitaxel.
The chromosomes of Echiichthys vipera (Trachinidae) and Uranoscopus scaber (Uranoscopidae) were analyzed by means of various banding methods and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with ...telomeric and major rDNA probes, respectively. The karyotype of E. vipera was composed of 48 acrocentric chromosomes and NOR sites, as revealed by all detection methods, were situated pericentromerically on a single pair of middle-sized chromosomes. Blocks of constitutive heterochromatin were present in the pericentromeric regions of all pairs of chromosomes. The karyotype of U. scaber showed three karyomorphs: 2n = 30 (18 m + 12 a/st m = metacentric, a = acrocentric and st = subtelocentric), 2n = 28 (20 m + 8 a/st), 2n = 27 (21 m + 6 a/st). NORs, as revealed by FISH, were situated pericentromerically on a single pair of middle-sized chromosomes in spite of Ag-positive signals in the centromeres of all pairs of chromosomes. Robertsonian fusions were hypothesized for observed variation due to invariable number of chromosome arms FN = 48.
GASTONE64 (Gem Amplifier Shaper Tracking ON Events) is a novel 64-channel mixed analog-digital ASIC developed to readout the cylindrical GEM inner tracking detector of the KLOE-2 apparatus at the ...e+e-DA Phi NEDA Phi NE collider. It has been designed in the CMOS 0.35 mu m technology and each analog channel is made of preamplifier, shaper and discriminator. The expected input charge ranges between few fC up to 40 fC, the charge sensitivity is 16 mV/fC while the equivalent input noise charge (ENC) is 800 e-+40 e-/pF. The discriminated signals are read-out using a 100 MBit/s LVDS serial data link. The power consumption is about 6 mW/channel.
